- Today we are ranking ALL 50 US states from the worst states to the best states. Everyone has their favorite state and a state they aren't too keen on.
We did this video about 3 years ago and thought it was time for an update.
So, let's Rank EVERY State in the United States from WORST to BEST!
In order to determine how States are ranked, we look at a few categories including their economy, cost of living, crime rates, healthcare, schools, and overall reputation.
The United States of America is today's subject.

I hope you guys enjoy this video. Let me know which ones you feel got a raw deal.
I feel that Arizona and Michigan got some raw deals. They're both great places to live in.
California got a raw deal. It has major issues, but I don’t care. Even if some random state in the mid US has great stats, nothing beats the amazing culture, weather, nature(palm trees!), and activities that California has!🌴🌴🌴☀️☀️☀️
Arkansas should always be dead last lol great job
Hey for your stream I would like to know what you think about the region near the Appalachians in northeast TN/northwest NC/southwest VA. I went to ETSU for a year in 2018 and am thinking about moving to Johnson City or Knoxville when I get a chance.
@@jackscinema1706 California's similar to Florida in that there is more than one California. I liked the commenter who listed California as the best AND the worst (though it's far from the worst).

For the next time you "update" a list, it would be cool to see the rank changes. Not only show the new rank but also the old one. That would also allow viewers to see which states are improving a lot
also maybe show a map. im not from us and for most states got no idea where they are
From Washington, and I was pleasantly surprised to find it topped the list! I love it’s temperate climate and beautiful nature!
So do I.

I am a former WA resident, I can see it being number one also, and they deserve it it the jobs, economy, the people .My only issue with the state not enough sun,too gloomy, and rainy there.Unfortunately that will keep me from ever moving back there, other than that it's a great state to raise a family.
You know, I've lived in Michigan (#42) and Utah (#2), and they're not that different. My point is that if you're moving to anywhere in the US, it's not like a third-world country in one state and first-world in another state. The differences are slighter than people like to pretend.
Great comment
Actually know, the difference between places like in New England to the deep south is Amazing!
@@tnickknight the differences exist, but it’s not like Rwanda vs. Italy!
Go to WV then move to VA. You will change your mind quick.
@@jamesjeffries4408 I’ve been to WV and VA. WV wasn’t that bad. VA wasn’t that great. I’m sure the difference seems much more stark if you live there, but they’re not *that* different. Maybe it’s one of those things where you can’t truly understand it unless you’ve lived in many different conditions and different places, but poor is poor is poor is poor in WV or VA or MI or UT. Comfortable is comfortable wherever you are.
As someone who was born and raised in WA, I’m surprised it’s #1, it’s nice here but it isn’t that far off from being ridiculously expensive like California. It’s definitely a challenge for the younger adults to get something established on their own here. Also crime has been on the rise in certain areas. Not a bad list though.
WA has ranked #1 on numerous lists for many years. We've been looking at the state, but the price of homes has kept us away.
@@tabby3378 Unless you are a rich Dem loving liberal who enjoys skyrocketing crime rates and metastasizing homeless camps, you should stay away. Far far away.
Completely agree, I live in Washington too. Puget Sound area in Pierce & King County (where most people live) have become crime infested, overcrowded, and expensive. I would way rather live in multiple states listed in the 40's over Washington.
@@sunnyskytravel4571 most republicans states have very high crime rate and have high poverty rate
I moved from AZ to WA and the cost of living is not that much more. When you take into account state taxes, it is almost a wash. The quality of life is miles better.
I moved out of Washington State four years ago because Seattle has become overrun with lunatics on the city council and vagrants on the streets. The housing prices have become outrageous too. The oppressive clouds and constant rain are depressing as well.
Best: WA
Worst: WV
The rain never bothered me. In fact, I rather enjoyed it growing up there. I moved out of state in 2013 and since then Washington has been overtaken by sociopaths and lunatics. I would consider moving back (staying out of the greater Seattle area) if I could land a decent paying job, but then I would miss the (mostly) quiet nature of Alaska.
First off Washington is more than Seattle. And while Seattle has a host of big city blues, find me a West Coast or any American city that is at peace with itself. The problems of Seattle are national problems. Safe cities lie outside the USA, such as Singapore, Osaka, Helsinki. Of the 50 states, I still put WA on top and only left when my job ran out.
I live on the east side of the state. We have much less rain, homeless, and lunatics.
@@hikingwithsquirrel - Seattle's problems are caused by the crazy leftists on the city council. Same with Portland and San Fransisco.
I've lived in several states now, and their rankings are honestly not surprising. I lived the longest time in New Mexico, but I'm living in Utah currently. The differences are absolutely shocking. Let's just say I'm starting my own family in Utah for many reasons, even though some of my family and friends are still in New Mexico...
Kinda impressed my home state of Wisconsin was ranked so high, but you really hit the nail on the head with the state not having any major downfalls. The towns along the Michigan coast (minus admittedly Milwaukee) are an awesome place to move to right now, and the Mississippi River area has always been great.

