  • Now that the fertilizing and disking are done, in this video we'll look at the rest of my oats planting process. This consists of spreading the oats seed, as well as underseeding with clover and timothy, and then harrowing to get the seed covered.

    Glad to be able to watch more of your operation Charlie, always informative and enjoyable. Back in the day when I helped seed oats we had a end gate seeder which worked much like yours, you just needed someone in the wagon shoveling oats. Thanks once again for bringing us along.

    Looks like your friends tractor needs some throttle adjusting. It has the classic bungee cord lock 🤣 Good to see you got some stuff planted!

    • @pagrainfarmer
      @pagrainfarmer  2 роки тому +1

      My friend tried to adjust the throttle before he brought it out and dropped it off, but it wouldn't adjust any more without some new parts. So, of course, I did the most red neck thing I could think of to fix it, which was using a bungee cord. Hope to get some corn planted in the coming week. We're supposed to have some nice weather.

      Yeah, the throttle wants to back off and i need full throttle to throw the seed properly, so I did the red neck fix with the bungee cord on the throttle lever. Worked fine.

    Glad to see you got your oats in the ground. I got mine planted Saturday, and had grand plans to disc with Herman and plant with an 88. Then we kept getting these off and on shot of rain, and I chickened out. 4-225 on the disc and the American on the drill, cabs the whole way and I didn't even take the time to record it.

      Yeah, it was a week ago today and tomorrow that I planted that oats. When I finished on Saturday, I was able to finish my disking for corn and soybeans. We got a lot of rain earlier this week, nice yesterday, lots of rain today and tomorrow - then nice for a week, so I hope to start planting corn this coming week.

      Thanks Cousin Scott! It's been a pretty good harrow. About 5 years ago, the same used equipment dealer where I bought it had another one just like it. I was gonna buy it (because these days they're hard to find in good condition) but it was already sold. Thanks, as always, for watching.

    Well that was interesting seeing your method I have to mitt I have never seen that before but as long as the seed gets in the ground that’s what really counts and I’m sure we’re gonna have some great crop updates throughout This year I appreciate all your hard work

    We have the exact same drag harrow. I’ve pulled it with something as small as a Farmall C all the way up to a JD 4020. If it’s set all the way into the ground it’ll make a good 4020 grunt. Makes a nice smooth seedbed for sure.

      I've never found that seed depth for oats was as critical as it is for something like corn or soybeans. I've done it this way for probably 25 years and never had a problem. Thanks for watching and commenting, my friend.

      I have 2 old Oliver Superior drills, but both have the same problem - the tubes that everything runs through have rusted away and they no longer sell them. These cone spreaders are a lot cheaper than a drill and I can do it quicker this way, too. Thanks for watching and commenting.

      @@pagrainfarmer any drill I can afford has that problem, among other rust issues. My grandpa and I had our own machinery, but it was split. He had a drill and corn planter, I owned the corn picker, etc. Neither of us at the end could operate alone. Taking time for me to build up. Good luck to you this season. Thought you had a cultimulcher? We always ran ours after when we seeded that way, teeth just scratching the surface to work in the seed, packer wheels leveled up everything super nice and pushed the rocks down. If we used our drill, had a hitch on the rear and pulled a packer behind it.

    Well done Mr Charlie!! I really enjoyed the rides and learning more about your operation my friend!! Nothing wrong with that harrow, looked at several myself!!! Now the broadcast seeder, is that a factory wheel thing in there, or is this something that you added? I apologize for my ignorance or if you have said before, but that was really cool! I love the tradition you are continuing with the mixing tub, that is awesome!! Thank you sir for bringing us along, look fwd to ALOT more as the season goes!! 😁👍

    • @pagrainfarmer
      @pagrainfarmer  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, I'm big on tradition, and when I can carry something on that my dad and/or grandfather did, I do it. It's my way of honoring them. And never apologize to me about asking questions. Remember this - I was a high school teacher in my off-the-farm job - so I heard lots. Questions are how we learn - and when I heard questions from my students, I knew they were paying attention, interested, and trying to learn. To me, the real shame, is when people have questions and do not ask. A missed opportunity for sure. Believe me, I still ask lots of questions when in the presence of someone who knows more than I do on something I'm dealing with. Better to ask than to learn the hard way - can save time, effort, and money. Anyway, that wheel thing inside the seeder is a factory piece. I suppose it was designed to keep fertilizer/seed/etc., from bridging, but I like it with clover/timothy seed because it keeps the 2 mixed. I appreciate you supporting my channel the way you do and always commenting. Means a lot, my friend.

    Thanks for another video look forward to seeing the Oliver tractors at work. I have a question about the harrow when I was a kid the harrow that Dad had on the farm it didn't have the springs like yours. The harrow had metal teeth would that be an older version than the one that you currently have that you're aware of?
    Thanks Michael

    • @pagrainfarmer
      @pagrainfarmer  2 роки тому

      My harrow is referred to as a spring-tooth harrow, where I think the one you are referring to is called a "spike tooth" harrow. The spring tooth digs, lifts and loosens the soil, while a spike tooth breaks clods, combs and makes a smoother surface and seed bed. Some people say the spring tooth harrow breaks up the soil better due to the vibratory action of the teeth. I have heard of some machines that combine both types of teeth. I guess it's all in what you want, but in my life as a farmer, I've seen many more spring tooth than spike tooth harrows in our area.
