Bluebell would be a good name. It is in reference to the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical engineers, which is the corps that covers all the trades within Army.
That Model F truck was assembled in Australia. Also the 351 Cleveland was fitted factory. The earlier models came with a 302 Cleveland as well and apart from the first year or so it was the US based 6 cylinder then it was changed the 4.1 Aussie 6 and later you could get the crossflow 4.1. And By the way they are not XD falcon door handles. I have worked on these things for years. Just pointing out a few things that you might have wanted to know. I Love this style of video. All I will say is have the swear jar nearby.
lot of things on this car will be a 'first time' for me. king pins one of them. watched a few youtube videos... not looking forward to it haha. re: XD door handles, yes we were just being sarcastic with how terrible the door handles were like the infamous xd-xf junk ones. so bad they use to keep them on the shelf in all local auto stores!
@@BackyardMechanics . Yeah regarding those door handles. Back in the we used to drill out the shitty pot metal rivet and replace with a bolt and nyloc nut. I have probably replaced over 500 of them back in day heaps of police cars and taxis. The handles weren'tthe greatest. It the was worn rylon door hinge bushes that kept the door out of alignment. It made people put heaps more effort to open a unadjusted door. .
Cousin Effie ! You're comments on our "Governments" road rules and how crap they are had me in stitches, so true. 3.5L Ford EcoBoost motor and matching trans is my 2c worth. Cheers.
I have a 78 F350 with a 351 Windsor(not stock.... the truck was originally equipped wth a 400)..... 4speed NP 435 and 4.10 gears same deal... 3000+ RPM at highway speed
yep, this has 4.56 dana 70, new process 435. needs something in the mid 3's range like 3.54 to return some decent economy with the 351C in it. will keep the 4.56 for something else... later...
I know an old lad with a similar colour/vintage f truck. Has an acco or international truck motor in it. He needed aircon in it so he put it a/c out of a kia in it, somehow made it all work. Hes a bit of a wizard with making stuff work. His name is robbo, seems like a suitable name for this old jalopy!
Mechanical Misadventures interesting. It’s something I haven’t even looked at yet, to see if it even has a heater or fan system at all, let alone the a/c part. Agree, getting something from the wreckers from another model will be the way to go.
Beg to differ on Windsors vs Clevelands, Windsors are small blocks and Clevelands are big blocks. There are 351 Michigans as well which are also big blocks. That is how it is here in North America anyways. Those look like split rims on it as well at 8:54 which have been outlawed here for years for good reason. Your tire shop will likely make you change them out. Otherwise great to see an old survivor about, right hand drive to boot ! Would call er Ol' blue...
I remember with my old ute, i started on petrol and swapped to gas after a few mins, that was in Darwin. Wouldnt start for shit on gas. Great project. Interested to see where you take it. Barra on gas would be interesting, tuned for towing with a monster tourque curve?
Would you guys be interested in a complete 3" dropped double i beam set up, comes with hubs/discs/calipers? it was removed from an f350 extended cab limo.
would be mad with a powerstroke and a 6 speed behind it :D the ol 351 at 3krpm on the freeways just gonna chew the fuel even on gas lol actually saw a 78 f350 crew cab with a powerstroke swap a coupla days ago, sounded mint for a diesel :D
These books have no idea about hess truck, sall of victoria had them as tow trucks and i used to drive them, 351, top loader and 9" total and utter beasts they were, these days your lucky even to find one, some of my friends have the F350 with the full house rear cover etc. and they are the best of them? They making out like they have found a XY GT HO, LOL :)
Camhin1 yeah plenty of them. These F350’s were work horses back in the 70’s. Plenty of 150/250/350 tow trucks around as well. Even a lot of the old ambulance fleet were F series !
@@BackyardMechanics I've had a 77 F-100 and a 78 F-150. 77 was round, 78 was square. Both were big block, both drained the oil directly onto the frame. The 70's was not peak automotive engineering... Enjoy the new tow pig!
refresh/later model motor and it keep it on gas (is lpg still cheap?) my ol man used to run his truck, basically a tow rig (diamond T on a C30 chev chassis) with a 454bbc on lpg and a t400 but 100% it needs some 16 or 17 inch alcoa's

after we've been wearing a 3 layer race suit and under suit protective pants and shirt as well all day in the race car, dont really feel like driving home another 2+ hours in a sweatbox! 100% will need a decent a/c and heater setup. just need to work out if i retro fit something from another car, or just get a universal street rod type system
project fuked up buying this truck on LPG, rusty, new ball joints bearings control arms, rear end stuff as well, basically these blokes have the cash so who really cars, its does not have the rear seats like the F350 has, so its really and old tow truck and never ever looked after, the spark plugs are properly so old they will snap when trying to get them out ? Especially running on LPG, due to the extra heat, wrong plugs and there you go running bad as? Noticed no paperwork on the windscreen as well, due to not buying a car with a The RWC, vic roads take notice, lol :)

putting thicker oil in say a car or truck that runs 5w30 to say 15w30 will cause bearing damage..oil that is to thick cant get into the engine bearing as good and causes heat and wear to them...if you do change it to thicker oil stay with the thicker oil going back to the thinner oil wont be enough anymore for the gap that has ben worn into the bearings :)
A diesel conversion would be ideal, but its a tow car/truck. Bin the current gas setup and speak to gas reaserch or another reutable gas place and do what you have to do to make it reliable and after the other things are sorted to make it legal and bulletproof it should be apples. Its a work ute not a show pony or a drag weapon. Its never going to be fast on the streets, so a reliable gas setup should make the heavy girl do its job with a car on the back. And its a clevo, it takes some form of effort or ignorance to break a low powered one.
Greg Rankin I’ve done plenty of lpg stuff in the past. Had turbo charged rotary and rb30 on straight gas that I built and tuned myself, so don’t need to talk to anyone about how to set them up. However, as we said in the video, the gas is 100% going.
