Extras is about someone whos only ever focused on the next thing to do or next job. The song is when they slow down and can enjoy all the little EXTRA bits and pieces of life. Like hobbys.
Rub-a-Dub-a-Dub in the chorus is just that, theres no real meaning to the line itself, it doesnt need one, its just another little extra of life that the song is telling you to slow down and enjoy

Asuka R # is the Gear maker himself, responsible for much of the chaos despite his good intentions to stop said chaos. He's responsible for Sol Badguy becoming a Gear and Sol's love becoming the mad gear Justice, but was trying to stop the real threat.
Johnny is the gentleman outlaw who founded the do-gooder Jellyfish Pirates, an all-female of Sky Pirates he treats like daughters and sisters.
Elphlet is a gear that turned out to be a sleeper agent that they managed to save, as she now lives with Ky, Disney, and Sin as relatives of their royal family.

Haven't seen anyone mention this specific yet, but the lore about Johnny being the captain of the jellyfish pirates and May being a member has a funny extra part. May is emphatically in love with Johnny and one of her primary goals throughout the series is to get Johnny to see her in a romantic light. Johnny on the other hand sees May as his adoptive daughter and is extremely evasive and uncomfortable about May's various advances towards him. Essentially, May likes Johnny but Johnny refuses to see May in the same way. In the words of another youtuber I like, "Totsugeki that B*tch!"

Asuka is Sol Badguy's oldest friend and the one who turned him into a Gear, but while he always had the best intentions, he caused a ton of pain for Sol and Aria who were both his closest friends. From his perspective, it was the 'right' thing to do because he knew things they didn't: But as he points out in the song, just because it was the right/true thing to do doesn't mean it was the only way or perspective, and Sol's pain and anger at him is just as justified. That's why there's so many references to the Sun (Sol) and 'beyond it all, do you recognize me': he's asking if his best friend can see him for who he really is after all their conflict and whether it's possible for him to earn love and forgiveness now that he understands how misguided he was.

if im remembering correctly the reson the music for Elphelt had death metal in it was because in the lore I believe she was married or at least was in a relationship with a death metal band head.
She was almost married to him - her Valentine sleeper programming basically got activated *on her wedding day* and she left him at the altar, albeit not by choice. It's partially why she's so fixated on marriage.
But yeah, Elphelt has always been heavily involved in the death metal scene, and since the events of Xrd has gone on to be something of a death metal idol, I think? Girl just really loves heavy music.

Let me try to talk about the themes of the song Gravity with off hand knowledge of the lore.
Asuka: To preface imagine a reality where things like gravity exists as an interactable concept. You cant exactly turn gravity off but say set that value of gravity one less. Asuka a scientist at the time was one of the few who pioneered a science that MADE magic a reality, bio weapons called gears (the title of the game), and was partially responsible for every major event that happens in the games since 1998. His choice may have been for the "best" outcome but it resulted in alot of deaths, the death of his best friend's lover and turning said friend into a bio weapon, The main character SOL BADGUY. This song is about Asuka's comeuppence, redemption, and most of all his prayer for the "impossible" freedom from the title of the great antagonist. His themes play on the pop culture depiction of a book of reality where every aspect of reality is written as a law in the book.

