This is a review of the SIGMA 100-400mm Lens designed from the ground up for Sony E Mount Mirrorless Cameras. Lenses like this are perfect for wildlife, outdoor sports, capturing kids and pretty much anything else you can think of where you need some extra zoom range.
What makes this lens unique is that it's designed for mirrorless bodies. That means it's smaller, lighter and designed to work specifically with Sony E Mount and the L Mount Alliance.
Since the zoo is closed, I borrowed a few kids to test this lens out. Being that I was using a Sony, I was able to utilize lock-on tracking and eye-af which makes photographing kids much easier. The lens focused fine, the OS worked well and the zoom range is extensive. I do expect a 150-600 one day, but that's going to much heavier and larger then this 100-400mm lens.

WHO WANT THIS LENS????? I'm GIVING AWAY A CAMERA VALUED UP TO $4,999!!! Enter the SUper HUGER Camera Giveaway right here bit.ly/megafro2020
Yes please 😲 gimmi gimmi gimmi haha although would force me to finally upgrade camera
I'd love an Art lens equivalent someday. I love my Sigma Art 24-70 for the Sony.
Tis would be nice, especially for I.
Does it allow 20fps when on an A9? Or limited to 10fps?
I photographed some wildlife with it last night. Really sweet lens. Of course I'm a slight bit biased ;)
I love your videos man. I’m 43 and it’s just down to earth and real. Appreciate it.
I’m buying this lens today. Been endlessly researching between 150-600 sigma, all Sony telephoto lenses, tamron etc. And I feel this is the best fit for zoo/ animal / wildlife photography in my budget
Hey, now that you've had it for a while, how is it holding up? Do you regret not getting the 150-600? Cheers
Happy to see this lens from Sigma. Still waiting for the 150-600 for Sony E-Mount.
U can easily get that range on the apsc lineup
You can pump the zoom through the lens hood, that's why the lens hood design it is in the low part, to put your fingers there too, like it happens in the DSLR 100-400 lens.
I am rooting around in the couch right now looking for loose change. I want this lens. A7RIII, 24-105 f4, 100-400, Travel kit complete.
I really want Sigma to make a 70-200mm for e mount
it has been announced way before tamrons 70-180 yet it never came out... I am slowly giving up waiting
The Tamron 70-180mm is an absolute beast of a lens; I love shooting with it!
@@adrian_de_graaf I almost went with it, but I ended up pre-ordering the Sigma. I still have my Tamron 70-200 for my Canon 6D and that camera is still just fine for studio portraits.
@@adrian_de_graaf I would have bought that one if it wasn't so expensive here in Europ, and if it was compatible with the Sony 2x converter (it's not).
I use the sigma 70-200 sport for Canon with the mc-11 adapter. A bit heavy but works great.
Jared, thanks for the video. After watching the video, I began to search for the Sigma 100-400 lens only in Canon EF mount. I checked with all of the major sellers, you know who they are, but also because of your recommendation I checked out Allen's Camera. All of the major online sellers had the lens for $799.00 and I almost dropped my teeth when I saw Allen's Camera price of also $799, but wait, they had a $190 instant rebate which made my price only $609. I instantly ordered the lens, thank you for recommending Allen's Camera and this will not be my last purchase from them.
this lens looks like a lot of fun. I'll totally get it if released for the RF mount.
@@gerardferry3958 Interesting, I'll look into it.
Agree RF mount option will take my money instantly
@@gerardferry3958 what lens exactly are you talking about?
There are many parents who like taking pictures of their kids playing sports in fields, like baseball or football, and this would appeal to them. And given the great low light performance of Sony's newer cameras, it should do well in indoor settings too, like indoor sports or recitals and plays. And at under a grand, this should appeal to a lot of beginning professionals who want to get into shooting indoor events like graduations but don't have the budget for Sony glass.
The lens look quite nice. Though I don't know if your review meets the target market of this lens. I don't believe many will buy it for portraits (and even if you got some nice pictures there!), but mostly for a budget choice for nature/bird/sports photography. Instead of taking pictures of the kids, should have taken pics of a dog running and jumping around, or birds from your place, and whatnot, as those need the high shutter speeds on which you really didn't show the performance.
I think his hole joke was to use kids instead of animals because they randomly run, jump and role around like athletes or... animals xD
Valid point! I was looking for its sport performance more than anything
I just bought this lens used from Japan and I can't wait to get it!