Listening to this in early 2022, as a lifelong washingtonian, I greatly value the statistics and reports on your channel. That being said, the only other states I could ever imagine moving to thanks to your channel are maine, but also Montana or idaho. As someone who absolutely adores the chilliness and the temperamental but beautiful change in seasons, the Pacific northwest, even the lesser known treasure of Eastern Washington certainly have more than their market share of natural beauty combined with decent infrastructure, good history, and a generally friendly and welcoming population! I've been to many other states but I've never found one that is truly as all around satisfying as Washington. Thank you so much for all of your wonderful work, it is much appreciated!
Not to mention the delicious wines of Washington state!

As an "over the road" trucker, covering every state but Alaska and Hawaii, I've seen some truly remarkable and amazing things.
From the Atlantic to the Pacific, from the Great Lakes to the Mexican border and just about everything in between.
I don't think a lot of Americans realize just how expansive, grand and beautiful this country really is.
From the laid back, cool beaches to the majesty of the mountains. From the natural beauty of forests to the calmness of waterfalls, rivers, lakes and streams.
Personally, in my opinion,
driving Route 12 from Mt Saint Helen's to Yakima Washington, is the most beautiful place I've ever seen in America.

As a Missourian who now lives in Illinois, I concur with your assessment of both states.
Enjoyed this one quite a bit. In numerous videos you talk about how one or two cities can pull a whole state down. Would you please do a video about how, in the same state, two cities can be at opposite ends of the suckage scale? In this one you mentioned Grand Rapids and Detroit, but I am sure there are plenty others.
Port Huron is a beautiful city. Downside is there isnt much to do there unless you wanna go to Canada
@@thomasvlaskampiii6850 Going to Canada does not sound too bad to me. I can visit neighboring states, but that really isn’t a big deal as the differences I encounter seem to be only sales tax rates. A change of pace, even if it was just going to some place like Tim Horton’s, would be a welcome change.
Im 100 like lol
I'm Canadian and I have heard a lot of negatives this past few years about Grand Rapids and how it's sliding downhill. I've never been there but was just surprised to hear it being a positive here after so many down comments from other sources. Oh well.
The large cities also support the rural areas financially though.
As a North Carolinian, I agree. The state is always near the top 10, but never quite in it. Although, this may change in the years to come, as more people are moving in, and the metros still have yet to branch out.
As a fellow North Carolinian, my biggest complaint has been the incessant rain and cloudy skies during the winter for the last two decades. Thankfully, except for this winter.
I don’t want the metros to branch out. Do you mean like spread and sprawl and turn into Denver?