I'm not gonna go too much into detail with Asuka because he's probably got the most complex story in the series lol, but long story short he led the Gear Project alongside Fredrick and Aria, he turned Fredrick into Sol and then later Aria into Justice, and his actions, as well intentioned as they were, led to global catastrophe that set humanity back more than a century. It's really fitting that he should have one of the longest, heaviest songs in the whole series. It's also pretty amazing that it took him this long to become playable. "Sun" is a common lyric in these songs, and I believe it often refers to Sol Badguy, since his name literally means Sun in Spanish. The lyric "As the universe turns black, did the sun ever defy fate?" references Sols determination and borderline invincibility when it comes to resisting attempts to completely end the world. His whole character is about learning to love again and then fighting with all he has for those he loves. Following up that lyric with "beyond all, do you recognize me?", is Asuka talking directly to Sol. I know it's been so long, I know the world is so different now, but can you still recognize me as your collegue from a hundred years ago? It gives me chills.
Johnny's a show off. But he's also a real stand up guy. He was orphaned when he was around 10, but he managed to pull himself up and stand on his own, but his realization that not everyone could do that led him to creat the Jellyfish Pirates, a group that takes in young orphan girls and gives them basically a found family. He sees his crewmates as his daughters and he'd do anything to protect them, this man has no limits. I love his song cuz it's written like a folk tale that you'd hear in a bar, speaking of the most legendary man you could ever meet. It's awesome.
Elphelts theme gives me chills too. Her and Ramlethal are sisters, and they're both Valentines, artificial beings created by The Universal Will (aka Ariels) to aid in her plan of annihilating all life in the universe. Elphelts true role in Ariels' plan was concealed from her until it was complete, but even so she rebelled and refused to be an accomplice to this, so Ariels took her by force and tried to fuse her to Justice to gain access to Justices powers. That's when Asuka created Jack-O, and then Sol and gang used her to basically plug up Justice so she couldn't be fused with, and also brought back the soul of Aria in the process! Elphelt was saved and reunited with her sister, and from there they both began living with Ky's family and got jobs in the government, but Elphelt couldn't keep up with all the work which made her feel guilty. She ran away while looking for her true calling, which she discovered was bringing smiles to people's faces with death metal music! She's got a band now called Speothos Venaticus (which btw is the scientific name for Bush dogs lol, also I'm proud of myself for being able to spell that without looking it up lmao). Her theme is canonically meant to be one of her songs, and man it's one of my favorites in the whole game. It repurposes a motif that was used in her Xrd theme called Marionette, which was a much darker sounding song. You can most clearly hear the motif at the very end of Extras, and hearing it used in such a bright and happy way gave me serious chills the first time I heard it. The journey of the Valentines in Guilty Gear is such a saga, but with Elphelts resolution in Strive it seems to have finally concluded. I love her ❤️ the idea of such an uplifting death metal song is honestly genius.

Asuka R Kreutz has created the Gears, and the Asuka in Strive is nearly an exact copy.
Johnny is the leader of the Jelly Fish pirates, they are all women and he sees them as his daughters. May is one of the "jelly Fish Pirate" and her theme is about him, and her love for Johnny.
Elphelt was created to destroy humanity but choose love instead, she is in an eternal quest to find her "perfect husband"
She will be forever looking. Perfect husband doesn't exist 😝😇 Only perfect wife 🥰

Forgot to mention,Elphelt did have a "husband" for a short period before Aria kidnapped her in the events of sign/revelator. He was the one who got her into the death metal stuff
Unfortunately there's no recordings of his wearabouts when Aria attacked,so unfortunately it can be assumed he was killed so her joining a band and becoming a metal singer can be a sign of her grieving or trying to remember him and keep doing the two things he taught her: love,and metal

His song is one that for musicians you can spend the entire day analyzing and finding more stuff to be in awe about. For others it might be a bit too much going on, definitely not for everyone😅

You ask if *Asuka* is a scientific priest? Kinda, in a way.
Asuka is a man from the 21st century, who was a diciple of "The Original" aka the gifted genius philosopher who discovered magic and spread it across the world, saving humanity from an energy crisis.
After "The Original" was presumed to have died-wandering too deeply into the magic realm he discovered- Asuka tried to continue his work with his own kinda methods.
Ultimately, Asuka ended up being the man who created the living weapons called Gears, who then rebelled and started a century long war with humanity.
Using his magic, Asuka has kept himself alive for all those years and watched the events unfold, becoming a legendary feared figure to humankind, being only known as "That Man" or sometimes "the devil".
So yeah, for most of the series, he's considered the main antagonist 🤔
*Johnny* is a pretty fun (?) character.
You can pretty much gather a lot of his energy and attitude from the theme alone, but for some additional info, he is basically the captain of a notorious gang of air pirates.
Aside from using illegal Black Tech (aka non-magical tech) for their ships, they're also know for stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, Robin Hood style.
Also, aside from Johnny, every single member of his pirate gang is female, as an almost unspoken rule. (May from the playable roster is actually one of his crew.)
Because of this, and his flirtateous nature, Johnny has a reputation of a sleazy womanizer, and you'd think he'd be keeping an all girl crew in order to keep all the ladies for himself, so to speak.
However, in reality, Johnny's crew members are pretty much all girls who lost their families in the war and were taken in by Johnny- to him they're all his family.
So Johnny actually has that rather wholesome core to him.
In the manuals of the older games, it is revealed that Johnny himself is in fact a war orphan, having lost his father to a Gear attack when he was a child- and now as an adult, he tries to be a great and beloved man just like his dad was.
*Elphelt* is "a" "Valentine", a very specific type of artificial human, who was created by a non-human entity as part of its plan to destroy humanity.
One aspect of this was that Elphelt was "programmed" to seduce and marry a death metal singer to infiltrate human society- but then through an epiphany she comes to feel real emotions and decides to fight for humankind instead.
Because of her initial programming, she is fascinated with the concept of love and marriage, being made to know it conceptionally but not intended to feel it truly; and she's had a habit of asking any adult man she meets to become her husband.
Overall, getting to spend life like an actual person would allows her to explore who she truly wants to be.
By the time of Strive, she feels insecure about not being able to do much to help her adopted family, and ends up running away from home to become a death metal singer herself, using her music to express herself and help people out in her own way, by being an inspiration to them.
That’s cool about Johnny. More than meets the eye. Glad he wasn’t a sleezeball like that 🙂😀

