As a member of the scg for over 40 years now, I watched the birth of ODI’s as a young teenager. All respect to my countrymen, Thommo, Lillee, one stump Terry. But my own rep cricket life was inspired by the awe I was under at the Windies team. Andy Roberts and Michael Holding so fast, my all time fave Ambrose and his perfect action (which I copied and got so much improvement from), Marshall so intimidating, Courtney so reliable. But it was Big bird that scared me. What an imposing sight he was, yet his action was smooth and elegant. That ball being let go from well over 3 metres high. And they were all gentlemen. Glory days of cricket that’s for sure.
I never got to see Andy Roberts, have been watching footage though. I remember the late Malcolm Marshall could strike at anytime, you could have your eye in, score over 50 and he'll still find a way.

There was a time, when West Indies Cricket team was known in the world, for its lethal fast bowling attack with fearsome fast bowlers like Michael Holding(referred as "the whispering death"), Andy Roberts, Joel Garner, Colin Croft, Sylvester Clarke, Malcolm Marshall, Pattrick Patterson, Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose. The mere sight of these pacers gave shivers down the spine of the batsmen. As per the legendary West Indian wicket keeper Jeff Dujon, Patrick Patterson was the fastest of the lot.
Joel was never underrated. In fact, he was highly regarded as the great Andy Roberts, with Holding & Marshall not far behind him. Joel usually bowled 5 overs straight up & then the remaining 5 overs at the death in the 40th-50th overs. He was awesome, awkward to play, bounce & at his retirement, he had the best Economy Rate in ODI cricket history. Brilliant bowler who would make any all-time ODI XI.
