Judging by the comments on twitter and my last video, there are quite a lot of people that just want to explore the game. This isn't a replacement for the original experience, it's a bonus for those who have already played it. It's not for new players and it's not meant to be scary. Some people just want to see how it all works.
I think something that may help a bit with some horror aspects is to periodically have optional 'electrical blackouts' near the later areas of the game where the cameras begin to bug out then shut off periodically or becoming unreliable (static filters when facing towards points of interest, inverting which screen is using what camera), and also periodically shutting off with the lights as well. It's only a suggestion I offer because it could still provide some similar horror elements while still allowing exploration. Also, it's an ambitious and unrealistic suggestion I make for nothing more than just silly fun to do it.
@@TabiTheCat This is for playing the game *after* the first playthrough, if you play the game again, it's not going to be as scary anyways, so why not go all in and see all the stuff you missed, and get a clearer view of all the cool stuff David put in the game unhindered. I feel like instead of treating this mod as being an expanded version of the intended experience of the original, it's better to see this mod as like, an alternate way of experiencing the game and its world. It can even be explained with some lore about this sub not being the SM-13, but a sub similar to the SM-8, which would explain why it's outfitted with better tools like cameras. I think best win is Dave admiring mod himself. I loved his reaction to it on Twitter, couldn't be better advertisement for a mod than game's creator talking about it in a positive way.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. David struck gold with Iron Lung. I think he could make a fully fleshed out game with its premise, one with a massive map and procedural generation, a wider variety of anomalies, encounters, and dangers with lore behind them, more things to have to do around the sub in case of damage sustained as a way to encourage players to be much more cautious as to not lose precious oxygen, and an actual purpose for depth. I kinda wish there was an alternate version of this mod that just "keeps the sub window open", showing a projection of the outside through that little porthole.
I tried this first and it was very hard to navigate or see much with it. The window is small and not in a very good spot when you're constantly looking down at the controls.
I try to find a balance where even if some topics might not make sense to everyone, the big picture is still understandable enough. Although I'm always working on improving those sections.
A major Idea is basically as the submarine gradually falls apart (pipe leaking & fires bursting) you should have made it to where some monitors break down and can't be turned on, especially the rear one moments before the big fish breaks in, personally that would add back a little bit of that anxiety level of uncertainty that the original game has, you start to basically go blind along with the deterioration of the sub because everything is falling apart
I am deeply scarred by the noise of the submarine's hull collapsing on itself due to intense pressure. Imagine drowning in a literall sea of blood probably hundereds of meters below the surface.
you'd probably die from the pressure and/or the monster before you could drown though, so at least it might be quick? not that that's much better, though, admittedly....
Very cool. I think adding a few things such as making the fish properly appear behind the sub, or just starting it further back so you can see it approaching on the screen, would've been a very in-spirit change to the game for this mod, but it works as you did it too. Unfortunately, the game just wasn't meant to be like this so parts like the many scares with the fish being 'close to you' on the sensors and so forth lose their edge when there's literally nothing there.. though it could always just be in your blind spots, I suppose. Quite interesting, and the mod is a simple yet great addition to the game and certainly nice for finding all those little unmarked ruins.
Yeah, I opted not to change it so that people can see a little bit of how it works behind the scenes. Like you mentioned there isn't anything there a lot of the time. But sometimes there's some interesting things to see, like the fish eye popping up briefly while you take a photo. Actually putting in stuff to make it look like it "should" be would be a much bigger project.
Now just give it a torpedo launcher, a happy ending and a bobblehead on the dash. And turn the sea into baked beans in the lore as well, gotta stay advertiser safe for UA-cam!

This is so cool. It would completely ruin a first playthrough, but when you've already played once or even a few times, it's really interesting to see everything in "real time" like this.