About the guy in the first song. He's basically half to blame for everything bad that happens in Guilty Gear. All he actually wants to do is start a podcast broadcasted from the moon.
edit: to explain a bit about Elphelt. Before this game, her thing was mostly about that she was created to be a hidden weapon basically. Her secondary thing as a disguise was that she wanted to get married (she genuinely wants that, but it's part of the created personality). So, after her major part was over in the story, she started a band where the mix of scream and regular singing is there to symbolize the conflicting reasons for her existence. She even helps a certain keyblade wielder with romance.

In context Elphelt being a crazy love nut death metal vocalist is kind of sad. Being a sleeper agent she had a death metal husband but when she was activated, she forgot him, so it feels like she's trying to fill a void she doesn't know she has.

In a way Asuka's theme The Gravity embodies the very core of Guilty Gear-What is gravity? One of the fundamental forces of reality which is unseen yet affects all things, even time. What is Asuka? an unseen force who has affected everything, even time. The lyrics embody how no one knew the Gearmaker. What everyone(the player included) accepted as truth from the very first game to the latest was a lie. The harsh truth is that the evilest man in history was delaying a hopeless future as best he could all along. This song is the series' payoff after 26 years of building up the mystery of Asuka, formerly known as That Man/The Devil🤯
Hearing about meaning behind Gravity makes us appreciate it more for its significance to the series 🤩
Asukas these is one of those ones where you kinda have to sit there and analyze it for the lyrics but the actual instrumental is extremely good. Johnny is “I am cool” and Elphelt is like adorable but can kill you

The best way to understand Asuka is to learn about what happened to Japan.
While Asuka and his team were field testing the Command Gear Justice, something happened to Japan. Something pushed its way into our reality, changing by its very presence most people living in Japan into human bombs. They were alive, but were no longer human and lacked free will.
Asuka ordered his team to use Justice to nuke the whole island of Japan to stop the invasion. When his team froze by the sheer horror of what they had to do, he apologised for putting this burden on their shoulders....and then personally ordered Justice to nuke millions of changes people off the face of the earth. His order would be his burden alone.
In this moment he became That Man, the main (supposed) antagonist of the series. A lot of his actions were destructive, but necessary in hindsight.
After the invading being, the Universal Will, was defeated he gave himself to the authorities for his crimes.

Fun fact: During Extras when it goes “I’m scared of the laughter but” is sung to the tune of Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ because Elphelt’s birthday is 12/25.

