Bit of background: Phantom Liberty itself is addtional content for the game Cyberpunk 2077, and this video is a slightly altered version of what plays over the credits after you've completed this part of the game. I can unashamedly admit that the first time I finished Phantom Liberty, the ending I got had me bawling my eyes out for 5 minutes, the music just added to the mood.
"Is this video game music!?" I find it kinda funny that some peoples perception of video games is still stuck in the 90s. It's really a whole art form these days.

This game and this extension, from which the music is taken, sound magnificent. The story and characters are incredible and the music, which tells their story, enhances the whole. In short, a word of advice: play the game and make up your own mind.

Videogames get a bad reputation sometimes, like its what kids waste their time on. This game is art. Its like a blockbuster movie that you get to participate in. The design, art direction, soundtrack,storytelling, all put together into one piece of art.
Not to mention one of the best games ever. I have probably played the complete game at least 10 times. I have over 1000 hours in that game. And the fact that you have at least 7 different endings to the game makes it so replayable. It truly is a piece of art from the smallest detail to the complete world of Night City and surroundings.
I totally agree which is what kinda irritates me. I’ve been playing since day 1 on my ps4, I’ve played through all the updates, seen everyone and their mom and grandma hate on cyberpunk over the years. What irritates me is apparently nobody seemed to be able to see the potential, and now that it’s realized they all praise it. But a few years ago were sh*tting all over it nonstop. That irks me.

Dawid Podsiadło, who sings in this song, is one of the best vocalists in Poland today. In addition to performing this song, he sang on the Cyberpunk Edgerunners soundtrack and played one of the characters in the Phantom Liberty expansion. They went so hard into the whole spy thriller campaign for Phantom Liberty they just said "Screw it. Let's make a Bond movie theme tune." And what a great decision it was.
So, to give you a bit of context, Phantom Liberty is an expansion for the Cyberpunk 2077 game, a side story. In 2077, America is divided into the NUSA, New United States of America, and the free states. The game takes place in Night City, a megacity in the free state of North California. Now, in Phantom Liberty, you are thrown into a spy-thriller story revolving around Rosalind Myers, the president of the NUSA, Song So Mi or Songbird, a netrunner (hacker) so good that she works for the president, she's the "robot girl" from the video, and also, FIA (Federal Intelligence Agency) Agent Solomon Reed, played by Idris Elba, a man who is both loyal to Rosalind Myers and who was also betrayed by Songbird at one point and left for dead. It's a very complicated story involving politics and a lot of psychological games, where you have choices which affect the ending. "Wires and Chains" from the chorus pretty much sums up Songbird's situation, where the "wires" she uses to connect herself to the net and work for the president are also her chains, as she is an extremely valuable asset and therefore pretty much a prisoner in her workplace.
The lyrics are about the story of the phantom liberty storyline in the game, “feels like a game, you have to play, you can’t escape” In the game the president is an evil manipulative person who uses her loyal agents as she see fits and abuses them, and they can’t escape her and they have to abide by her, and the main character gets mixed up with all of this and is in downward spiral and only way out is through. You can’t escape, you have to play. No one is free, they’re all wired and chained, mere puppets, liberty is just a phantom.
Yep. In addition, there are not good choices. Everything has it's price and always someone will get hurt, even though their motives may be noble. God, I love this game! :D
Videogames have been hitting the spot for soundtracks for more than two decades now. We've got tons of incredibly memorable music over the years and even some mediocre/not so great games usually have at least decent music. It's absolutely worth checking out.

Every game will have a completely different style to suit the creators own needs and the music for all of them accommodates this perfectly, leaving us with just an absolute plethora of incredible and unforgettable tracks across all genres imaginable
‘Video game music’ is no different to ‘film music’ or just ‘music music’. The lyrics are in context with the storyline of the game and not it being an actual video game.

Video games music is regular music. 1) But it relates to a story you took part in, if you played it. 2) thinking a video game music can be less than “regular music” means you probably don’t realize video games are at the same level as movies; it tells a story through every trope and means a movie can have (and then more). Pong and Tetris are 30 years ago, video game industry grew/matured. Fast. I believe emotions are now better conveyed in a video game than in a movie. Seeing someone who is not into game realizing that games may be more than pong always makes me slightly happy. So here is my upvote.
Sorry to nitpick, because you're otherwise right, but Tetris is just barely 40 years ago, and Pong is a little over 50. A quarter of a century ago, we got 3 in-game performances and a theme song from David Bowie, in "The Nomad Soul" - "regular" music in games started just about 10 years before that.

