- There were scenes of jubilation outside St Mary's Hospital in London on Monday evening (July 22) as news broke among well-wishers that Prince William's wife Kate had given birth to a baby boy. The baby was born at St Mary's with William at Kate's side at 4:24 p.m. (1524 GMT) and weighted 8lbs 6oz (3.8 kg).

Meritocracy just means gaining power and wealth through merit. In a democracy people decide who has most merit to represent them, in the free market, people with the best knowledge of the market gain the most wealth. Neither are perfect, and neither are a true meritocracy, as true meritocracy would be difficult to even define and probably impossible to accomplish. But even the current system, that tries to be meritocratic, is sure better than royalty. How many mad kings and queens did UK have?