TLDR Lore here:
Asuka: The student of Happy Chaos, Creator of The First Gears for example; Sol Badguy, the one the people in the story called That Man, currently living in space while creating a radio show for people to hear, and also the one who nuked Japan into oblivion.
Johnny: Sky pirate, Foster dad to the orphans in his pirate crew, master swordsman and gambler, the luckiest man alive basically Domino from X-Men, and the famous women respector.
Elphelt: Full name; Elphelt Valentine, sister to Ramlethal cause they both were born and created by the same person, Currently a Pop Rockstar. And as bonus, she is related to Jack-O due to Sol & Jack-O cause Sol's wife's (Aria) soul is in Jack-O making them partners and, because Elphelt & Ram were created from the fragment of Aria's thus making the two of them sisters toward Sol and Jack-O. Also related to Ky and Sin because Dizzy (Ky's wife & Sin's mom) is a Valentine. I know it is complicated but, as a note any person with a Valentine in the name, they are related to Sol Badguy, because they are created using the soul of his wife. So that means, Elphelt & Ram are Sol's sister in-law, while Dizzy is Sol's alleged daughter.
Dizzy is not a Valentine. The only valentines are the original valentine (dead), Ramlethal, Elphelt, Jack'O and the unfinished 2nd Valentine made for I-No (named Happy Chaos). Dizzy is Sol's daughter with Aria (presumably she was pregnant when she was transformed into Justice).
Additionally, Elphelt and Ramlethal are more like Sol's Daughters. Ramlethal refers to Sol as father in both Xrd and Strive, and their relationship with Sol is parental in the Xrd storymode.
Also, Elphelt isn't a 'Pop Rockstar', she's in a metal band.

Also, Johnny never learnt proper swordfighting techniques and he relies very heavily on his luck even in fighting. Some examples include smooth cutting a arc by sheathing his sword behind his back by throwing it and catching it in a reverse grip. He is incredibly lucky to not lose a finger every time he does it. This is in his animations, btw.

So, EVO is happening this weekend and Season 4 announced a few months ago, we're going to see who will be the first DLC for the new Season. If anything you should pay attention for the music track they will use when the announcement happens.
Asuka was the main antagonist for the Guilty Gear series, he was the one that helped make the Gears and was Sol's friend.
Johnny is the captain of the Jellyfish Air Pirates and subject of May's crush. Unfortunately for May he sees her as a little sister.
Elphelt is Ramlethal's sister but she wants to find someone to marry. She's not picky and will hit on the roster when you use her taunt/respect.

I suggest listening to "Midnight Carnival" "Blue Water, Blue Sky" and "A Simple Life" I-No's, May's and Bridget's themes respectively. I would recommend "Awe of She"but Dizzy isn't in the game as DLC...yet.

Since a lot of people have mentioned Asuka's lore in the story, I'll give a fun fact about him ingame wise. While he has been a character since the very first Guilty Gear game, depicted as the main antagonist, he has *never* been playable until he was announced as the final DLC character for Season 2 of Strive, and even then it's technically a copy of the real Asuka.
Must’ve been a lot of fun for fan base to finally get to play as him 😀

Asuka is essentially the main villain of the Guilty Gear franchise BUT it is only until Guilty Gear Strive that it is discovered that all his actions were supposed to help the world and stop the true enemy, but his plans went awry after being manipulated by the over-arching true evil - "The Greater Will".
Asuka was the original creator of Gears - artificial, sentient lifeforms that ended up going to war with humanity for 100 years, and brought it to the brink of extinction, the irony being they were originally intended to serve as an advancement of Humanity. His research into the alternate dimension known as "The Backyard" had gifted him with almost-enlightened knowledge, but at a hidden cost - catching the attention of "the Greater Will".

