Loved the openness in this moment 👏👏 Tommy Flanagan talks about how his near death experience allowed him to understand that fear was okay, where growing up fear was taboo and looked down on by his peers.

Tommy Flanagan (Sons of Anarchy, Power Book IV) joins us this week and opens up on how his near death experience after a knife fight led to him not only changing career paths from being a DJ to acting, but also allowed him to realize that it’s okay to fear things in life. Tommy talks about drawing from experiences and interactions in his past to inspire his ‘tough guy’ bravado that he portrays with a lot of the roles he has. We also talk about his underprepared experiences on Braveheart and Gladiator, how he was able to overcome imposter syndrome in this insecure business, and his time shooting Power Book IV: Force.

Crazy story! Tommy Flanagan and his knife fight near death experience #insideofyou #fight
Small parts but his first 4 movies are Braveheart, Faceoff, The Game and Gladiator. Wow
Sure, if you forget The Saint, Plunkett and Macleane and The Ratcatcher. All came before Gladiator.
@@colinbooth531 Did you mean the Pale Saint? Also how cld you not add Boondock Saints 😢 /j
@@SaintShion lol he wasn't in boondock saints you're thinking of billy Conerly
I loved this guy as chibs in sons of anarchy its one of my all time favourite shows.
Got to meet him at a comic con once. He was a very kind person. They were charging $85 for a picture with him, and when I said that I could not afford that because I was a single mom working at Pizza hut, he immediately stood up, walked over to me, and allowed me to take a picture with my cell phone for free. If I could, I would post the picture.
Truly amazing person ❤
The British Army used to send new army surgeons to Glasgow hospitals to train them for battlefields because they had so many stabbing and slashings. So may people getting chibbed up.
That’s both hilarious and tragic to hear.
Aye been up the Victoria hospital in Glasgow a few times, getting stitched up.. Its no fun shall I say
Chibbed. Got that one 😜
They do the same in the US military, every SF medic has to do a year at one of the 3 hospitals in the US with the highest gun violence victims
Aye I’ve been through it myself
He's a fooking inspiration. I personally have huge scars on my arm when i was "done" as he says, then got into acting, while ive never had his success, he definitely gave me the inspiration to keep going with what you love.
He’s the man
@@jeffcordova9633 Definitely! i admire the man greatly not just for his acting ability, but for his resilience. I get embarrassed by my own scars along my arm, (from serious elf harm) fully permanent. Unfortunately i don't have a cool story like tommy...so to speak. However he looks and sounds the part, and got his break, despite everything. I wish for my confidence and break to happen too. We should make physical deformities be embraced on the big screen.
God, I love Flanagan! So glad he made it through this!
This man holds the title of the only actually tough actor in Hollywood. Goddamn!
Jason Statham has entered the chat lol
@@llq4ever309Russell Crowe comes to mind too
Sean bean
You should read up on Clint Eastwood and Christopher Lee
I've been both shot and stabbed in my life (not at the same time) and stabbing definitely hurts more than you expect. Maybe because the blade is actually bigger than a bullet but you feel it for days.
Always thought stabbing must be more painful given its slower and the knife must do more damage on its way out aswell
just days?
doubt it.
I’ve been shot in the head& my mate stabbed me up the nose with a pen knife,I’d rather have been shot….again
More nerve damage. Horrible.
He describes being stabbed to death so....Scottishly.....
Doesn't he just 😂
Aaawwh mooooonn aahmmm fucckin leeakin moonnnn
@@shawnthompson2303that’s not close to how it sounded
love this guy.. in my all time favorite movies, braveheart, gladiator .. others i dont recall
SoA
I’m in love with his accent 🥰
Remember at one point Glasgow had the highest murder rate in the whole of Western Europe. Never mind the U.K. it had the most brutal, highest rate of stabbings in Europe. Yes Glasgow could be a brutal place too live..
Damn would’ve never guessed or probably known that. Been stabbed once clipped the top of the right lung 2 surgeries later safe to say I’ve felt enough steel inside my chest for a life time lol always thought to myself I’d probably rather get shot than stabbed again but it’s even a hell of a thing to contemplate smh
You seem proud.
Glasgow Smiles better yeah?
I love this guy
Aww 🥰 thanks for your love and support how are you doing?
Sons of anarchy apparently had a crazy cast
He remembered the pain of the knife going in. note to podcaster, at this point you could have said, "inside of you™" and then looked at the camera and begin the music for the show
He was hilarious in All About The Benjamins 🤣😂
Dude- I never imagined that some of those knife scars on Tommy were for real. That is so bad ass!
I just watched Braveheart. Had no idea he was in this until rewatching. Fantastic.
Hence the reason he got the nickname chibs in s/o/a in Glasgow its slag for stabing. A we phase is normally used.... "heer mate ......yur getn chib'd". Give it your best shot in a Scottish accent. Much love to ya tommy boy 🏴
Usually means slashed more than stabbed, it's also slang for a weapon usually a knife or bottle' if you have something blunt like a bat it's called a cosh. Glasgow gets a bad name for violence and there is some right shiteholes same as any other city but I wouldnt want to stay anywhere else in Scotland. Like the saying says " People make Glasgow " you can have a laugh with people here and let's face it where else in the world can you rely on members of the public to kick the living shit out of suicide bombers who are on fire trying to set off a bomb in a crowded airport 🤣🤣🤣
Or a” who’ve gave him a Mars Bar” aka a scar.
@@matty6848 aye bud exactly
@@matty6848that's more cockney rhyming slang
Scotsman can be crazy as hell. I was working in Scotland back in 1998 and thre was kk weekend without a fight in a bar. We used to go with boys foe a few pints and ended up fighting sometimes. Once I ended up in hispital with some guy , we fought and gave each other other some scars I carry till today. Well, we shaked hands and had a pint later. I had to meet management same week, but was canceled, my face )))
BIG FAN OF TOMMY FLANAGAN-! Would love to work with him on something ... as he and his characters are river of life's ups and downs and ultimately, a bit of the wisdom we are lucky enough to earn.

