    • Amazing Drone Footage ...
    -------------------------------------------------
Chicago is famous for its trains. In the days of steam trains, almost every train crossing the country would stop in Chicago. Even today the Chicago area, especially just south of the city, is cross-crossed with railroad tracks.
At this junction in Dolton IL, the Union Pacific tracks cross the Norfolk Southern, CSX, and Indiana Harbor Belt. Just south, there is a railroad yard on the UP line, and about a mile northwest of the junction there is a big steel mill just off the NS tracks.
In January 2017, we decided to bring our drone to the junction. In this video, you'll see great aerial footage of trains up to 2 miles long stretching off to the horizon.
This is part 2 of 2.

My cousin lived in a house on the curve and we could watch the trains from their backyard. The noise wasn't that bad.

This looks really cool. I've alway wanted a better perspective to see where the New York Central ran through Dolton.

Trains normally move faster, but not through Dolton or anywhere else south of Chicago. It's fine for trains to go fast out in the country on long straight sections of track, but the area south of Chicago is cross-crossed with tracks. Sharp curves, huge interchanges like the one in the video, freight yards, other trains everywhere, and other tracks constantly joining in or splitting off from any route.

Another reason the trains might be moving slow, besides the crossing of track and switches, is that the men that are working at the "diamond(s)" have what is called "Worker Protection". The person designated "in charge" of the WP will have issued a "speed restriction" for that area that which sets a speed limit that a train engineer MUST observe. It is used to protect the folks working on or around the rails in that particular area from being hit by the train. If you listen closing you can here the person in charge of the worker protection blow a whistle (@3:25) alerting the workers to move to a safe area while the trains passes.