Asuka is probably the character in Guilty Gear with one of the saddest stories. He was one of the creators of the Gear Project alongside Frederick (Sol Badguy) and Aria (Jack-O' Valentine), and eventually created Commander Gear JUSTICE, which he would essentially fuse the terminally-ill Aria into to try and extend her lifespan so her and Frederick could live longer together. This backfires and an ancient artificial god called the Universal Will possesses JUSTICE with Aria still inside, turning all Gears (except for Sol, as he is also a Commander Gear) into homicidal servants. Asuka desperately tries to fix this problem but realizes that JUSTICE is too strong and will destroy the whole world if left alone, and so, as JUSTICE was attacking Japan, Asuka has a colossal gamma ray fired at the country which quite literally ANNIHILATES Japan from the face of the world. JUSTICE survives and Asuka is branded a terrorist, earning the nicknames "Gearmaker" and "The Devil". He flees to an old colony on the moon to use as his base while he desperately searches for ways to remove hostile Gears from the world - the book he has with him is the Tome of Origin, which holds almost all the knowledge about the world and the Backyard (the alternate reality where metaphysical things like emotions and fears become physical and where magic comes from). By the end of the story, Asuka turns himself in to the US government in order to be at the G4 summit so he can seal the Tome of Origin away and ensure it is never used again, after JUSTICE and hence the Universal Will was destroyed in Guilty Gear Xrd. This leads to I-No and Happy Chaos (the latter of whom is revealed to be The Original, the founder of magic and Asuka's teacher, gone insane after stealing half of I-No's power) storm the White House to take the Tome and give I-No her powers back. Eventually, I-No is killed and Chaos is removed, and Asuka follows through with his original plan and removes the Gear cells from Sol Badguy, returning him to a human. He now lives on the moon, and runs a podcast where he tells people what's going on in the world.
Johnny is the leader of a nomad group known as the Jellyfish Pirates. The main twelve members (except for himself) are named after the month they were recruited, which, coincidentally, are the twelve months of the year (including the anchor-swinging May!). The Pirates fly on floating airships that Johnny stole years before, and are more akin to Robin Hood and his Merry Men than actual pirates. Johnny loves caring for the pirates like they're his actual daughters (which is weird, since May is in love with him) but he has a certain turn-on for motherly figures, since he subscribes to a magazine called 'Dynamic Housewives' repeatedly. Despite this, Johnny is not a misogynist or sexist; quite the opposite. He heavily respects women and tries to both compliment and flatter any female character he fights, with genuine respect for them being so brave to fight a man that literally is so lucky he has yet to fail. Also, his fighting style has him throw out sharp playing cards and then cut them in an instant with his cane-sword, causing the card to split out and shoot in opposing directions. He also fights with firebottles, roses, and his general flashiness, and isn't afraid to play dirty, since, in his own words, his opponent does well, but he's just a little better.
Elphelt, much like Asuka, is a sad story. She is the youngest child of the Universal Will, making her a Valentine (a Gear-like entity made directly by the Universal Will asexually). While her older sister Ramlethal waged war on humanity, she was a sleeper agent that went straight to Illyria (the megacontinent that Ky Kiske, Leo Whitefang, and Daryl rule over) and offered to help the good guys fight Ramlethal, claiming to 'not be like her sister'. This was a trap, of course, and Elphelt's bubbly personality is destroyed when her mother, the Universal Will, activates her sleeper agent protocol, in which she almost destroys Illyria from within. She's stopped, but kidnapped by her mother, who has been under the guise of the Sanctus Maximus Populi, Ariels (essentially the Giga-Pope). The UW's plan was to fuse Elphelt with the restrained body of JUSTICE, who had been imprisoned since her defeat, to create an unstoppable being that the UW could control and annihilate humanity with. This plan eventually fails and Ramlethal and Elphelt rebel against their mother after they realize they were just tools for the UW's own personal gain. They have a heartfelt reunion and are welcomed by Ky Kiske and his family, where his wife Dizzy treats the girls like her daughters and they become BFFs with Sin Kiske, Ky's son (it's ironic, since Elphelt is JUSTICE's child. Since JUSTICE contains Aria's soul, Sol is technically the husband of the UW and thus the step-father of her children, making Ramlethal and Elphelt his step-daughters). Eventually, Elphelt leaves the Illyrian capital and strikes out as a death-metal artist, where she carries on her obsession with marriage and love and vents out some well-earned yells in her music. She's doing really well for herself now, with her bubbly personality lighting up every conversation she's in, even enough to make depressed or stoic characters like A.B.A, Nagoriyuki, and Zato=1 happy. Also, her transforming gun, aptly named Miss Charlotte, is actually a marriage certificate, which she plans on signing off when she finds her one true love, who may or may not be Nagoriyuki - the line in her song 'Rub-a-dub-a-dub' could also be more literal, as it could refer to her wiping the slate of her old life clean and starting fresh as a musician.
Just love the name Jellyfish Pirates. It works for some reason. Thanks for sharing these facts on the characters 🙂

He was the total performer of the weekend, playing a very weak character in a field of others playing top tier characters while popping off for the crowd every chance he got. It was incredible lmao. He even got a "LET'S GO HAYAO, CLAP CLAP CLAPCLAPCLAP" chant going.
Don't know if anyone recommended the channel GekkoSquirrel for his breakdown of the meaning behind the strive songs. (P.S. Zato is the best)