The *entire score* of Cyberpunk 2077 is full of bangers. It’s ALL good. From the combat music to the in-car radio stations. In my opinion it’s the best game sound track *by miles*.

I got teary eyed with the Phantom Liberty ending I did, I saved songbird from Reed, felt bad about it every way . I wish I could play this game over again for the first time, Cyberpunk 2077/Phantom Liberty is gaming masterpiece. I didnt play until patch 2.12a so I dont know anything from the early days...all I know now is its one of the best games in history, period.

I love that this song is just so good on it's own to elicit that reaction, you definitely picked up n some themes here (not least of which the tongue in cheek "feels like a game" in the chorus), but the whole song echoes a lot of the themes of the Phantom Liberty expansion - wires and chains binding us, be they real or metaphorical, making us do things we don't want to sometimes. And so much more. And it also sounds like a James Bond song for a reason :)
There is so much awesome gaming music! I actually went to a concert last friday with a symphony orchestra playing gaming music. And there is one piece from that concert that gives me goosebumps every time I hear it and that is The Dragonborn comes! The story is that in the game Skyrim you can visit inns and there is usually a bard who sings this song. And a mexican singer songwriter made her own version of that song. And then it was changed by the makers of the concert I went to to fit with the head score of the game. Would love to see you react to that. yes this is music from a video game, but not really video game music. the song and animation are the end credits of the spy-themed expansion. you don't play while this song plays, "just" watch and reflect on the decisions you just made. the mission and gang themes are really great. they build up from calm to tense to action to fit the gameplay. Valentino's theme is a bit long, but a great example. Contra La Luna, too and a bit shorter. oh and the game cuts and jumps in the song to match what you're doing, so this gets really immersive.
Video game tracks have a very interesting composition depending on what it's being used for. Because they can sometimes be used in contexts that don't match the length of the song, some have to be able to loop seamlessly to last longer while others must be able to come to an early end at multiple points throughout the song if necessary in order to transition smoothly. A good example of this is "Bury The Light" from the Devil May Cry franchise. Long song, almost 10 minutes, but contains masterful techniques in mixing and awareness of the different situations it may need to be applied in. Would recommend if you're interested in actually learning what sets video game music apart from many other forms of media.
If you want to dive into Video Game music, be prepared to see all notion of music genre to be shatered and mixed together. Its mostly unique to each game and universe the music comes from. There's an anime made in the world of Cyberpunk called Cyberpunk: Edgeruners, and he made a song for that called Let you down, which is a certified banger you'd love if you like this song. The music he makes that's not related to games/anime is also cool, and would get a lot more recognition if he was in America. We all usually only have access to music relevant to our own countries, but there's so many hidden gems all around the world. I want to explain the lyrics and music video a bit, but first I have to give a little context. The music video is a slightly altered version of the credits that play at the end of the Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077. It *is* an action game, but a lot of the game actually centers around drama and intrigue. The game takes place in a dystopian near-future California, where people regularly augment their bodies with electronics. Governments are controlled by powerful corporations, and the streets are run by ruthless gangs. The player's character has a rare terminal virus that they must hunt down the cure for. In Phantom Liberty, a lead for the cure leads down a dark path, entangled with the FIA (CIA in the future) and their operations against the warlord of a ruined city district. Tough decisions have to be made by the player about who lives and dies, all in pursuit of this cure. There's surprises, betrayals... it's much like a TV show actually. Very entertaining even if you don't play games, and the ending(s) of the game are such hard calls and heart-wrenchers. It had me crying lol. All the actors (Keanu Reeves & Idris Elba!), voice actors, and writers did a phenomenal job. This music video is the credits that roll afterwards (hence the rather somber mood). The video itself is characters from the game, and themes from the plot. Playing people like pawns, seeing yourself in others, making hard choices and pushing forward, that sort of thing. I won't go through all the lyrics, but as for the chorus, "Wires and chains" refers to the wires people use to connect their bodies with technology, but those can also be perceived as chains binding people to their gangs, organizations, or even their past. The following "starting to fade" hints towards letting these binds go, to find freedom. "It feels like a game" and "you have to play" doesn't refer to videogames at all, it actually refers to spy-work and politics (hence the chessboard of people). Refuse to "play" the "game," and you won't survive. The most impactful and catchy part to me, "I'm just tired of looking the other way" refers to the dark pasts of most of the characters, who do the dirty work of gangs and corporations. It's the desire to leave it behind, to start living for yourself. This is the main struggle for a lot of the characters in Phantom Liberty, and many of them die without ever getting to truely be free. Overall this song and video was so impactful during the credits, they really did an amazing job with it.
i advise you, to please try this game. the writing, the characters, the artwork, the city building, how they approach multiple scenarios in regards to the human element alongside augmentation and tech of the future, internal politics, etc. It's a game worth experiencing alongside the music. so damn good.
ohhh yea, the game music is utterly totally bad ass... glad you enjoyed! And yea, the cyberpunk genre addresses the disconnect in our lives that happens with tech, AI, the net and how it will get worse as we start augmenting our bodies.. even a term for what happens to those who got to far... Cyber Psychoses. And also the dangers of becoming literally a ghost in the machine should your body die while your net running cyberspace. As was mentioned in another thread on a different video and one of the threads within the game world of cyberpunk 2077.. "adult game and adult consequences". Should you shell out the cash to play the game one hint to give you.. save often! And fantastic synthrock metal etc all through the game.
I love it when non-gamers start to realise just how big gaming is these days, it's not just for kids anymore, in fact it's probably got some of the most mature/dark/adult storytelling around. The Last of Us part 2 for example, it's a deep-dive into the sheer dehumanizing insanity of revenge, how the closer you get to your goal the further away from your soul you are. And the music is also really good, props to Gustavo Santaolalla.
This track and video was made inspired by the old James Bond intros. This isn't even the game. this is just DLC for the game, that is a Spy Thriller experience. I think it's great, oh and Idris Elba is in it
Watching this hurt a little because you don't get the meaning of the song from the games pov, the character that this sing focuses on, is someone who was used for the unique set of skills online, and they got a deadly virus that started to corrupt her mind, but the people who forced her to use her skills always kept her on a sort of leash, chains if you will, and we work alongside this character to try and free them, or cure them, but at the end we learned that it didn't matter what we did, they were bound to a terrible end regardless of what we did, and then kind of made a vow to the people who corrupted the girl, showing us that everybody is wired to higher people hence wires and chains, I can't do it justice on here without full context and experience but the video and song is perfect after the ending, it was truly a wonderful experience
Oh video game music is probably overlooked, underrated by fans of music, maybe their not into video games perhaps or a little dismissive. But the music is often extremely well crafted, very much like with movies to highlight certain points. to drive a narrative, have the player feeling a certain way. It can really drive the momentum, and is the life blood of video games. Worth listening to, even if your not into videogames. There are many ways to tell a story through both image and sound, and video games do this very well. Could be well worth a listen, and may surprise as to the depth and scope that game designers, will go to convey mood, plot and ultimately tell a story.
This music piece (and music video by extend) actually closely mirrors a blend between a James Bond spy thriller opening song, and the setting of the videogame in question. It's very deliberate that the pacing, instrumentals, and even cinematography of the visuals harmonize in this way. They perfectly reflect what you as a player experience during this game. It's nothing short of amazing.

