The first claim is incorrect. Record of the Lodoss War was an RPG campaign that was adapted into an animated show. Does not diminish what the animators are doing. Just giving props to one of the grand daddies of TTRPG adaptations.
"If you like being drunk on Critical Role, then I think you'll like what this series of bartenders has done to it" Just let me in the bar man, let's go
I don't think it's gonna be in the animated series, they're doing earlier story arcs. Maybe if they make extra episodes afterwards (which I hope so), but not what they're doing so far...
@@tobistein6639 Actually, Amazon has already ordered two seasons. So we get the Briarwood arch and probably the beginning of the Chroma Conclave, if we're lucky and it goes well we might get the entire first campaign, as long as it brings in views Amazon would make more.. And if they don't.. Bring it on with another kickstarter, we can make it happen.
@@ChevaliersEmeraude I would expect them to put stuff like that - stupid mishaps that are resolved almost instantly - in a separate episode or something that's just a "stupid shit compilation" if anything. "We are gods" as well as the door in Whiterun or Grog's legendary visit to the poophouse (Cravenedge conversation, if you want to look it up) don't really fit in the context of an animated series and take too much time to get to the point. It's fun stuff that happens in a DnD stream, because that's just nerdy fun and goofing around included, but an animated series I would expect to be way more to the point and cut.
It is important to note that due to the fact that this is a different format of storytelling that things WILL be different from the original streams. It's a necessity as they will need to cut a lot of stuff out and refine it to be both a unique experience and a familiar one. I wouldn't want it to be one-to-one as the story can be adapted and changed so it can focus on the narrative it's telling. I can't wait to see what's in store and I hope that people don't complain saying, "It didn't happen that way" or "This isn't how I pictured it." At the end of the day, they're building something amazing and it took our help to get them this far. I have no doubt it will be great and I wish the best for the cast and crew!
its obvious that it can't be one-to-one, its impossible to replicate 39480298 hours of streams into a 13 episode show. but I'm a bit afraid because they made it sound like they are changing the story to make it new and surprising, and I don't want that, I just want an adaptation.
That's adaptation for you peeps. Whoever adapts a work will put their own spin on it, and it could be great or it could be horrible, but seeing that the cast of CR were working closely with the studio, I think the VM story is perfectly safe. I'm sure the "that's not what happened" moments will be totally overshadowed by the drama unfolding on screen. Think of it as a live performance after being refined by the same people who played the roles. It's going to be great.
@@B3RyL I'm not talking about the first episodes, I'm talking about the Briarwood arc adaptation. either way, "that's not what happened" moments don't bother me as much, my only concern is changing the story itself, not exactly how they connect point to point. because as any D&D game, there will always be some stupid things that happen that wouldn't translate very well. what bothers me is that they will make Delilah Briarwood actually be Raishan and she is trying to create a mechanical dragon under whitestone... obviously not that, but do you get my point ?
People say that growing up means losing that childlike feeling of wonder. After watching this, I couldn't agree with that statement less. I was nearly in tears watching this video. I'm so full of joy, excitement, wonder, and just straight-up hype. Thank you Critical Role, thank you Titmouse Studios, thank you Amazon, thank you to the incredibly talented crew working on this, and thank you Critters. Without all of you right beside me, this never could've happened.
I think the best thing they did with the series was adapting the abstract parts into visual media with meaning. Percy's flashbacks and Pike's religious visions are not spelled out in the campaign because they can describe, imagine, and allude to- or even just state conclusions from internal character processes. In the series those things become powerful sequences that help tell the story.
@Cole The moldier I believe the first season or at least the pilot will be a different pre stream story, but now with amazon prime they will have many seasons to explore all of the content of the streams
@Cole The moldier The first set of episodes will be a new story, yes, but the second 'season' will be on the Briarwood arc, which is when that moment happened.
I mean, I hope Mary is voicing Zahra. Her first appearance is a few episodes before the Briarwood arc, so I'm hoping she shows up in the animated series too.
@@Ranga3595 well, considering where Zahra was first met in vasselheim after VM delivered the horn of Orcus, she might not be shown. The animated show has no Kraghammer arc, it is an original story whch then flows into the Briarwood arc. Unless they transplant her somewhere into the new story, zahra has no place to be there. So mary might be lending her voice for someone else.
