Psychedelics opened up my mind to new potentialities and modes of being. It gave me an appreciation of awareness itself, and all of the possible ways we can experience the illusion of self. But at the same time, I know what is pure hallucination vs. a brain representation of a world outside of me. No brain representation or experience, as an embedded observer, can escape the hard problem of consciousness, the "explanatory gap". We need people who can intuitively work with abstract, complex objects and representations to understand *what must be so* in order to cause the reality we observe. Susskind is one of the brightest minds we have today working on these questions in the philosophy of physics and mathematics. People can be blissfully unaware about the nature of reality, but they will always suffer without being able to know the cause.