I think what would’ve really been cool would be if when you take the picture that the fish shows up in the screens and the light in the sub shut off for a few seconds like it’s having an electrical problem, then when the screens and light come back on there’s nothing out there but you still get the giant fish in the picture
I feel like the bathroom example at 9:58 only applies to specifically people that sleep far away from their bathroom. Since most people's are usually either as a side room in their room, across the hallway from their room, or an illegal U-turn sha boing-boing from their room.
I think it would be cool to have events that make each camera gradually get shattered and stop working as you progress. so by the end you will be completely in the dark, like the game is normally.
my only criticism is that the depth and oxygen meters are covered up by the monitors, though it does kind of add to the whole "makeshift deathtrap submarine" vibe
What surprise me is that there's an actual map, i though that it was just a trick, and that the photos were hust PNGs, i didn't even inagine that it had an actual modeled map
I think you should lower the "hertz" of the display to something like 12/15, change it so that it occasionally changes to static for a few seconds too or possibly have the it so that the player would need to turn off and the display for it work again. It might also help the illusion to lower the resolution of the screens.
imagine a mod for iron lung like this, but it has all the things occurring ingame actually occurring outside the sub too for example: the portal looking more wonky & actually being able to see the blood boiling around it or seeing the fauna of the blood ocean stalking you from a distance or noticing something is following you in the dark...
A small suggestion is that maybe you could place the SubCamera at the top of the trench map, just so you can't see the top of it, and right before the window closes, make the screens turn on, and have the SubCamera lower down to the it's original height, it would be a cool effect
Someone else mentioned this too. Would be a nice effect, but the trench is pretty short. You'd still see a black screen for 90% of the intro because there's nothing to render on the way down.
It would probably take a lot of extra work and probably require some development but it would be really cool if you could see the creature in glimpses in the back window or have the cameras shut off temporarily when hitting something or being hit by the creature. Keep the whole “moments from collapse” feel of the sub even with the cameras
Funnily enough, I did actually think "cube" before you said it at 8:33. No parentheses, but I figures it would be an asset that they simply hadn't gone to the bother of naming. Was a bit surprised to see that I was right for the most part.
Might just slip in my experience here, theres another game that uses similar mechanics and the elements of "youre alone but not really" kinda gameplay, called Voices of The Void, both are rather simple games but caused so much dread and primal fear Im really happy that these types of games are booming lately :)
I would love to see a 3rd-person mod for Infliction by Caustic Reality; I really think it'd be fun to play from a different perspective & see some of the effects/character deaths from a new angle!
People keep saying the monitors should break over time, but I have an alternate suggestion (or one that could be used on top of that): The monitors run at a very low FPS. For example, maybe they only update every 5 seconds, so unless the player plans to inch their way forward EXTREMELY slowly (doable, but it'd be mind-numbing), they aren't getting 'live updates' on their location. This would also keep in line with the lore, as it suggests they're rather low-quality, AND it'd keep immersion when the sea monster spawns immediately behind them. EDIT: Or even when it hits them, since it could be assumed it's just moving really fast. This would be especially true if the monitors blacked out for a bit when it hits them. Also, instead of marking your location on the map, perhaps the ability for the player to write on it?

8:38 I know this guy whose name is Zeekerss, who is a Madlad for not naming any of the stuff he has in one of his games. I went browsing in the assets Mesh folder after asset ripping his game. And realised that all the monsters, props, etc. Were all labeled "Cube (#)", making it a literal hell hole to even share the models without having to rename them. But oddly enough, all objects and assets had their respectful names when you look through the object explorer ingame.
Most decompilers and asset rippers can't replicate the data 100%. Jumbled names are especially common. But the ones in this video are definitely the real names in the scene.
@@EphiTV I see, maybe the Iron Lung dev just wanted to see someone actually try to find the terminal? Zeekerss named his stuff kind of straight forward, as if you were meant to use the unity explorer. So yeah, Asset rippers aren't accurate like you said.