Lived in WA State all my life. The various diverse geographical regions in the state are amazing. How can an area have so many different regions. Rain forest to desert grassland, high mountain Cascades, grazing ranges, stunning river valleys, beautiful lakes, ocean beaches, scablands, rich farm land, thick forests, flat rolling wheat fields, Puget sound and quiet ocean islands. The mountains in North Central WA remind me of the Alps but far more rugged and remote. Pretty amazing. The only place in the state I've never visited is the Northeast part of the State. I hear it is very pretty.
Lived in WA for a long time but it is in a political sprint to become the next California.
Utah has great statistics but after living here for a few years I can tell you that living along the Wasatch Front Range takes a massive toll on your health due to the horrible air quality during many parts of the year. I will be leaving in a few years because of this horrible issue that lowers quality of life here tremendously. Clean air is underrated.
If you love Utah but don’t want to live in the smaller places, then maybe consider moving south to Cedar City or if you don’t mind the heat St. George. They’re not as big when compared to the Wasatch Front, but they have a lot of opportunities for anyone moving there and you can still go skiing and hiking.
@@samlanierusa I absolutely love St. George
I live in Central California, the air quality is some of the worst in the nation, I think Utah’s air quality isn’t that bad
@@AiVersify it’s not consistently bad but when the inversion occurs we sometimes have the worst in the entire world for a few days to a week at a time. It’s due to our unique geography of our cities that are in valleys.

Hey Briggs! I was wondering if you could do a list of the best states for people with disabilities.
I am a paraplegic & I think it would be useful information.
Amazing video as always!
interesting idea i like it
Blue states have traditionally been more supportive of public spending on social services. Red states are traditionally less likely to support spending on social services. When Trump mocked a disabled NY Times reporter in public, no Republican Governors or Republican member of congress spoke out against his behavior. That should be a good indicator for you.
Yes, great idea. Federal Law, specifically the Americans with Disabilities Act, is something you should become very familiar with. It is designed to protect the civil rights & opportunities of all people regardless of physical, mental/emotional, or cognitive disability. The requirements of this law for this protected class is the removal of all barriers and/or use of certain accommodations to make equal access to public buildings, schools, government, transportation, highway rest stops, public transportation, employment practices whereby an applicant can disclose the presence of a disability that would require a reasonable accommodation - meaning they could successfully perform a job with reasonable changes in the way things are usually done, as long as it is economically feasible and would not present undue burdens on others. Familiarize yourself with this law as it is Federal and must be respected in all 50 states. The Fair Housing Act may also be helpful. But, a list of progressive states who have implemented all aspects of the ADA - demonstrate knowledge of it's purpose (equal access, inclusion) would be ranked higher than others who may still be dragging their feet or have faced the most ADA violation lawsuits - these are discrimination cases. Advocacy groups are important too as are employment & housing support, rules & regulations. In other words, which states offer the most services, accessibility, inclusion, knowledge & expertise in becoming ADA compliant.
Agree with the general statement of Blue States being more aware & compliant with, what was considered, progressive legislation. The ADA was signed into law by President Clinton.
Took a road trip from Salt Lake to Louisiana a few months back, passing through New Mexico and Texas en route. Totally agree with New Mexico’s ranking on this list, but never could quite understand why Louisiana gets such a bad rap. Maybe it’s because we only went as far as Beaux Bridge? In any case, the area we visited was amazingly beautiful, all the people we met were friendly and welcoming, and the food… Well, I can tell you, if the local cuisine was included in your assessment, Louisiana would shoot up into at least the top 20!
You clearly didn’t visit Louisana in the middle of July. Otherwise you wouldn’t be saying that.
The Louisiana slander is crazy and it’s boring if you live here
And it’s so hard to do anything most of the year because it peaks over 100 degrees often
I was extremely happy when I saw Massachusetts at #7, that's where I'm from, it's a great and beautiful state overall. Great education and many entertainment all around.
Funny observation: Briggs talks about Maine being cold, while the video shows a building displaying the temperature: 85 F.
Climate change!!!
Maine can actually be hot during summer
@@thomasgrabkowski8283 Yeah, it seems like it's only the area from the Pacific coast about 10 miles inland that has truly cool summers (and downright cold ones in the case of San Francisco).
@@thomasgrabkowski8283 yes it can get wicked hot 🔥.
I feel like this was generally a good video but several times throughout you mentioned a state being cold but not the average winter temperature. Also, while it seems like more people prefer hotter temperature to colder ones, there is a portion of the population who would prefer the cold. So I feel like if and when you update this video you should give a more well rounded view of temperatures in the hottest and coldest states or not mention it at all.
Some Jerk, is keeping me from posting, so I can't answer your question. You'll have to look elsewhere, for your answer, and I'll try to post, elsewhere. I intend to file a complaint, as well.

