I was 12 when I put my hands on this game. For me (1993, I'm dominican, and at that time I didn't know a word of english back then, but always played NES games with an english-spanish dictionary in hand), it was extremely difficult at first. I couldn't find anything beyond the key holder and the hammer.
Everything changed one saturday afternoon, when I was bored and I hit a wall with the hammer, and a door appears out of nowhere (I can still remember the emotion I had back then).
Afterwards, it was only matter of follow the same pro-tip of the 4 steps when you are in an empty room (which I developed by myself backthen).
It is one of my beloved games of all times. I don't have the cartridge I had when I first played it (the chip was inside a different case, and I though it was another game... at that point I knew it was not the sequel to the movie), but I have another cartridge I bough years later dirt cheap.
That game helped me learn a little bit of english, giving me access to a whole new world.

However sprawling and detailed games may be these days, this is the kind of game that felt like a whole world back in 1987. Mysterious, magical - but with some familiar suburban American iconography. In a way, it's a precursor to games like Star Tropics and Earthbound.

Justin Runge so true. I played this before Zelda, Metroid or Kid Icarus and this was the first game that truly felt like I was exploring a huge mysterious world.

I vaguely remember reading an article somewhere that stated that the Mermaid element was in one of the early drafts of the goonies 2 movie script that was in production at the time, which Konami was informed about, in hopes of having a simultaneous release- but the movie ended up in production hell, and the game was released without it.

I was 11 years old when Goonies II released in my part of the world, and I absolutely loved this game! So did many of my friends and other classmates. It had platforming like Super Mario, it had adventure and mystery like Zelda, and it had exploration and the need to search for items like Metroid. This, when it was released, was the ultimate adventure game. Sure, it took forever to search all the rooms, hitting everything with the fist and hammer, but that kind of exploration was fun back in the day. At least to me, and everyone else that I knew who was hooked on it.

agreed. The gameplay really has to be understood in context. It combined elements of other great games into one single challenge. And as someone who tried to burn every bush in Zelda and bomb every floor square in Metroid, the "hit-hammer-goggles" process was standard gaming experience.

I played the hell out of that game when I was a kiddo and it was brand new. Though I was too young to understand how the game functioned, I still loved it. Went back and played it again for a few hours some years back, and its still hard as hell hahahha ;) Thank you for making this video... Ive spent a week anticipating it and I was so happy when it popped up in my subscriptions list!!!

It’s annoying to see people slam old games based on modern standards. Especially when modern games built on what was established in the very games they crap on. You have to compare old games to their peers at the time and what the standards were.

I don't know why folks would verbally put down a game like this one: Konami put a lot of effort into it, and it's genuinely fun to play. It's all too easy to complain about something after the fact without understanding the technical limitations that factored into its creation. People were neither less talented nor less intelligent 30 years ago!

The Goonies II is just the gang telling the events of the movie to the new kid in town, Dominic Palmieri, while they're baby sitting him and trying to get him to go to sleep. Hence all the crazy things like magma caverns, dragons, the mermaid, etc.

  • @hwogrillo

I remember dumping a ton of quarters into the original Goonies game in the arcade (the baby blue Vs. machine, not the play choice), but I never could quite get into this one. Now I'm gonna have Cindy Lauper stuck in my head for the rest of the day. Fantastic.

Even though "Goonies 2" is a sequel to "Goonies" on Famicom, Goonies on Famicom has the same story as the movie. So in essence, Goonies 2 IS a sequel to the movie's story as well.

  • @oobgarm1

I remember first seeing this on a PlayChoice machine. Never did try to tackle it thanks to the NES Player's Guide maps presenting it as a very daunting task. I love the first one on Famicom, so perhaps I'll try to go through this one only using the black guide as my only resource.

Borrowed this from a friend back in 7th or 8th grade, and beat it in (effectively) one sitting from a Saturday morning to that night, loving every minute of it. This was a great game that I occasionally come back to just out of how fun it is to play.

7:10 - When I was around 8 I beat this game. And so I drew this scene in a book. Thing is, I drew her with her boobs showing! About 20 years later I find this book again and saw the drawing, thus creating a false memory in my head that the boobs were always there. Honestly, I'm quite shocked! Here I was thinking this was an NES game with nudity in it for 25 years of my life in total.

Been hyped for this episode for awhile and it does not disappoint. Countless rentals of this title as a child have firmly cemented it in my memory and lead to years of confusion about the story. When the term Metroidvania started getting thrown around in the early 2000s I remember comparing the concept to The Goonies II and getting a lot of strange looks as a result.

This game holds a special place in my heart - I played it so much and memorized the map (thank you Nintendo Players' Guide, the holy grail of early NES gaming), I could beat the game in just under an hour. Looks like the current WR is ~15 minutes, which is really insane to me.

This is an underrated game that I've always enjoyed, despite its weird Adventure scenes. The connection between those and the map always eluded me back then, the Warp Zones, which can take you anywhere, messed me up and obscured the connections between th action and adventure scenes and the map.
My favorite thing about the game is that hilarious animated Ma Fratelli that shows up to taunt you in attract mode and when you lose!

While in retrospect I can understand why Konami didn't bring over the first Goonies game for the NES in North America, VS. Goonies, the arcade counterpart using the VS. System arcade line of games, did get a western release. So that's odd.
Ultra Games, Konami's shell corporation to circumvent the publishing limit Nintendo of America imposed, started up the following year after this game, so I'm wondering if Konami getting that free pass on publishing more than the limit in 1987 was making other publishers jealous or what. There's gotta be some story there.

No sequel Goonies unless they all have jetpacks.

Think of a remake now, where every Goonie has different stats and abilities, and boss fights.

As a big fan of the movie I always wanted to play this one, but I wanted to play the first Goonies first. Obviously I could never find it and information about Famicom-only releases was sparse back then so I never played it.

Did you have a cold while recording this, Jeremy? You sound a bit congested. 😅
Please get well soon if you are! ☺️
