I only watch a handful of lists but I would def check out more of yours also because you make unique picks that I don't see popping up everywhere. First, love your standard videos, but videos like these are always welcome from creators IMO! I didn't play nearly as many 2022 releases, but did have enough for a Top 5 of Kites, The Spill, Disney's Sorcerer Arena, Long Shot the Dice Game, and The Guild of Merchant Explorers.
I love love love the way you present, you would make the most boring topic fun to watch. My top 10 is totally different: Tiletum, Weather Machine, Lacrimosa, Wayfarers of the S.T., Woodcraft, Discordia, Impression, Twilight Inscription, Shogun No Katana, Magna Roma, and very honorable mentions are Get on Board and Village Rails.
I just wanted to say that I love your normal videos. You're hilarious. I also really enjoyed this video. The quick hits was an especially cool idea that I haven't seen anyone else do. It's funny how just a couple of words can get you excited about a game you didn't know about.
Thank you for this! Enjoyed hearing your honest-to-goodness views. This year, Cat In The Box was a favorite game for me, and I also enjoyed Guild of Merchant Explorers more than I expected. But, as a history buff, my top game this year was John Company, 2d Ed. I love the player interaction, variety of events and overall goofiness of the game, which is probably the best way to approach the East India Company.
I really enjoyed the more informative Paula. You presented a serious list in your own bright lighthearted style. Seeing you this way makes you more identifiable and real. Much like Matthew's "answers the internet " segments make him a more relatable face on the internet. Maybe one day I get a game in with you two....

Paula, I first found you with your super cute Parks videos. Now I'm going to follow you because I love your delivery and your content! You're just so much fun to listen to! I knew you were a cat person! Love your dimple too! I have played 80 games this year, all of the heavy euro strategy type. Ark Nova, Scythe, Terraforming Mars, Brass, etc.
My favourite from 2022 so far are: 1) Woodcraft - action wheel with bonuses, dice manipulation, excellent solo 2) Tiletum - dice drafting with the die determining ALL of the following: type and number of resources you get AND type and strength of action you get, bonuses that can be taken even in the middle of your main action (so freedom galore) 3) Carnegie - active player chooses the action/income triggered for all players, player gets income if they can retrieve a worker from the region in question, and the action dictates what type of departments players are able to run on their board. There's route building on the map, there's endgame bonus scoring that players can "invest" in. 4) Zapotec - gives the feeling of a T-game, but in faster package. You choose a card to play each round that dictates turn order, type of income triggered on your grid, and what building restriction you have (either type of building, type of terrain to build into, or region to build into) 5) Flamecraft - artisinal dragons, what's not to love? Super cute, you build up the action spots collectively so they get more enticing.
The best part about Planet Unknown is the simultaneous play. I can play a 6 player game in about an hour. And the Lazy Susan is so helpful. One of my favorites of last year is Mosaic. I like Civ games and this was approachable enough without all that heavy combat. Love this format. Thanks for sharing.
Your number one was probably my number 1 of the year as well. If you loved it I’d strongly recommend checking out Monsters on Board - very different mechanism (dice drafting and placement), but it has similar push-up-the-tracks mechanisms and loads of combo-tastic goodness like Planet Unknown. Those two were probably my top two games of 2022 overall. Technically Frosthaven was 2022 but given as I didn’t receive my copy until January 2023 I’m not counting it lol
This was super valuable. I'm always interested in boardgame entertainment personality interests and game tastes. Not sure we'd match up tastes well, but hearing the quick reviews still garners my interest in several of these.

I didn't play enough new games to make a top 10 of 2022 list, but the ones that would make my "favourites" list are: Mosaic, Endless Winter, Wonderland's War, Heat: Pedal to the Metal and . . . Planet Unknown. Although I'd say I need to play each of these one more time to rank them. I really thought I'd see Wonderland's War on your list. I enjoyed your video!
Planet Unknown is SO GOOD! Also, I’ve had Sniper Elite (also never played the video game) on my to buy list for a little while. I’ll have to pull the trigger this year.

