Using a custom horizon in NINA!

  • In this video we look at using a custom horizon in NINA! I'll show you what I did to map my horizon 360deg, and create a file that N.I.N.A can read and use. A custom horizon allows you to better understand how your backyard surroundings (trees!) may affect the imaging of a particular deepsky object.

    It works great 👍 Actually did it 3 days ago. Using my guide scope and recorded altitude every 5 degrees from north to north. 🙂

    Pretty cool app. I like the photo capability, so I can take a photo of where the camera is looking, and it basically takes a screen shot. Furthermore, the information is saved for pitch and roll, as well as your location.
    If I ever get my stuff back together, physically and metaphorically, this will be a great idea for NINA. Of course, I also have a custom landscape for Stellarium, so I'll know at least where the objects in the sky are when I start imaging, and I can see if I need to move stuff around, or cut short my imaging session. But, I think this is great, too.

    Thanks Shawn. I had just watched another of your videos and was about to ask about the custom horizon but checked first and found this. Much appreciated. My horizon is pretty low mostly but there are a couple of points where trees block it a bit and now I have an observatory I have to take account of the walls of that too as they block everything under about 20 degrees - not that I’d image at such a low altitude but it good to see if maybe Jupiter or Saturn are high enough for a quick look. Thanks again.

    Hi, thanks for the video. It seems like the Horizon format and NINA advanced sequencer loop conditions themselves don't support the balcony scenario(having a roof above / maximum altitude obstruction) :(

    Great video, You can also use the same horizon file for Stellarium and CdC

    apps not working for me i know im pointing north and its showing south and wont turn even if i turn round

    tried it, calibrated my phone, used the app. When pointing south app says it's pointing at 140 degrees and in need of a calibration. When going to the calibration option in android it tells me it's calibration is very good.... now, do I believe android, or the app???

    Good info, thanks. However, I think I prefer Stellarium where you can input a 360 photo of your horizon. With a bit of tweaking it’s quite accurate for predicting when a target is visible.

      I also did this in Stellarium. But what I am missing there is an option to create a list of "my targets" so I can see which one will be visible at a given day. Does that work somehow?

    What is the app name? The link from the description does not work any more. Thanks for the tutorial - a great video!
    Edit: found the name, it was 'geocam free' app is not available in Android store anymore though :(

    Shawn did you find an IPhone app that does the same as geocam?

      GPS Maps-coordinates Finder also works and it's has a free option that will work for this. It very similar to the app used by Shawn in the video