He didn't want to move to Utah because a lot of the state is different. The thing he doesn't mention is that if you live in the Northern half it is mostly cities. If you live in the southern half it is a lot of desert. Also if you live in the north it is Cold/winter from November to February. If you live in Southern Utah it is warm or hot most of the year.
Us Whites can tolerate the cold. Move to a colder state to get away from diversity. Well, except maybe Asians.

Great list Briggs! I can’t be land locked. I was for years and I felt trapped. The ocean soothes my soul. I think states that border the ocean should be ranked a little extra for quality of life. 🌊
I am the same way. All your problems wash away in the ocean
You get use it when you live in an Illinois corn field maze for 24 years.
That is ridiculous. Michigan has more coastline than New York. What you speak of is your own mental deficiencies and biases. How about this? More people DIE OF DROWNING in those places. How is that for "quality of life"?
Liking or disliking an ocean is far more subjective opinion than inputting crime rates and taxes.
I am the same way. I grew up in wa then had to move to nm (I was 15 and didn't have a choice). Been stuck here for waaayy too long. Very ready to move back home to the ocean. Its amazing the difference in the quality of life.

As a native Iowan, I can confirm that we do have what might be called a boredom problem. We don't really have any attractions in this state. But it's so reasonably priced. Our population in constantly sort of equaling out because many youths from Iowa move to the coasts for more vibrant lives, while at the same time tons replace them in opposite moves, because it's so cheap to live here, and we have good schools and decent cities.
as an Iowan myself I can 100% agree with the boredom issue and everything is reasonably priced.
You're not going to have good schools much longer. I did my practicum for teaching with DMPS and it was a bit of a mess thanks to school choice. AFAIK, Kim Reynolds recognized the problem Iowa has with children's mental health and signed a bill but never actually appropriated funding (and remember that teenager that was allowed to starve to death in West Des Moines despite multiple calls to DHS? yeah). I've since moved to Arizona where I noticed it seems like there's a school on every corner--mostly charter schools in this very pro-school choice state. and guess how AZ ranks for education? I hope my home reverses course but it seems unlikely with the state so bright red.

I lived in very rural Ky.....The problem is many of these sheltered rural folks that inherited their parents home, who got it from their...etc... Many of these sheltered rural folks have never left their state! They are living in the past, xenophobic, scared of progress, urban life etc.... When I lived in rural Ky? I met folks that have never been to a town bigger than Lexington. Im not saying all rural folks have never left their state but....you would be surprised how many rural murikans are what Im talking about ...And rural wis, Minn and S.Ill are no different ! So not just slamming the south.......Sad but true....generations of white rural folks that have been around for a long time.. 4+ generations of the same family......and if you look at most rural homes after so long? @@misszombiesue Yeah, it's really gone downhill in that department. But just remember that Iowa is not strictly a red state. As someone who’s lived in Utah for many years, I agree with the ranking. Opportunities are abundant, education is great, cost of living is going up but still better than other places, especially if you live outside of the Salt Lake valley it’s not too bad and if you’re an outdoorsy person there’s lots to do here. I’ve also lived in California and I also agree with the comment about it being the best and also the worst state to live in.
I liked the vibe.
Utah is expensive. idk why people say it is pretty affordable/cheap? Heck, Nevada is cheaper than Utah for whatever reasons?
For being a republican state, UT is expensive.
This is kind of a silly premise: we typically live in cities and only venture outside on weekend trips or vacations. So the average quality of the state doesn't matter much.
Mississippi doesn't really have that much of a city, that's why it should be 50
Average Urbanite
Except of course the majority of every state that doesn’t live in the city 😅😅
we do? I work outdoors every day. I've never even been in a true city in my life.
I'm not dissing life outside the suburbs as much as saying that the average of a state like California, Texas, New York etc isn't really relevant. Comparing the top 50 major metropolitan areas would be more relevant. Comparing the top 1000 cities/towns would be less relevant. So uh, chill out people.
I've lived in Northern Virginia for my entire life, and I've never thought of leaving. It's got everything, from beautiful scenery, to great education, to great opportunity.