This is a pretty big-budget production. Considering Mary is one of the best voice directors around, and all the cast praises her as one of their favorites, It wouldn't be hard to imagine they might want her on board for the series in that capacity as well as for her acting. As a director/actor, Sam might not want to worry about having to direct himself while voicing Scanlan. And Steve Boom and do anything he wants in a recording booth. That dude would be a Top 5 first round draft lottery pic for any voiceover production.
0:00 i mean... Record of Lodoss War anyone? Still, i would say Vox Machina has the chance of becoming what Lodoss was for D&D in Japan in those years, it has all the lore, characters and story to be a hit and hopefully it brings even more people into the world
Yoooo! That writers room is nuts! Marc Bernardin, Fatman on Meatman? My hype needs structure that can only be given by a release date. Would love to see some of these people as guest players in the campaign.
The only show that went from d&d tabletop was a Japanese anime called record of lodoss war, had it not been for that I'd never have discovered critical role, so I am grateful for that This animated series is probably one of my new favorites
I can't wait to see the final result. That video got me even more hyped than before. And I don't know for you but I think the people in this video would make great guests for a new season of Between the Sheets.
Lmao the drawing board: Vax - girl? Vex- boy? Also, god damn seeing the "only on Amazon Prime" at the end gives me happy tears for how far they've come even though they had this potential after the very first stream.
The note beside Grog and Scanlan is something along the line of ‘all you need!’, Keyleth’s name is struck out so it looks like she didn’t make the cut and the column to the right is just Scanlan over and over... I fear the power may have gone to Sam’s head.
If only someone introduced me to DnD earlier, I would've found out about Vox Machina and Mighty Nein and have this family of great people get me through the worst years of my life. But then again, I found them during the pandemic and it's more than enough to keep me sane. I love you guys so much! Thank you for being amazing nerds
If they do one of these for the Mighty Nein show, they should call it "The Mighty [ _ ] of The Mighty Nein", and fill in the blank with story, characters, etc.
The most exciting thing for me is the fact that this is D&D. I love animated shows so to see dungeons and dragons come to life with an amazing campaign is literally a dream come true. And with how hard the Kickstarter was annihilated I think a lot of others agree. Best of absolutely luck with the release and development!!! Everyone deserves absolute success!
@sanddry I can't agree with you anymore, the majority of D&D-esq content, before critical role, was sparse or poorly done. Never felt more at home and accepted than in the critter community.
Brandon Johnson The closest thing to a great D&D show I know of is Demonac’s “Tales from my D&D campaign” (TDDC) that covers a 3.5 with animation and such. It’s amazing but the only one I’ve seen.
guess what they wanted to say is, that never really tried to create it from an actually played campaign, there a dime a dozen animated series, based on rpg games, but those are rather based on the setting and rules but not derived from an actual gameplay ;)
@@NonRegnumDei1934 Record of Lodoss War anime was based on the novels, though. The novels were adaptations of the game's transcripts but the anime/manga/other media weren't based on those transcripts, they were based on the novels. So if someone had created a book series of the VM game itself before turning it into an animated series, then we'd have a comparison. Or if it were the comics being animated.
I'm really happy to see Marc Bernardin in this mix, I first heard about that dude through Kevin Smith, and they have their own YT/Podcast show they run together - Marc is a pretty freakn talented writer in his own right and legit funny.
That's confusing me, because it clearly says Vax (Liam's) -girl? And Vex (Laura's) - boy? So unless they're planning one of those jokes where people get confused, that's actually wrong haha
Very cool, one caveat about the opening is that this is definitely not the first time a tabletop campaign has been adapted into an animated series though. Check out Record of Lodoss War for a classic example. Super high fantasy serious campaign turned into a series of light novels which was then turned into an anime. A more recent example is Goblin Slayer which is basically if Tucker's Kobolds were its own campaign, except they're goblins instead of kobolds. This one's so rooted in archetypal D&D that its characters are referred to by their class names rather than having actual ones.
God I love this show... I love these people... thank you Matt, Marisha, Travis, Liam, Laura, Sam, Talisan, Ashley and all the amazing people who have put so so so much into this, and also for inspiring thousands (including myself) of new D&D players... I guess that's how you wanted to do this!!!! X