Sigma has been knocking it out of the park lately. Great quality and affordable. I hope they make some for the RF mount.
Well this aged well 💀
@@wyoder9511 Yeah. I'm selling all my Canon gear lol.
Thanks for answering all of my questions in this video. I’m thinking I’ll use it for my son’s soccer outside of course.
I was thinking of the dslr version. I'm glad I waited. I want this eventually. When I have to do sound board shoots again
Man I enjoyed to watch this video !
Keep up with the good work and a fine sense of humour!!!
I really enjoy your humour, thank you for doing something different from others. Your videos are unique and fun to watch, while also pack in all the relevant information needed. Great job 🙏💗
Would love to see this compared to the Sony SEL70350GOSS
I dont shoot sony, but the lack of grain at ISO 2500 for that sunset shoot was pretty damn good with that lens!
EYE Want One! Nice review as always Mr. Polin. Much appreciated!
I have the Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS since a while.
Love it!!!
That looks like a handy lens and a good price too .
I was going to pick up that 70-300 (used) next month. Tempting to wait for the Sigma..! In Canada it would be like, $8000 tho!
It should be lighter than Sigma so it will be a better travel companion. I wonder about image quality out of 70-300, there is slow amount of reviews available on UA-cam.
@@sihill1989 i have the 70-300 G ( fir about 2 years) and I'd recommended it over any other mid range zoom made for Sony E. Its much under rated but a great travel lens as its pretty light too. Image quality is good in my opinion. Better than the 70-200 f4 which im selling now as its no longer needed.
Michael Millward thank you. I’ve ordered 70-300 few days back and waiting for delivery. I find this new sigma interesting and figuring out whether I should keep Sony on arrival or send it back. In the end I can stay with Sony and change later on if needed.
I used to not like you, Jared, but after I watched your history of Jared video and see how you've worked your ass off to get where you are, I'm a fan. Congratulations! I know. Too many commas.
I’ve pre-ordered (in Australia). Cost wise and for performance, plus light weight make the decision to buy easy. Thanks for a great review.
Thank you for your review. Just purchased this lens today!
awesome! I was waiting for a cheaper alternative with more than 200mm.
I wonder how this is for video?? How good would it be on an A7C?
Holy Moly! I've been dreaming about Sony 200-600 but it is way too expensive for me. This lens, on the hand, might be IT. Thanks, Jared, your reviews are the best.
Sigma is porting their Sigma 60-600mm F4,5-6,3 DG OS HSM Sports to the E-Mount. Just need to be patient...
@@stacylynn2187 cant wait for that lens in e mount
@@stacylynn2187 Seriously? Damn, I just bought a bicycle. Hopefully, I will be able to save fast enough for one of these lenses. Thanks a lot for letting me know.
I just picked it up 3 years later….struck a deal for $230 so I couldn’t beat that. Looking forward to testing it out.
That sounds suspiciously cheap!
Might get this for my Lumix S1, and as I have sad before the reviews is more than just reviews. You can always learn something about photography.
Hi Jared, which one do you prefer? Sigma 100-400 or Tamron 150-500?
That range and price is tempting. I have used my Nikon 200-500mm with adapter on my Sony a7ii for wildlife shots.
What brand Adapter bro? I own Procore + 200-500mm in A7iii : AF is bad
The wind tunnel test did it for me, I've seen enough, I'm getting one!
This will be my next lens for my A7iii. Wind tunnel test was the deciding factor!
Been meaning to get something beyond 200mm, almost dropped money on the Sony 70-350 G for my a6500, but now this gets announced. Kinda glad I didn't jump the gun back then. This will work on both my a7RII and a6500. Definitely worth the wait.
Thanks for the review. I enjoyed watching this video.
I am glad it passed the wind tunnel test , without the wind tunnel test it would have been a. " no go " , thank you Jarod 👌.
On a serious note , it seems to do the job fine ,
Wondering when it will be available in the shops , I cannot see a mention of it down under as yet.
Hi... 🤚🏽 the one for Canon isn’t good??
I really loved this review. It was so much fun.
Have you also tested the Sony 70-350 for APSC ? Do you think That’s the Sigma is a better Option?
Because i use the Sony and don’t know, if i sold it for the Sigma🤔
This is perfect for me. I just completed my Tamron trinity and I was looking at the 100-400 GM but I would much rather spend half of the amount! Anyone know if Tamron is planning on doing a 100-400?