Numbers alone should bring Massachusetts into the top 5. Plus we have some of the best colleges in the world. Only downfall is that infrastructure is incredibly bad, like you mentioned. That and the traffic during rush hour, along with driving in general.
If we invested into more public transportation, that could be less of a problem! 🤓

Massachusetts - ranked #1 for education and health care. Where are you getting your numbers?
And 42nd for infrastructure - how do you get THAT?
One thing about people moving to West Virginia - I think that influx is largely in the eastern panhandle around Harpers Ferry.
It’s close enough to DC, so it’s got the edge of exurban expansion. It’s only an hour from Harpers ferry to Dulles international. If you have have to fly a lot for work, but you can work remotely and want country living - that eastern end of WV works out well for some folks.
Also, MARC has a line that runs into Union Station
I hope they're conservatives fleeing infested areas rather than the other way around. Virginia has been destroyed by Washington DC commies.
Makes sense, Harpers Ferry is a lovely town!

No longer living in Utah, but I'm born and raised there. Housing went uo rapidly within the past 5 years due to being one of the fastest growing states. Houses used to be pretty affordable but not anymore.
Thanks for ranking our beautiful state first

Mississippi: I SEE THIS AS AN ABSOLUTE WIN.
I think on top of metrics, it’s helpful to hear people’s personal experiences with the state and the natural beauty. And also consider that no place is 100 percent good or bad.
Great video, love the work you put into it. Some constructive criticism though, you’re very inconsistent about saying a state ranks higher or lower when it ranks better or worse. For example, sometime you’ll say a state ranks higher on this list, meaning it’s closer to the number one slot, but you’ll refer to a different states as being higher on the list meaning it has a bigger number and is thus further from the number one spot. It takes some extra thought to figure out what you mean. But like I said, great video! Just wanted to see the next one be even better!
I'm so sorry you're going through this 😔

Being a 20 something in Western Washington right now, there are SO many of us still living at home because everything is FAR too expensive especially housing. Groceries are also getting stupid pricey and gas is awful. Healthcare is phenomenal, almost every town you are in has a hospital and doctors offices everywhere as well as a great staff. Education is really amazing(if you can afford it and avoid astronomical debt). The crime is not great, getting worse especially in the big cities. But the thing that I would not trade for the world is the climate. 2hrs from the ocean, 1 hr from the mountains, 3 hrs from warm “dessert”ish Eastern Washington. With all that said, you also should keep in mind to avoid Washington (specifically western) if you suffer from seasonal depression. The rain, gloomy, overcast and cold will get you down 70% of the year. BUT it will make you completely appreciate and take advantage of the warm sunny days.

@@Alec_RTR just a couple felony possession with the attempt to distribute. Don’t get me wrong I was was working good jobs down Florida, but when it came to finding an apartment to live in it was damn near impossible. But back in Md. i work a a regular Warehouse job, I have a life I can go and do things if I wanted to. It’s just cheaper to live where I’m at. I love Florida, there’s lots and cons to both states.
What most people don't know about WA: it has a little bit of everything for any kind of person.
@@AuroraBoarder1 my favourite part is the 💩 in the streets 🥰
But it is too cold, no?
I would move to any other state if it had New York's public transportation
ok Briggs, you know I gotta do it... you need to redact Idaho from these lists now that we're in the top 10, too many people are gonna want to move here. :)