The "game" referred to in the lyrics is the spy trade. This is the end credits for what's basically a dark, gritty spy thriller where you are the hero but no matter how you go about it and what your values are, someone you like will end-up getting badly hurt or worse. And when you finally get to that point, this song is your reward. When and how it hits you makes it very emotional. It's one of those games you wish you could forget so you could play it again for the first time.
This song is made with max effort that even many movies can't match it. The singer is a popular in Poland, the symphony you hear in the background? They have to fly over different country and record an actual orchestra, add with the talented drummer, and many more... Gaming industry is actually bigger than even Hollywood, the budgets are tremendous as high budget games is like a mix of a movie (lots of cinematics actually performed by real actors in a mocap), music (bands, indies, to symphonies are hired for these), books (cyberpunk 2077 universe itself is based on a tabletop that is inspired by many many books, on other games... they hire real writers to write their scenario), and then tied together with interactivity that we call gameplay. Although, do not underestimate indie games, while they can't afford to hire top tier people... they have their own charm and a lot of successful ones are success because the devs pour all their heart and soul into the games.
The lyrics "Wires and chains" is about Songbird (cyborg girl attached to wires) and how her wires are her chains. As for why the wires are her chains, it is because she is a netrunner (something like a hacker in a world where everybody uses machinery in their body) who is quite unique to other netrunners. Due to this, she was recruited by the government and used as a living WMD. Her wires, that let her use her expertise, are also her chains, that don't let her leave the government. [Spoiler warning] Another interpretation that can be found is that what she does with those wires also made her sick with an incurable disease, which chains her down and she has to look for a cure.
No shame here, when I finished PL -- i chose to side with Songbird, taking her to the ship (WHICH IN ALL WAS A CRAZY INTENSE PART OF THE QUEST!) -- but when she told me that I wasn't going to get the cure I ultimately gave her up to Reed at the end. At the moment when he takes her ....and the music kicks in, goes to credits with that song....OMG my jaw dropped and the emo strings were tugging for sure. It was a PERFECT ending for me. VERY powerful! Such a GREAT production, to me,. Chef's kiss!
One way this music video could be interpreted, especially if you play the game, is that each person has their own agenda. You, the player, are a new piece on the board game. Being pulled in each direction to sway you and it determines the outcome. But just like in spy thrillers, you don't know anyone's intentions. Yet it's a game out of your control.
cables in this music clip give straight reference from the game, because in that lore we have separate occupation known as netrunner, guys who connect themself to the net with cables plugged into socket behind their heads., or personal link in arms. as for chains, it can mean that this girl in clip has her limitations in her life, because as netrunner she was spotted by gov services and she spent years for working in that gov services.
This expansion literally just emotionally tears the player apart. You have to choose to survive and betray someone in the process. You are either the victim or will make someone else a victim. No good choices, no "good" endings, you will second guess yourself if you did the right thing no matter what choices you make. What a game 🤲🏼

