- 57 kg prelim bout between Kendall Cross and Cary Kolat at the 1991 US International Open in Tampa, FL.
Cross (blue), had captured the 126 lb NCAA title in 1989 and was ranked #2 in the US at the time of this match. Kolat (red) was probably a High School Junior at the time.
Kendall Cross The only man to beat both Brands brothers.
Kolat beat NCAA Champ Sean O'Day of Edinboro when he was in high school. Kolat was a rare breed!
Spencer would beat him both senior year
As blurry as this film is, it's a beautiful match with lots of guts and grace. That throw of the Whizzer early on was beautiful. And Kendall always does something amazing. I remember watching him in the Olympics, beautiful throws.
great match colat is amazing, he's got some great instructional vids on youtube as well
Cary has quite the story! Dude is wicked!
What a match.
solid match.
Cross can't be explained I don't think. Someone gets a clear throw, a clear take-down--clean but wait, wait, Cross is NOT down--what the hell happened? I sure don't know.
Both of those guys would have been AWESOME DOIN JITZ
Kendall is so bendy and unorthodox. I find he is good at sucking his opponents into his game.
@Comicbookstoreguy177 The askren of freestyle
Cross was exciting to watch. He'd go for a risky move and try to quickly anticipate the counter. He scored many more points than were scored on him.
Seemed almost like he baited people with openings, that they just couldn't do anything with. And yet, they wore themselves out as he turned into gumby, them not getting a single point most of the time.
hell yeah an olympic gold medalist
yea he was 18 here, he was born in 73 and yea he's only 5'5" but he's pretty solid.
Kolat was amazing....but there was a reason that "Gumby" was an Olympic champ.
5'4
I love freestyle and despise it too. Scoring by fluke is unpredictable. How did we ever allow the world body of wrestling invoke these rules on the sport. If the world games, pan am games and Olympics invoked the rules of collegiate wrestling, it'd not be close between the United States and anyone else.
Very true
He was a junior at this point because his parents made him fail eighth grade so he would gain more wrestling experience and maturity
18 ang only 57 kg? he must be very short.
For all his accolades, Kendall's style is garbage. I can't stand watching him wrestle. Also, Kolat is a stud.
