The floor turned out beautiful! I love that slate color. I wouldn't have thought to use such large tiles in that small a bathroom, but it and the grout lines adds a nice geometric touch. Also, less grout to clean for the win!
This slate tile is to die for!! I'm completely renovating my home built in 1892. It had the original slate roof and I hated having to replace it. I kept a lot of it that came off in whole pieces. I'm trying to keep/re-use as much of the original house as I can so I'm thinking about trying to use the slate to do the backsplash in my kitchen. Another job well done!!
Those long, dark tiles make the room look a lot more grand than the actual size of the bathroom might make you expect. I love it, especially all the info on how to properly install tiles.
Sam that brought back memories for me. 1) Well, how often do you get instructions to get wood wet? Right! That had to be fun! 2) The process looked exhausting. I've done tiling. Extremely satisfying when you are done, but tiling is so hard on knees - esp. when you get older so more power to you!
You are one busy and determined woman! You work a full time job, create content and keep a smile on your face! You are awesome! Keep up the good work and I’m here for the long haul! BTW, the tiles turned out great!
I love how explain everything. You have really inspired me to do my own things. I really want to renovate my kitchen… probably a really big first thing to tackle, but I think I’m going to do it.
The best thing about a bathroom remodel is the day it is done. For so small a part of a house it can eat up time and money almost as badly as the kitchen.
Love the tile. My dad and I actually redid my bathroom a couple years ago and I used very similar tile. Mine didn’t have the texture yours has. I prefer yours. I used the same tile for the walls in the shower as the floor but I used a shower pan. The bathroom came out great but it was tough tiling vertically. Good luck with the rest!
Great video! Also, the reason you have to wet the wood subfloor before applying the thinset for ditra is because if you don't the subfloor will suck the water out of the thinset that is supposed to bond the ditra to the subfloor.
Oops, made a very similar comment before I saw yours. It can be easy to miss this step if you are trying to go by the directions, I know I almost missed it.
Excellent video. I was looking for a tiling video. UA-cam suggesting this one and finally it is very clear and definitely a life-saver. Open-source is the future of sharing information and helping each other out. This video definitely helped me. Thanks a million.
Love the porcelain slate. We used porcelain tiles that look like stone in our back and front entrances. They look just as beautiful as stone would and are easier to deal with.
Hi! This video is inspiring! Can you share a link, or explain what was used for the shower’s side walls? Looks like a large tile, I’m curious the size. Thank you!
What kind of product on the wall for water proofing? what product did you use for thin set and how did you mix it? Was there an additive? How did you lay it out and decide how you liked the layout?
9:05. VERY important tip about pre wetting the plywood floor. The way I understand it is that making the plywood damp prevents the dry plywood from pulling the moisture out of the thinset which can mess up the bonding to the Ditra. Also, very important to NOT use modified thinset between Ditra and tile, I wound up using the Ditra specific thinset from Schluter.
Yess. I mentioned this in the video, but I used all of the company’s recommended products to install this flooring system. Luckily, their product videos are so helpful!
Thanks for keeping the little details in, like the water being off, etc. that’s why projects always take longer than we think they will, and I’m sure it helps others not be defeated when they come upon problems in their diys. We can all remember that there are hiccups in everyone’s projects.
The tiles are beautiful. It's so nice to see a female knowing how to do all this DIY stuff :). When's bathroom reno part 3 coming!? I need to see more!
Dang woman. You crushed this. I have never undertaken anything like this type of DIY! Like caulking the bathtub is as close as I have gotten to this. 😂 I’m sorry the tiles didn’t work out but loved watching this! Felt like a cool unscripted tv show but like real life tv show. Diggin your vibe, Fun Size Sam! ❤️
I am new to your channel and love it!! The floor looks great and I absolutely love how you explained the waterproofing product and all the steps to it. Is there a particular thickness for the plywood board that you used or is there a standard thickness?
Not sure if I missed you mentioning it, but if you didn't talk about it, I would definitely put a grout sealer on all your grout lines....it definitely helps with cleaning down the road!
The tiler who did our floors said modern grout has a built-in in sealer so you don't need to seal, it but I did seal my rear entry tiles anyway just in case. I didn't seal the front entry and bathroom tile grout and after 13 years haven't had any issues with staining. Our grout is a beige brown not white so maybe that makes a difference?
The timing of your tiling is perfect for me. We had to rip up our tiled back step because the previous home owner tiled over slasto (do you even know what that is? It's like slate) the tiles were lifting because the slate was degrading underneath. We poured a new concrete sub floor and it's now fully cured so I'm ready to tile and because I'm going to sort of "Tetris" the off cut tiles from my bathroom renovation, my instinct was to do a dry fit, glad to see a professional apprentice such as yourself do the same with brand new tiles 😂 before I started I was going to double check if I should butter the tiles as well as the floor with the thinset, but now I don't have to 😉
I know this video is old, but when You buy tiles, I would suggest checking if they're from the same batch, as slight variations in color are expected in different batches. Same goes with wallpaper. Edit: spelling
I hope you got yourself a nice pastrami sandwich after filming the first part. But the word you’re looking for is Substrate. Subfloor is the wood planks or sheets that sit on the joists. Substrate is the next layer of floor. The membrane is great in showers or especially if you’re doing a curb (edit: not cut) less shower. Love the slate look porcelain. Well done, Sam. 💜
That looks epic, Sam! I had no idea you needed so many steps to install tiles. They are so dope! Loved the color It's great to see you so happy But can we please have your dad in all of your videos? He's so funny!
Hi, what tile cleaner did you use please? The material list link isn't working for me for some reason. My Sister just had her bathroom floor tiled (black tiles) and they have a bit of texture to them and are proving quite difficult to clean. Tried a few products on it, but not found anything that really works yet. Thanks
I'm just curious, did you want that goute to be darker? When you mixed it it looked much darker. I blame camera lens & lights. They _never_ show most artistic details properly. Looks great, can't wait to see what you do next.😘💕
@@diyhuntress Thank you SO much! I'm doing my BFF's bathroom soon & this info was honestly _amazing._ We'll watch out for that when we purchase. YOU ROCK!!😘💕
Looking spiffy!!! Good choice on tile. Should have hired you to tile our bathroom than the guy we did use...your work looks so much better than what he did.
Looks like the same grout I used in my bathroom and you dont need to seal it. It has a sealer mixed in. More grout is going that way now. So nice. Having to seal the grout kinda sucks and just takes another day out of being to use the bathroom.
Soooo it this the floor that you had to demo again?? Really hoping it's not as you did a fantastic job on it!!! Either way, stay Golden Ponyboy, Dirty Jersey out!!!
The technical terms for what the previous contractor did with the tile is "Spot bonding". It's TERRIBLE for adhesion as you guys saw. We joking call them wafers & or say the Cookie Monster tiled those wall with mortar cookies😂🤦🏻♂️👍. Lookin good so far Sam. Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!!
OK, OK, OK let's get this YT alligatorrhythm going again!! Just finished last video & dropped 3 comments to help with that one!! Keep on keepin on Sam, Dirty Jersey out!!
I removed my ensuite and then my kitchen backsplash and the tiles were stuck on with big blobs of black adhesive. They took chunks of my drywall with them. 🙄😢