Every aspect of video games is getting to be just as good or better than other forms of media. Music, storytelling, acting, choreography, cinematography, even poetry and prose in video games. I've known several people who've gotten into video games simply because they felt like they were missing out on a good story or movie-like experience. They didn't even care about the gameplay.
Wires and Chains is my favourite Bond theme. Phantom Liberty is the most engaging story, with main characters and events that draw you in. For me the best game yet alone dlc I have played.

Oh and as a side note, modern games have evolved into a high production art form. Phantom Liberty is actually a story expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 and it stars Idris Elba. The main game also has Keanu Reeves playing a major part. So, it may not surprise you that the music side of the business has been amped up as well and video game musical compositions really are on par in many cases with movies because the games now cost more than many movies to produce.

Games have ascended far beyond being simple playthings, billions are poured every year into these things. Cyberpunk 2077 was announced all the way back in 2013, 7 years in the making, Elden Ring hired George R. R. Martin to conceptualize it's lore, the original Medal of Honor was written by Steven Spielberg. Famous bands and whole orchestras are hired to write and record game OSTs, Hans Zimmer is known for making a few scores for some games. Many games, like Cyperpunk 2077 are designed for mature audiences, people who still think games are just for kids are living in the past.
Hmm...I always get surprised myself when other people are surprised that things related to video games are good. Like people not giving a chance to the Netflix show Arcane because it's connected to League of Legends, and then crying their eyes out after episode 9, both because of the ending and for Season 2. This industry probably touched this level of quality and seriousness around 2009, when Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 was released. Hans Zimmer scored the game, Lance Henriksen voiced the antagonist, and the story itself was something that had never been thought to be possible with video games. Now, in 2024, my study playlist is around 50% video game music, from games like Elden Ring, the Dark Souls trilogy, Bloodborne, League of Legends, Penumbra, Ghostrunner, God of War, Far Cry, Assassin's Creed, Skyrim, Ghost of Tsushima, and Call of Duty. My other playlists contain songs from Cyberpunk 2077, Death Stranding, Metal Gear Solid, and Devil May Cry.
If you play the game and become emerged in it's story, all of the songs hit differently and have totally different meanings. The game is very well put together and has several songs that are hits. All of them hit at the exact moment they're needed and bring up all kinds of emotions given the situations. CP2077 is one of the greatest games of all time, in my honest opinion because of this. Marcin Przybyłowicz, P.T. Adamczyk and Paul Leonard-Morgan knocked it out of the park.
Yes. I was amazed by the songs they produced for this game. In so many genres. Hits after hits. Tens of them. Sometimes I just cruise around the game to listen to their songs and watch the city design.
"Wires and chains" and "it feels like a game" are both phrases surrounding Song Mi's backstory and the DLC's plot. Knowing the plot and the ending makes the song even more impactful for a lot of video game music, possibly even more so compared to even movies.
CDPR put a lot of work into their music and it pays off not just in a trailer like this but even setting the tone in game. This was the song for expansion for CP 2077 that had some very James Bond sort of vibes and this song nails it. The musician for this is apparently a huge star in Poland and I can see why. Cyberpunk's tone and CDPR's handling of the story as a whole is very cinematic, not every game has this level of music but in general game music has come a long was from the midi days. Highly recommend listening to anything from the show Arcane, the music is fantastic top to bottom. Not a game but teh series is built off of game roots. Guns for Hire and Goodbye in particular are just great songs.
Looks and sounds like a James Bond song because the DLC (Phantom Liberty) is in fact a whole story line filled to the brim with political intrigue, shady black ops, and larger than life villains. The whole game has become a glorious masterpiece experience.
I feel like in this song specifically with the phantom liberty DLC it shows so mi’s (or also known as songbird) pain and the hard choices that not only does she have to make but also V (the player) and reed (a character connected to so mi). So mi is chained to the FIA with wires as she is there net runner but just wants a fighting chance to live because she’s dying. So she has to become a traitor to her friends and V. Its a tragic story truly but told in a way that’s unforgettable and this song really does it justice.
