This book was SO good and so much fun, I was way more invested in the bugs too - and I was rooting for the spiders 😂 Not surprised at all that you enjoyed this one Jimmy, it seems like it’d be your speed
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I liked the first 2/3 and loved the last 1/3 of the book. I really connected with the ideas of generational memory and empathy. I didn’t think it was possible to be so engaged by spiders! I am actually starting a Tchaikovsky book this evening called Dogs of War. I hope I enjoy it just as much!
Children of Time is such a good book and a really interesting exploration of empathy! Tchaikovsky is a very solid author for me, and there's lots to dive into. Great review!
Great review - this one has been on the MBR for awhile. I read Tchaikovsky for the first time last month - The City of Last Chances, and definitely enjoyed it.
The books are amazing and at the time I was annoyed lie why am I redid this then they all lay off with the endings. I'll be reading a different book and find myself thinking of children of ruin
This has been on my TBR for ages... Thanks for the nudge to keep it on my radar, it does sound so interesting! Glad your second try with Tchaikovsky was a success! 😊
Great review. 🔥 Tchaikovsky nailed it with this book. Even thinking about spiders gives me the creeps, and just like you I was rooting for the spiders at some point. Soooo good!!
This is one of those true TBR veterans of mine and I have no clue why I haven't gotten to it already. Excellent review, I am bumping it up the priority list again!!
@@thefantasynuttwork I had to circle back to this review as I just finished reading this book while I was travelling/attending a bug conference. This book gave me so much joy ( and entertainment for my lab mates as I had to update them on the progression of the spider society as I read through it)
Great review! I went into this book largely blind, particularly had no idea about the spiders, and at first I thought they'd be a temporary part of the story. I kept thinking, "Hmmm... so when will he move on from this spider story?" and then about halfway through, I was like "OH, this IS the story!" Such a unique and thought provoking book.
I had decided not to read this one... then i read Guns of the Dawn and Children of Time went back on my list and your review confirmed this decision.🎉🎉
Great review! Interesting the sections with 2 sides of the page didn’t look that way on my kindle, but that sounds better. For what it’s worth I thought Ruin was a step down but he returned to brilliance with Memory. If you liked the ant battles you may enjoy Empire of the Ants by Bernard Werber.
Been meaning to read this book for a long time, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. It sounds like a cool twist to the first contact story. Great video as always man!
I read Guns of the Dawn and Cage of Souls last month and absolutely loved both though they couldn't be more different. Can't wait to read this one despite my arachnophobia lol. Glad you liked it!
Dude. This is such a good book. It was one of my favorite reads of 2022. I just finished Children of Ruin a couple days ago. It was fine, but i really didn't connect with any of the characters until the very end. The whole story is basically the same as CoT. I will read Children of Memory eventually but I'm not in a hurry.
One of my favorite overarching themes of this book (as someone who doesn't usually have the ability to even recognize themes, much less discuss them) was how he handled the religious aspects of forming a religion around this unseen "Messiah" figure. I thought it was really neat the way he presented it and handled that. Unfortunately i didnt care much at all for Children of Ruin, but i will continue sometime soon with Children of Memory. Glad you had such a great time reading this one!
I loved this book too. And that the end didn't go where i expected. Children of Ruin is on the giant TBR as is the Apt series . He seems to be an author with a LOT of ideas 📚⛰️
Great review! I'm getting more and more interested in Tchaikovsky's stuff the more I see it on book tube. I hope I can squeeze it in someday! Just glad you didn't mention hornets. Too many of those around my house, ha!
This is the year in witch I hope I can get more familiar with SF. I tried Octavia E. Butler's "Xenogenesis" also known as "Lilith's Brood", but I don't think I was ready fot it as a project, but I really loved her short stories from "Bloodchild and Other Stories" ( one of her 2 nonfiction Essays made me cry). Deffinetely considering both Tchaikovsky and Mieville. Next month I will try one of Ursula Le Guin's SF from the "Hanish Cycle". Happy reading to you!
What a coincidence, i was just wondering when your next review was gonna drop lol Lucky me not being afraid of bugs. Then again if I saw a spider the size of a small dog walking around I'm gonna assume it's poisonous, bolt and leave a me shaped hole in the wall. I'm really excited to get to Children of Time, i don't see it being anytime soon tho since I recently read Empire in Black and Gold (Book 1 of Shadows of the Apt) and can confirm, BUGS!!!
Lol so no one told me about the spiders before I read this book. Not a pleasant surprise.. 😂 but I was very impressed by the societal commentary in this book, think I ended up giving 4 stars.
A FILM adaptation!!! Movie screen size spiders!!! I’m still working on gathering the courage to even read the book but a movie?!? I’m pretty sure I have to nope out on that one. BTW - we are definitely an invading species. Bunnies had everything under control before we screwed it all up.
This book has been on my TBR for some time, gave the book away as a gift to someone and I doubt they'll ever read it haha but my real question to you Jimmy. Will this book help me get over my fear of spiders?
Gonna be honest I quit about halfway through when I realized that not only did I not know anything about the main character, but I couldn't even tell you his name. Spider stuff was cool
I rolled my eyes anytime I had to read chapter from human perspective. People were poorly written, spiders much better. I also didn't like the ending. I find the book overrated and same with Dogs of War whose cover promises deep existential and moral questions but in the end that aspect of the story was as shallow as a puddle. Seems to me like Tchaikovsky comes up with great ideas but doesn't have the talent to make them truly shine and instead drowns them in mediocre/slightly above average writing and characterization.
Omg thank you for doing a review on this. My coworker got me into SA way of kings. I blew through it and dot edgedancer and just finished mistborn... Long 3 months. And fuck I had finished time, memory, and ruin. Right before. It deserves the same fandom and it's half the time to read lol but fuck I'm forgot I read of time. Yo it made me literally garden to keep spiders alive
I may be the only person on earth who just couldn’t get into this book. I appreciate the overall concept but the characters just seemed flat with no personality except for Kern. And the spiders are just, well, spiders (but with religion). Stopped reading halfway through. I may be too dumb for this one🫠
@@homeacoustics101 nah you’re not dumb, I’ve had a good amount of people tell me they thought it wasn’t very good. Different strokes for different folks

I was also on the side of the spiders- lol
I loved this book. So,so many twists. I agree with your analysis.. will alter ones perspective on the misunderstood spider.

Another excellent review Jimmy. I was wondering where I should start with Tchaikovsky. I think you have answered that question for me. Thanks!!
Definitely a solid starting point!
Fantastic review Jimmy- Children of time was such a fast paced, unique and a wonderfully executed story to the start of the trilogy.