Its called Cube (3) because thats the automatically generated name in unity for making a 3rd duplicate of a cube. It could be that D.S. used a cube as a base for some random model like a pipe or a fire extinguisher, and then duplicated it and changed the position and model for it, and never bothered to rename it.
one thing i would have liked is when you get the pic of the fish's face is it's not there in the camera but when you take the pic it is and when you look back you can see like the back of it or something move off screen
it would be better if the cameras had low franerate, like making it take pictures for example 24 times a second to give it 24 fps view but you will he in 60, it will make it more immersive, and wil give off that crt feeling.
Think the last thing to do is to try and turn the "Monster" Into an entity. Though I am sure that would take a bit of work... maybe mix a few creatures into it... Like angler fish, whale and maybe a bit more monstrous. too maybe add in tentacles since that is a thing now for sea monsters. and yes this is an old video not sure if you are still doing Iron lung stuff

Since most people's are usually either as a side room in their room, across the hallway from their room,
or an illegal U-turn sha boing-boing from their room.
you shold have designed the cocpit of the ocean gate titan
I think it would be cool to have events that make each camera gradually get shattered and stop working as you progress. so by the end you will be completely in the dark, like the game is normally.
Bro looks like he’s gonna steal the moon
This would probably be more akin to what the SM-8 would’ve been like
Time for a "Titanic" mod, lul.
The Coalition of Iron if it had enough resources and gave enough of a stink to make an actually decent and functional submarine:
mannn i love that hoodie.. i need it. briliant vid! it's that type of content that creates the hard to descride kind of pure interest and curiousity
Thanks! The hoodie was from an artist on one of the printing sites, not official merch or anything. Maybe Redbubble, but it's been a while.
11:58 that god damn smirk 😂
my only criticism is that the depth and oxygen meters are covered up by the monitors, though it does kind of add to the whole "makeshift deathtrap submarine" vibe
aint no way this man just made the first ever mod for iron lung.
Your resourcefulness and creativity is really cool. Also you sound like Sam O'Nella Academy a bit which is also cool
Fantastic video, LOVE YO STUFF!
What surprise me is that there's an actual map, i though that it was just a trick, and that the photos were hust PNGs, i didn't even inagine that it had an actual modeled map
It blew up in june because of Nexpo's video about how terrifying the ocean is.
He did a big part about Iron Lung and how terrifying it is.
I think you should lower the "hertz" of the display to something like 12/15, change it so that it occasionally changes to static for a few seconds too or possibly have the it so that the player would need to turn off and the display for it work again. It might also help the illusion to lower the resolution of the screens.
The screens should also occasionally flicker.
@@Bacony_Cakes Or even better..
The screens are delayed, so you aren't seeing anything in real time
imagine a mod for iron lung like this, but it has all the things occurring ingame actually occurring outside the sub too
for example: the portal looking more wonky & actually being able to see the blood boiling around it
or seeing the fauna of the blood ocean stalking you from a distance
or noticing something is following you in the dark...
Without the horror aspect, a game like this about a one man submarine in first person would still be very interesting.
You'd still see a black screen for 90% of the intro because there's nothing to render on the way down.
i found your channel through the first iron lung video, and your content is great.
Might just slip in my experience here, theres another game that uses similar mechanics and the elements of "youre alone but not really" kinda gameplay, called Voices of The Void, both are rather simple games but caused so much dread and primal fear
Im really happy that these types of games are booming lately :)
Haven't heard of that one before. Yeah it's cool to see indie horror try out some new things now that the jump-scare craze is dying down.
You are a condemned prisoner, locked in a *totally radical sub* 💥💥🔥🤙🤙🤙🤙💯💯
I would love to see a 3rd-person mod for Infliction by Caustic Reality; I really think it'd be fun to play from a different perspective & see some of the effects/character deaths from a new angle!
can you make a mod where you find the titanic instead of the monster ?
your voice is so calm bro, i love it👍
I feel like only having one terminal camera would add to the atmosphere more. (as well as making the terminal display darker.)