Does not diminish what the animators are doing. Just giving props to one of the grand daddies of TTRPG adaptations.

Have you ever had some jello and then dropped it on the floor?? Thats the noise i pictured in that scene.
I don't think it's gonna be in the animated series, they're doing earlier story arcs. Maybe if they make extra episodes afterwards (which I hope so), but not what they're doing so far...
@@ChevaliersEmeraude I think that depends on Amazon, and if the first season gets as much attention and revenue as they're hoping it will.
Well the first couple of episodes ARE a totally new story, aren’t they? And then they will move on to the Briarwoods arc?
So, not canon then. More of a parallel dimension of how it could have gone mostly the same, but slightly different.

I'm liking what they're doing with the critical role theme, too. The ending of this video really built on it
Knowing that Ashly Burch is also working on this makes me even more excited and hyped omgggg
Maybe she won’t kill another player this time 🙃
People say that growing up means losing that childlike feeling of wonder.
Was i the only one who read Brandon Auman as "Random Human" ?
Anyways HYPE!
Yes
You where not... I may have also done so.
No... but now that you have said it, I can't unsee it.

I want to see the moment when sam turned into a tricerotops. That got me hooked to the stream
That encounter was genius! One of my favorites
I just watched that episode (watching the whole series for the first time) and it was so kick ass! I can't wait to see it come to life!
@Cole The moldier I believe the first season or at least the pilot will be a different pre stream story, but now with amazon prime they will have many seasons to explore all of the content of the streams
I thought that they are going to complete the Briarwood Arc as part of the stretch goals
@Cole The moldier The first set of episodes will be a new story, yes, but the second 'season' will be on the Briarwood arc, which is when that moment happened.
7:35 Steve Bloom and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn at live reading as maybe Delilah and Sylas Briarwood?
I mean, I hope Mary is voicing Zahra. Her first appearance is a few episodes before the Briarwood arc, so I'm hoping she shows up in the animated series too.
Mary most likely will be voicing her character from CR
@@Ranga3595 well, considering where Zahra was first met in vasselheim after VM delivered the horn of Orcus, she might not be shown. The animated show has no Kraghammer arc, it is an original story whch then flows into the Briarwood arc. Unless they transplant her somewhere into the new story, zahra has no place to be there.
So mary might be lending her voice for someone else.
@@KimKimeraKimes true
This is a pretty big-budget production. Considering Mary is one of the best voice directors around, and all the cast praises her as one of their favorites, It wouldn't be hard to imagine they might want her on board for the series in that capacity as well as for her acting. As a director/actor, Sam might not want to worry about having to direct himself while voicing Scanlan. And Steve Boom and do anything he wants in a recording booth. That dude would be a Top 5 first round draft lottery pic for any voiceover production.
"It's like getting your favorite drink at a bar, made by a bartender you don't know."

I can't wait for this series to be a gateway drug to get even more of my friends and family hooked on it xD
And its d&d canon :)

They are getting actual behind the scENES I'M SO PROUD OF THEM
"No one has tried to create an animated series based on a roleplaying game before"
Record of Lodoss War: Am I a joke to you?
guess what they wanted to say is, that never really tried to create it from an actually played campaign, there a dime a dozen animated series, based on rpg games, but those are rather based on the setting and rules but not derived from an actual gameplay ;)
@@grave2501 Record of Lodoss War was adapted from the author's actual game he was running with friends.

Man, I can't wait!
The Kickstarter updates mention a May 1st release date, but that may just be for the backers.
I’m going to cry, Critical Role has and is helping me through so much and it’s so great to see them succeeding
