  • Alexander Graham Bell did not consider the telephone to be his greatest invention. This video takes a look at this remarkable man and what he considered to be his greatest invention: the photophone.

Fantastic presentation!! I did not realize he invented the photocell!! That is amazing! Solid state electronics in the 1800s!
There are a couple of inventions I want to mention that Bell did that I think most people are not aware of:
Optical audio recording--he recorded sound in the 1880s (likely using photophone transmitters) optically on glass disks, with the recording spiraled similar to a record. Several of these optical recordings and other experimental disk recordings are on UA-cam.
Reel-to-reel tape recorder--no, not a magnetic tape recorder, but in the 1880s, he invented a recorder with wax-coated paper tape that went from one reel to another, and a needle would etch a groove of the sound for recording, and a needle would play back the groove along the tape, just like a phonograph.

That is AWESOME!!! I've never heard of this invention and, indeed, it's great. It could be considered one of the earliest system for transmitting data through light!

      Two things
No it couldnt be because that went to a failed experiement of trying to find how fast light travels
      But...
It could be the first non human transported message and wireless too

Even living on XXI century his inventions are extremely interesting and useful. Just having the materials and improving the audio quality it would work as an excellent emergency phone. Grettings from Venezuela and excellent videos!

Popular Electronics? Magazine had an article about this in the 70s. I modulated an ir led, used fiber from a fiber optic Christmas tree, and used a ir photodiode fed to a Radio Shack amp in 1976. I had lots of fun with thin mirrors from makeup compacts taped to balloons pulled tight over cans. Shine the light in the window to a solar cell amp. Sometimes it worked. 45 years later working with fiber optics in networking.

could have used a reflecting parabol-shaped mirror around the light detector or a lens. amazing experiment though! that bell made it work back in the days is indeed astonishing. thanks for bringing this invention to our attention!

its absolutely fantastic how bell and other scientists manage to see so many if frond of them with so poor technology and knowledge. Maybe my advice is: don't study only, imagine and have faith to your dreams.