Amazing list! Some I really want to try like Turing machine and cat in a box and completely agree with everything you said about planet unknown, hands down the best game I played in 2022.
Definitely #1 for me was Planet Unknown with Village Rails and Mosaic coming in as great discoveries of the year as well. I have enjoyed the games of Heat I have played so far as well and look forward to digging into that a bit deeper.
Have you played Heat or Wonderland’s War? I haven’t played a ton of stuff from 2022 yet, but those were two standouts for me, especially Heat. Also, was happy to see some straight laced content from you. I love your comedy, but this was good too, so if it brings you some joy, I would absolutely encourage more of this style content. I just also hope you don’t quit doing the board game comedy stuff either, because that stuff just makes me happy. But never do UA-cam content unless you get some satisfaction from it.
I haven't played either of those yet! Hopefully will be able to check them out soon. And don't worry, there's definitely still board game comedy coming out on this channel!
I'm recently starting to really love trick taking games. Cat in the Box is on my list. I love Tournament at Camelot/Avalon. The Crew and Scout are also solid. I recently picked up 9 Lives and Ghosts of Christmas from AllPlay/Board Game Tables. Have you played those? And I'm super excited for their next kickstarter which has the 2 player co-op trick taking game Sail.
I've had a quick demo game of 9 Lives but haven't had a chance to really sit down and properly play it yet, but I'm looking for every opportunity to do so, I really want to get it played!

I got to play Sniper Elite four player and it was one of the best gaming experiences of 2022! I was on the team trying find the sniper and we had him cornered, but he escaped! Such an epic finish! If you have a good player as the sniper, this game is awesome!
Ok, I've only made it to your #10....But a chaotic game about synchronized swimming? I'm in! Please tell me someone said the quotation "I'm not a strong swimmer" from the old SNL skit. (Edit Added). Finished now....I soooo want to play Sniper Elite, I've only heard good things about it. (will definitely watch your twitch play with Rodney and Matthew!) Going to also check out Planet Unknown! One of my favorite experiences from PAXU this year was playing Ready, Set, Bet in our hotel room with a bunch of people. By the end we were all standing around the table yelling: “Horse! Horse! Horse! Horse!” 😂
My favorites were Caesar! Seize Rome in 20 Minutes, Atiwa, Wayfarers of the South Tigris, and Sniper Elite. Throw Horizons of Spirit Island and Wingspan Asia if there if standalone “expansions” count. And both Dune Imperium expansions if straight expansions count.
"In the kinda need.." 🤣 do you track if you won, or are you the purist data collector or the competitive... Love your list though, sync or swim and ready set bet sound fun!!! Turing Machine was definitely on my list - LOVED! I am going to have to check out Sniper Elite and Planet Unknown now though, so thank for those surprises.... SO MANY GAMES, NOT ENOUGH TIME 🤣
Some good picks. One that was a BIG winner for us in 2022 is Foundations of Rome. Big chunky buildings placed on a common grid map (ala Bunny Kingdom) for some great point salad. Think it was Kickstarter only, and a bit pricey (because Big chunky buildings). Also goes to 5-Players which is really nice.
i don't think i played a single 2022 release game last year so most of these were new to me...i think the only one i'd even heard of before was turing machine...but planet unknown sounds right up my alley...i'll have to check it out
Great list - the only bad part is that Planet Unknown is not available! I guess that is why it is "unknown" - no one can find it. :( I know there is a digital version but not the same in a game like this) - sigh - I hear there may be another KS in Q2 23 - fingers crossed.

I skipped around the video to see the different board game covers at first, and I happen to pause it at a funny spot where Sniper Elite was up and Paula just has this incredibly intense look on her face. Now I want to know more about this game.
HEAT came at the end of the year but it's something special. Runner up would probably be Wayfarers or Woodcraft. Great list, wish Planet Unknown would come back in stock x.x.

I hate ranking and rating games too. I would have never guessed your #2, especially knowing the graphic violence of the video game. But everything I've heard about the board game has been high praise.
Ok after reading many of your post I see you have not played Wonderlands War, Endless Winter, Flamecraft, and Foundations of Rome. I have all these and can easily teach them. If you can make it to BGG Con in Spring I would be willing to teach them.
Is it possible to share pics of the layouts of potential game states or the components of the game? It helps if you have pic overlay while you talk about the game to follow along.
Paula, how did Flamecraft not make it on here? I mean there's no polyominos BUT it's hella combo heavy and cute dragons! I feel like you'd love it, I know me and my play group do
Amazingly condensed informational video! As you are a deduction fan: Did you get to play Feed the Kraken in 2022? If you didn't, you might want to give it a try this year. It is a journey you will remember and discuss for days - everytime you play.
I feel so lucky I was able to get my hands on a copy! You can play it online with the virtual table top app Sovranti and it's a really good implementation of it, also.
The only crossover we have is Decorum. I haven't played any other game on your list. I really have a hard time choosing as well. My number 1 is Ostia? Maybe? Probably?
Tile placement and deduction are some of Emily and I’d favorites as well!!! This year was GREAT for us haha. I wonder if you have tried Suspects by Hachette?

