I love how romcoms have evolved over the years, with many even deconstructing the genre. In some, most notably "500 Days of Summer", the lead couple doesn't end up together, but they're all the better for it.
One thing about the RomCom genre is that, despite its perception of being unmasculine, many of its male stars were considered symbols of manliness. John Wayne, the embodiment of conservative masculinity, starred in RomComs like, The Quiet Man (1952), Donovan's Reef & McClintock( both 1963). Other conservative masculine actors like Clarke Gable and Cary Carey where also big RomCom stars (It Happened One Night & His Girl Friday) However, actors like Humphrey Bogart, Gregory Peck, and Henry Fonda who were the emboiments of liberal Hollywood were also tough guys that stared in RomComs (Sabrina-1954, Roman Holiday-1953, and Lady Eve-1941 respectively.) I think this is important to remember when it comes to discussions about the history of the genre, and about toxic masculinity and what genres are considered for men and what are considered for women.

My parents took me with them to a drive-in movie when I was six weeks old. The film? Sex and the Single Girl. 😂
The worst thing about feel good movies, is that once they're over, we go back to our boring and depressing lives
And then we realize how much our lives suck
I'm sorry, you sound like a miserable person. Do you not want to feel good?

Rom-coms have been great over the years, with many even storylines defining the genre, one of the best is Here On Earth, the lead couple did end up together at the very end when she passes away, it will make you cry, but it always comes back around over time.
The 90’s was the best era of the rom com. I hope it gets revived.
Like rom coms, superhero movies will eventually die out
And then we'll see it making a resurgence with projects that'll think outside the box, while spending less than a typical blockbuster project
It went from being in theaters to being on streaming. Another thing is that they're having more people of color and interracial couples with the first rom-com(though not many people will count it as such) being Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner in the 60s.
I agree, I love that they're creating works with interracial relationships, with neither party being white, namely "The Lovebirds", with Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae.
There was Hitch with Will Smith and Eva Mendes and Our Family Wedding with America Ferrera and Lance Gross. I can't really think of other rom-coms with interracial couples, specifically with two non-white leads as most of them are dramas, especially the ones that are based on true stories.
Back in the day, when a movie spent a fortune with a heavy cast, extravagant costumes and exotic locations, you could tell that very little was spent to make a decent script
That's why this genre eventually died out
I'm sad.....deep in my soul that The Idea of You wasn't included
Renewed succsess. Happy monday night, Kirsten, take care and God bless you. Greetings from Colombia to you as well

Rom-coms always suck imo they’re tasteless and stupid and pointless. They’re so boring too, and if you have to act in one you dread every second of it even if you have acting skills.