This is just scratching the surface when it comes to video game music, there have been entire concerts to them(u can find them on youtube), just check out games like Honkai Impact 3rd or Punishing Gray Raven or Hades just to give u some examples and u'll love em. Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty has a story of a spy, you play as a spy, like 007 in dystopian world of new USA in year 2077. This music has a lot of 007 music vibes, because of the story in the game. CD Projekt Red (developer of this masterpiece) always delivers top tier cinema quality in everything they do, if they don't release their game too early ;D. Video game industry is bigger than movie and music industry combined, and games are the work of art nowadays. No movie can ever achieve what video games do, because video games embrace every branch of art industry, you need music, copywriters, art directors, actors, etc. + a lot of IT specialists and digital artists. You need every art related profession to make the AAA game that sells in millions of copies. This is no joke, and video games are no longer for kids, the majority of them are PEGA16 or higher. Video games are for adults, a lot of them are even better than books, and this comes from a bookworm like me.
I'd love to know your thoughts on the song after knowing the story. SPOILER the female is an agent who is essentially one of the best hackers, she doesn't really want to be an agent because she has to do shit she doesn't like. including almost killing the male who was looking in the mirror, because of orders. the type of hacking she does technically kills her slowly, but orders/her oath. the man in the mirror, has extremely strong principles, he will take his oath to his grave and do what's asked of his country/leader, no matter how much he hates doing it. This is a game in a world of cybernetic augmentation, AI, greed and nobody ever being able to really defeat evil. The two characters still care about each other, and understand in the most complicated of ways each others actions. But no one can be trusted, because no one can tell the truth.
Videogames passed all other entertainment includin music, television and movies in total income years ago but it is not often talked abnout. That is why some game devolopers and companies can hire all kinda of persons and have their own soundtracks as in Cyperpunk 2077. As an end theme I haven't heard anything like it except the end theme on 'Edge of Tomorrow'.. it wsn't too bad of a movie, but the end theme was just golden...
Halo, Doom (the modern remake with music by Mick Gordon), Oblivion, Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda, Splinter Cell (specifically the soundtrack made by Amon Tobin), Gran Turismo (specifically Gran Turismo 5 US Intro Spec I), Skyrim, just to name a few games with world-class music, each is different and specific, but each is damn good.
You can't fully understand this masterpiece if you havent played this game. This song is the resolution of a great story, you're suddenly taken into this cinematic and great music already full of big emotions. It's the conclusion of a full adventure, not only a very good music.
I love this song/video so much. This expansion was meant to be a bit of a spy thriller story, and this video and song were playing over the expansion's end credits, and it was very fitting.... it was very James Bondian, and an emotional capper to a pretty emotional end to that story.

So, back to the music, it is Heilung that has made large parts of the OST and AURORA with the previously officially unreleased track, "Animal Soul". 🙏
The DLC was about secret agents basically, so they did a sweet Bond type opening for the end credits. Amazing. The whole games has like 20 radio stations and loads of bangers.
Cyberpunk has taken video game music to a brand new level. I thought Witcher 3 music was intense but Cyberpunk... All the emotion relayed with the music that blends the whole world. I'll go as far as to say that music for cyberpunk is like a bass line for a music in general. It glues everything together. I mean, there were moments in the game where music made my eyes get to the point of watering a little. And I'm a grown up man, god dammit.
Dawid is very clearly and unabashadly a Radiohead fan. This whole track SCREAMS radiohead. That and the references to Radiohead made in the basegame, such as Judys mission "Pyramid Song" make it undeniable.
Bit of background: Phantom Liberty itself is addtional content for the game Cyberpunk 2077, and this video is a slightly altered version of what plays over the credits after you've completed this part of the game. I can unashamedly admit that the first time I finished Phantom Liberty, the ending I got had me bawling my eyes out for 5 minutes, the music just added to the mood.