Also, instead of marking your location on the map, perhaps the ability for the player to write on it?
dude, i didnt realize who you were until you showed your most viewed videos, and saw thatur the subnautica challenge guy! i havent watched u since one of ur first bz challenge videos
Haha yup a few of my videos have been blessed by the algorithm but I'm still a pretty small channel otherwise.
@@EphiTV smaller than deserved, not only did you make a sick iron lung mod, exposed its functionality, did the impossible stranded on an alien ocean, but so much more
@@EphiTValso, im only watching the vid now, cuz when u mentioned the shrek jumpscare at the start, it reminded me of a crappy roblox game about shrek in the backrooms that slowly turned into a horror game with updates
it got an update that added new levels, one of which was an iron lung minigame, so seeing shrek in iron lung reminded me abt it. u should check it out as a joke lol
always gotta point out a lain shirt, fire
I'm so excited to watch new video about Iron Lungs
This is probably the only mod that will ever exist for this game due to how simplistic it is
Well this assumes that someone wouldn’t make a mod adding their own original content.
I'm pretty sure someone else made a mod that lets you see outside the sub already, but yeah lol
"RGB not included"
No no I think you got it all there: Rust, Green, (and) Buttons
Its called Cube (3) because thats the automatically generated name in unity for making a 3rd duplicate of a cube.
It could be that D.S. used a cube as a base for some random model like a pipe or a fire extinguisher, and then duplicated it and changed the position and model for it, and never bothered to rename it.
I know, it's just funny that an important unique object has a default name shared with like 20 other things in the game.
@@EphiTV Yeah- that F2 key loses value when you are trying to quickly make a lore update to hook people before attention fades
That is super neat. I don't have a computer so I'll just enjoy it here.
one thing i would have liked is when you get the pic of the fish's face is it's not there in the camera but when you take the pic it is and when you look back you can see like the back of it or something move off screen
it would be better if the cameras had low franerate, like making it take pictures for example 24 times a second to give it 24 fps view but you will he in 60, it will make it more immersive, and wil give off that crt feeling.
You look like someone who would skate board to the candy store. This is a compliment. Your shirt makes it better.
Great video but man, you got the Henry V haircut lol
Impressive stuff! What a brilliant young man. I bet your parents are very proud of you.
Titan submarine experience:
It is never funny to joke about the ways real peiple have died. 😡
Would be really cool if the monster would be actually moving around and taking photos would flash the monster to delay him
Yea, now the coffin has a C.O.F.F.I.N. virtual cockpit. Awesome
Who knew that the submarine was actually an adf-01 falken. Truly a horror story
@@jezzaboi2168 Modders gotta mod, TLS vs Freak Fish.
@@HorizonSniper__ "still alive buddy?" - the fish probably idk
Think the last thing to do is to try and turn the "Monster" Into an entity. Though I am sure that would take a bit of work... maybe mix a few creatures into it... Like angler fish, whale and maybe a bit more monstrous. too maybe add in tentacles since that is a thing now for sea monsters.
and yes this is an old video not sure if you are still doing Iron lung stuff
Its a frog
imagine a mode so that the horror can still stay the same. while still keeping the explorer thing.
like multiple modes. for the mod.
Instead monitora add gyroscope
been wondering when I will see you again my friend.. sweet video today
Yeah, long project, but I actually had this ready-to-go about a week ago. Just takes a long time to get brand new games approved on Nexus.
@@EphiTV that is awesome my friend, keep up the Awesomeness
I uh...can think of ONE reason why this game is getting some resurgence
As someone who has no sense of orientation this mod actually makes me tempted to play it. (I bought the soundtrack as I adore the concept - I just know I'd get lost).
It blew my mind when I found out that you're actually moving around ain a real place, you just cant see any of it.
Bowl cut is crazy, but good video!
Yikes. I wonder if the 19 year old who was aboard the Titan submersible played this game before he got on board. Yikeroni! Rest in pepperoni!