A great actor indeed, should be given more lead roles that's for sure.
Amazing actor
Loved him in Gladiator
I've been stabbed 6 sliced 2 ( I know). People think it's like John Wick, someone stabs you, and you're up dancing around a minute later? When you get stabbed, you ain't doing shit 💯
I, thankfully, haven’t been through that but I’ve witnessed it happening a few times and it’s absolutely terrifying! I just about kept the two alive for the ambulance to take over for me. I live in Northern Ireland and a place I lived in was crazy. Unfortunately, my 12 year old twins at the time witnessed “adults” get off their heads and slice themselves up. One in particular took a blade to his own throat.
@BernieMcquillan yeah crazy stuff. People don't realise the damage a knife does
absolute living legend
I also have a Chelsea smile.. weirdly it was inflicted by the same situation.. I have ptsd to this day from it..
I would consider myself a friendly guy.. the two worst parts about it.. is not that you see it everyday.. but if you speak about it.. if feels like they win and 9/10 people judge you before you ever say a word
You gotta own it man. It's the only way you can win
Its a Glasgow smile, you Chelsea lot can't re-name it and make it yours.
I reckon it's pretty badass man, like the other person said you gotta own it
My favorite SoA actor. We could also use a friend like Chibs.
If that guy had heard this story he never would have blessed the marriage by enforcing prima nocta...
That never even happened in France where Mel Gibson and Co picked up the myth while researching the English Kings French origin.
Live and be grateful! Never know when you're number will call!
i remember him most fro All About The Benjarmans
Glasgow is where they started a 5years mandatory sentence if you were carrying. It did work.
For carrying a knife?😂
@@onaolapolawal4952 Yes. Look it up.
You don't get five years for a blade
@@ape_zeroit’s more lax now but it was brought in to cut down on the “young teams”
@@duckydae it's never been 5 years for a knife. 5 years for a gun or ammunition is mandatory.
He is great actor and human beig.
And we all went to the same school . Tommy , his brother Andy and Paul Riley ( Winston in still game ) . Add the mental gangster families that would take 2 minutes to Google and you'll have a feel for the place. Mental days .
my auntie was in his year at school in easterhouse, really is a small bloody world when it comes to glasgow.
half the celebs from the east end all went to the same schools. 😂
But Tommy's brother wasn't "done" after all? I'd like to know.
he is alive and well
Hell after he stood up for his bro, they probably didn’t want to have anything to do with his family!
When he’s like you survived.?
Yeah lmfao
My mum knew this guy
Let's be honest those scras look great on him. Make him look real tough. I'm sure he is anyway but it totally add something extra.
Anyone know what Tommy's sunglasses are called? Style not brand, doubt I'm affording his
Ray Ban
Or Wayfarer
@@admiralboom481 Yup, Ray Ban Wayfarer.
Yeah i copped it in ‘rooftops’ (old shithole nightclub in sauchihall st.) with a bottle over the head that tore my nose open. Learning experience! 😂
You interrupt your guests too much, just saying.
Wow
Glesga was no joke .If yer fae the schemes you know . Shout out to those who not only survive but thrive .
Damn
When glassin’ is a verb… ☹️
I was today years old finding out that buck 50 was real, I thought it was just for the All About The Benjamin's film to make his character seem even more badass
Cops have a saying about knife fights. The loser dies at the scene, the winner dies later at the hospital.
NOTE: This is why the new scream movie was so bad. 2/4 "core four" got stabbed. Bad. The dude got stabbed like thirty times. His sister got it in the gut with a twist but was up and running around fifteen minutes later.
Holy hell I've always loved scream, even liked 5 (though it could have just been because I really wanted to love it) but 6 was just fucking awful
"You survived". Hahahahahahahaha
It'll be awesome if they did a SOA movie picking up as chibbs as president.
They do watch the Mayans spin off
Why do we never find out how his brother was or if they caught the people who did it?
his brother lived and chances are tommy knew who done it, but nobody likes a grass and those folk are probably still living.
This should have subtitles.
He's speaking English you fool
Ah yesss..i too have a few mars bars on mi ol chekka..
Mare lines than rail track !
Chibbs 🕶️🤙🏆
Did they ever catch the guys who did this?
Glaswegian knife crime was slashed by treating it as a disease of poverty.
Not as crime and punishment
Progressive countries have less violence than rightwing countries!
I still wonder what it says about me that as a kid I had the biggest crush on him 😂
You like your men with scars? I've about 150 or so haha
Interviewer needs to shut up a bit more at times
He's absolutely awful.
Respect Lex Luthor please
@@dejiburner4973
Lex Luthor is gay
Man I always tell people. Ain’t no accent on planet earth like a good Scottish accent
and then SAMCRO
why cant they move on from smallville?
I don’t remember them talking much about Smallville in this episode.
Just an average night in Glasgae 🤣
It sounds like there was a debt involved either with Tommy or his brother. Either way, Tommy paid for it.
Both brothers paid for it dearly...
I barely understood any it...
All about the Benjamins yall
Jesus.