150-500mm
Definitely getting this one once I have the money saved. it will work on my a6100 until I can afford a full frame Sony.
Sigma is very good at marketing! This lens has so much potential... except for night photography. Tried setting up my tripod and take photos of a waxing gibbous moon. Lens is so damn heavy without the tripod collar. My camera tripod foot was not balanced enough. Sigma got us!
Coming to the L mount as well. Gonna get me one for my S1R
I wish Jared could do a little review to see the compatability, but for the price I'm gonna go for it aswell!
How about using this as a 150-600mm equivalent on Sony's APS-C bodies? In general, how about using Sony FE lenses on APS-C bodies? This is one where the crop factor works in your favor to give you more reach.
Me watching: photo looks a little grainy
Jared zooms in on the photo
Me: okay dayum that was just youtube
Glad you brought up its not a good sports lens indoors!
Need to find a quality e-mount sports lens for indoors
Sigma 100-400 vs Sony 70-350 which one is best?
Thank you for this review Jared! I own a SONY a7iii and really want to get into wildlife photography. This lens is actually in my budget. I'm also saving for the Tamron 70-180 and 28-75 :)
Want something for bird sanctuary, zoo, airport shots…….looked at 200-600 but this seems more carry friendly
I'm sad I didn't hear: LLLLLLLLL MOOOOUUUUNNNNT AAALLLLIAAANNCEE!
When he first used that, he was so making fun of it but with every video he is releasing when he uses that, he is less sure if it really is appropriate.
I highly doubt he'll ever ditch his Sony for an L-Mount Camera (if he's going to switch, it will be most likely Canon or Nikon), but Panasonic and SIGMA did earn some respect with their L-Mount releases. The lenses are all awesome, one better than the other and the cameras released so far haven't been perfect, but not worse than what the competitors offer, just different.
I got this lens for wildlife and landscape photography, and was actually pretty disappointed. Even with higher shutter speed at 400mm the subjects were not nearly as sharp as I expected them to be. I returned it, and put down some more cash for the 200-600.
Would love to see a comparison between this lens and the Sony.
Check out Dustin Abbot's review
I love your reviews!!! thanks
I feel Sigma has been designing more interesting lens then anyone else lately. For instance how many companies have made a f/1.8 zoom for aps-c cameras.
AWESOME! Perfect fpr plane-/helicopterspotting! 400mm is what I need cause the Sony Sel 55-210mm (315 mm equivalent) gets too short on my Sony A6300 to be honest!
I have the same camera - sony a6300. Did you end up getting this lens? Will it work okay with the a6300. Looks great to build on a mid range price range set for wildlife photography!
I'm very happy with the performance of my Sigma 100-400 Contemporary for Canon EF + MC-11 I use with my A6500. I'd like to see someone do a comparison of the adapted lens and the new one. I'm guessing there wouldn't be enough difference to tempt me to upgrade ( I hope). I think the 100-400 and the Sigma 16mm f1.4 are about the sharpest lenses I own.
I picked up a 100-400 Canon from Allen’s on Tuesday, store is back open for in store purchases.
Very nice. There's no way I'm paying what Sony is asking for the GM, but this one I'll consider getting.
great review as always. I would've liked to see a brief AF video on this lens
Ill be 100% getting one of these for some plane spotting!
"even at 5.6 the composition is nice" man it would suck if that would actually change because of the f-stop
Believe it or not, the f-stop does change how good/bad the composition is. If you have a lot of background elements visible, it makes it harder to create a good composition as you have to deal with them and integrate them in a good way (composition), but if the background is very blurry, then it makes the composition easier as those elements won't interfere too much with the focused elements.
@@youuuuuuuuuuutube yeah I know
I like your style. Good review. I learn a lot just looking at your videos.
Thanks for this review. Can you please test it with Sony APSC such as a6000 :)
Deffo considering this over the gmaster as it would net me the tamron 70-180 2.8 also within the same money - any tests on the a9 ?
Sound like a no-brainer for this price if you don't need the 600mm. On the other hand you can use it with a APS-C camera and then you'll have them too.
