Patriarchy, prosperity gospel and evangelicals pushed me away from the CURRENT incarnation of the church and more toward the mystical abrahamic traditions of Gnostism, Kabbalah and Sufism. I have been to a few churches where they focus on the LOVE of Christ, rather than the martyrdom .. those churches aren't doing too bad. People like Nadia Bolz-Weber and Dr Rev Rebecca Parker I like. Honestly Buddhists do forgiveness better. I credit Pema Chodron and Eckert Tolle with getting me out of equating happiness with perfection. Things come together and they fall apart, that's how nature is. The art of living isn't in everything being perfect, but rather making room for all the "messy" stuff to happen and still be okay with it. Alan Watts, Robert Spira and Bob Randall got me to understand how much dualistic thinking harms rather than helps. You CANNOT have the light without the dark, and so much of nature isn't a simple binary yes or no the way our brains would like it to be. It's "yes, and ..". The contrasts can be painful but they help us to discern what is really important.
It's been replaced by superficial variants of itself taylor made for those with low impulse control and short attention spans. Listening to what passes as Christian music anymore is like listening to secular and worldly music
