Mr. Trocha, thanks for the video. I have a young filly and am trying to decide which to start out on, the Hackamore or Snaffle Bit. And I like the idea of the Hackamore better. Can you recommend a Hackamore I should start with?

@thatschill777 It depends on the horse and what I need to do. If you look at my other video clip about training with a hackamore, you'll get a better idea of how I like them shaped and adjusted.

Hi Larry. I've been watching your Hackamore training videos and got myself one but My question is this. when starting a horse out on a hackamore, do you get better results if they are softer faced in a snaffle or can you get a softer and more giving face just as good using a hackamore?? I suppose what I'm trying to say is do you get better results in a hackamore if your horse is soft and light in a snaffle than you would if they are resistant to a snaffle bit??

Definition of a HACKAMORE: A noseband of braided rawhide or leather, measuring one-half inch or larger in diameter.
Definition of a BOSAL: A noseband of braided rawhide or leather, measuring LESS than one-half inch in diameter.
Definition of a MECHANICAL HACKAMORE: A noseband and curb chain attached to metal shanks for the purpose of additional leverage. (NOT the type of hackamore I'm talking about in this video)

I have a 3 year old being started pretty late and was wondering if I should use a bosal on her instead of a snaffle? She isn't very soft, in fact she's really bad with responding to ques and moving. Would is help her be softer in the mouth or have any other benefits?

Sophia Crepea what did you end up doing? I came here looking for the same info, and I heard him say: “some horses can’t stay in a nodal, but the ones that can are usually really nice and soft.” So if sounds to me like bosal is great for as long as you can get away with it, but depending on the horse you may need to graduate to a new bit in order to go out of the round pen. So I’m gonna try a jumping hackamore on my mare (an English style bosal). She’s unbroke, but has learned to yield to pressure nicely.

@@treethuggers1068 it depends how you start them and how you use the bosals. They work by bumping and not steady pressure. I've had some great success with bosals. But I know I could never get away with it with my one horse lol.

MysteriousRoads thanks for sharing!m, that’s interesting about bumping vs pulling. Question: if the bosal is bumping, then does it encourage neck reining?

@@treethuggers1068 good question! So when you teach neck reining in a snaffle you usually have a constant pressure on the inside rein, kicking with the outside leg, and laying the outside rein on the neck. With a bosal you bump with the inside rein but you still lay the outside rein on the horses neck. A bosal is a great tool for teaching neck reining! In a traditional bosal you will have a horse hair mecante, which is the reins. The horse hair is kinda scratchy and the vaqueros used it to help teach neck reining. I like my smooth reins tho lol.