Or use the Super asp-c mode on a A7 3/4R camera
@@jesha1995 or just crop, it is the same as using apsc mode :)
@@jurajbenadik4049 Has been proven that the aspc mode is actually sharper than manually cropping :3
@@jesha1995 oh okay, thanks! Glad to learn something new :)
On yet another hand, with 600mm on APS-C you get 900mm (960 as a Canon user). One of the reasons I still don't have neither; the longer the better, but I'd rather have the lighter lens than the lighter wallet 😆
Amo seus videos !!! O melhor de todos !!! Congrats from down here in Rio de Janeiro.
I just bought this lens for my Sony A7C..
Unfortunately it was so frustrating when my A7C didn't allow me to get IBIS working together with this lens.
Somebody please share your thoughts with this lens.. Thanks for helping me. 😍😘✌🏼👌🏼
i hoped for the l-mount alliance shout but it didnt happen now im sad :-(
do you shoot raw?
Did anyone notice Juliana’s shoes were on backwards? 14:06
I would say the wrong foot. If they were pointing backwards she would be screaming like crazy.
So were her brothers, his legs are crossed.
Wish someone would drop a 100-400 for the Z mount. Read that Tamron is working on it. Not sure if I should just get an F mount one and deal with the adapter or wait... I hate waiting.
I defiantly want to get this lens.
If I did not already have the GMaster 100-400, this would be on my to buy list.
Sigma is killing it
Bang for the buck. E mount really saves money.
This or sony 200-600 which one is best?
finally!! no other 100-400 in this price range for e mount
100-400 is a fantastic range. i use the newer canon 100-400L and its phenomenal
Doesn’t this Lens have a push/pull zooming function which makes total sense and great for fast action?
I was dreaming of the Sony version as its close focus mfd is great, but this has the potential to make my dream come true
What's your main camera?
If you watch his previous videos you wil see he mainly uses a Sony a7RIV or a9II
Love your videos
Is this lens still the 3rd party go to for these ranges? Or has another lens been released since this that would be best to buy?
I did get kind of nostalgic about Philly from when I lived there for a while though. Getting emotional over a few buildings
Can you show some examples of your shots with and without a UV filter , to back up your disdain for a UV filter ?
It´s not so stupid to set the zoom to the outer end. I think you use it just more often than the focus and with this position it is much better stabilized.
Just bought this lens for $799 on Adorama. Did I just get lucky by their pricing mishap or do they usually have sales?
As we’re going into winter, I really want to try and photograph the surfers and Kitesurfers once we get the big Atlantic swells.
I was looking at the Tamrom 150-500 but I dunno if that’s over kill or not.
What would you or others recommend between that and this? If I was rich and money wasn’t an issue I’d get the Sony 200-600, but I think it’s well too much money as it’s not something that would get use day to day.
Would this Signa 100-400 suffice for the surfer images, and maybe the occasional birds etc? Or is the Tamron 159-500 the way to go?
It’s one or the other.
Liking that lens thanks 👍😁
I got the Sigma 100-400 for my A7III and I love it. I am desperately waiting for Sigma to get the 70-200 2.8... Jared, any chance you can reach to Sigma and update us on it? I also have the Sigma 24-70 2.8 and love it.
The Tamron 70-180 2.8 is cool. Check it out.
Have the same body and 24-70. Your shoulder/neck might pay for it on a long day but it's worth it. Really want the 100-400!
love it, love it, gotta have it!
Your niece having her shoes on the wrong foot while laying in the hammock was tripping me out. Lol
My Hipster Trinity would be Sigma 12-24, Sony 24-105 and this Sigma 100-400
So Jared, I feel like since you didn’t say something along the lines of “and now we’re just waiting on Sigma to make this available for the other mounts like Canon and Nikon” that we shouldn’t get excited and possibly start to look elsewhere for this range of lens. Am I right...? Just blink twice for yes-
It's quite unlikely. Even if they start to release new mirroless lens for rf and z mount, it takes time, and 100-400 won't be their priority.
Does this do well for action shots?
This would make for a pretty compact 150-600 setup for APS-C shooters.
Or both with a7riv users
How is it comparing to 100400gm for the price?
Skittles is my favorite preset of all of them. Excellent starting point for my photos before tweaking.
How does this compare to the 150-600 by Sigma? For only $100 more is the extra reach worth it?
Is the full production model better then this pre- production model? Do you know ? What about speed on the A1 ?
Theirs no 200-600 GM lens Jared just FYI. It's a G lens only