I've had a quick demo game of 9 Lives but haven't had a chance to really sit down and properly play it yet, but I'm looking for every opportunity to do so, I really want to get it played!

Very excellent selection of games Paula! I thought I'd done a video and turns out, I'd wasted my time gabbing about other useless game stuffs! My top ten from 2022; 10. Lacrimosa, 9. Turing Machine, 8. Libertalia: Winds of Galerest, 7. Carnegie, 6. Skymines, 5. Ready, Set, Bet, 4. Beer & Bread, 3. Wayfarers of the South Tigris, 2. Heat: Pedal to the Metal, 1. Frosthaven.
I got to play Sniper Elite four player and it was one of the best gaming experiences of 2022! I was on the team trying find the sniper and we had him cornered, but he escaped! Such an epic finish! If you have a good player as the sniper, this game is awesome!

One of my favorite experiences from PAXU this year was playing Ready, Set, Bet in our hotel room with a bunch of people. By the end we were all standing around the table yelling: “Horse! Horse! Horse! Horse!” 😂
My favorites were Caesar! Seize Rome in 20 Minutes, Atiwa, Wayfarers of the South Tigris, and Sniper Elite.
Throw Horizons of Spirit Island and Wingspan Asia if there if standalone “expansions” count.
And both Dune Imperium expansions if straight expansions count.
"In the kinda need.." 🤣 do you track if you won, or are you the purist data collector or the competitive...
Love your list though, sync or swim and ready set bet sound fun!!! Turing Machine was definitely on my list - LOVED! I am going to have to check out Sniper Elite and Planet Unknown now though, so thank for those surprises.... SO MANY GAMES, NOT ENOUGH TIME 🤣

Glad that the Roll & Build version fixed the runaway leader problem in the original (& excellent) My City!
The luck of the dice rolls determining the shapes actually really helps balance that problem out. At least, that was my experience
Some good picks. One that was a BIG winner for us in 2022 is Foundations of Rome. Big chunky buildings placed on a common grid map (ala Bunny Kingdom) for some great point salad. Think it was Kickstarter only, and a bit pricey (because Big chunky buildings). Also goes to 5-Players which is really nice.
I haven't had a chance to try Foundations of Rome but I've heard good things and would love to check it out sometime
i don't think i played a single 2022 release game last year so most of these were new to me...i think the only one i'd even heard of before was turing machine...but planet unknown sounds right up my alley...i'll have to check it out

Great list - the only bad part is that Planet Unknown is not available! I guess that is why it is "unknown" - no one can find it. :( I know there is a digital version but not the same in a game like this) - sigh - I hear there may be another KS in Q2 23 - fingers crossed.

I skipped around the video to see the different board game covers at first, and I happen to pause it at a funny spot where Sniper Elite was up and Paula just has this incredibly intense look on her face. Now I want to know more about this game.
HEAT came at the end of the year but it's something special. Runner up would probably be Wayfarers or Woodcraft. Great list, wish Planet Unknown would come back in stock x.x.
Ahh, I haven't played any of those yet. Hoping to get to try out HEAT soon!

I would have never guessed your #2, especially knowing the graphic violence of the video game. But everything I've heard about the board game has been high praise.
Ok after reading many of your post I see you have not played Wonderlands War, Endless Winter, Flamecraft, and Foundations of Rome. I have all these and can easily teach them. If you can make it to BGG Con in Spring I would be willing to teach them.

planet unknown, the game that everyone likes and wants but has had the biggest availability issues. Still can’t get it in retail Australia.
I feel so lucky I was able to get my hands on a copy!
You can play it online with the virtual table top app Sovranti and it's a really good implementation of it, also.
I went straight to amazon and zatu for the top 5 games and couldn't find any of them, I guess none are out in the UK yet and that makes me sad

Tile placement and deduction are some of Emily and I’d favorites as well!!! This year was GREAT for us haha. I wonder if you have tried Suspects by Hachette?
Suspects is so good and I wanted to put it on the list because I got it in 2022, but it's from 2021 :(