Videogames get a bad reputation sometimes, like its what kids waste their time on. This game is art. Its like a blockbuster movie that you get to participate in. The design, art direction, soundtrack,storytelling, all put together into one piece of art.

Not to mention one of the best games ever. I have probably played the complete game at least 10 times. I have over 1000 hours in that game. And the fact that you have at least 7 different endings to the game makes it so replayable. It truly is a piece of art from the smallest detail to the complete world of Night City and surroundings.

I’ve been playing since day 1 on my ps4, I’ve played through all the updates, seen everyone and their mom and grandma hate on cyberpunk over the years. What irritates me is apparently nobody seemed to be able to see the potential, and now that it’s realized they all praise it. But a few years ago were sh*tting all over it nonstop. That irks me.

So, to give you a bit of context, Phantom Liberty is an expansion for the Cyberpunk 2077 game, a side story. In 2077, America is divided into the NUSA, New United States of America, and the free states. The game takes place in Night City, a megacity in the free state of North California.
Now, in Phantom Liberty, you are thrown into a spy-thriller story revolving around Rosalind Myers, the president of the NUSA, Song So Mi or Songbird, a netrunner (hacker) so good that she works for the president, she's the "robot girl" from the video, and also, FIA (Federal Intelligence Agency) Agent Solomon Reed, played by Idris Elba, a man who is both loyal to Rosalind Myers and who was also betrayed by Songbird at one point and left for dead.
It's a very complicated story involving politics and a lot of psychological games, where you have choices which affect the ending.
"Wires and Chains" from the chorus pretty much sums up Songbird's situation, where the "wires" she uses to connect herself to the net and work for the president are also her chains, as she is an extremely valuable asset and therefore pretty much a prisoner in her workplace.
The lyrics are about the story of the phantom liberty storyline in the game, “feels like a game, you have to play, you can’t escape”
In the game the president is an evil manipulative person who uses her loyal agents as she see fits and abuses them, and they can’t escape her and they have to abide by her, and the main character gets mixed up with all of this and is in downward spiral and only way out is through. You can’t escape, you have to play. No one is free, they’re all wired and chained, mere puppets, liberty is just a phantom.

Videogames have been hitting the spot for soundtracks for more than two decades now. We've got tons of incredibly memorable music over the years and even some mediocre/not so great games usually have at least decent music. It's absolutely worth checking out.

Check out Lizzy Wizzy's (Grimes') song from Phantom Liberty called "Delicate Weapon". CDPR threw in an entire holographic stage performance for the song, just because they could, and its fantastic.

I got teary eyed with the Phantom Liberty ending I did, I saved songbird from Reed, felt bad about it every way . I wish I could play this game over again for the first time, Cyberpunk 2077/Phantom Liberty is gaming masterpiece. I didnt play until patch 2.12a so I dont know anything from the early days...all I know now is its one of the best games in history, period.

I love that this song is just so good on it's own to elicit that reaction, you definitely picked up n some themes here (not least of which the tongue in cheek "feels like a game" in the chorus), but the whole song echoes a lot of the themes of the Phantom Liberty expansion - wires and chains binding us, be they real or metaphorical, making us do things we don't want to sometimes. And so much more.

There is so much awesome gaming music! I actually went to a concert last friday with a symphony orchestra playing gaming music. And there is one piece from that concert that gives me goosebumps every time I hear it and that is The Dragonborn comes! The story is that in the game Skyrim you can visit inns and there is usually a bard who sings this song. And a mexican singer songwriter made her own version of that song. And then it was changed by the makers of the concert I went to to fit with the head score of

yes this is music from a video game, but not really video game music. the song and animation are the end credits of the spy-themed expansion. you don't play while this song plays, "just" watch and reflect on the decisions you just made.
the mission and gang themes are really great. they build up from calm to tense to action to fit the gameplay. Valentino's theme is a bit long, but a great example. Contra La Luna, too and a bit shorter. oh and the game cuts and jumps in the song to match what you're doing, so this gets really immersive.
Video game tracks have a very interesting composition depending on what it's being used for. Because they can sometimes be used in contexts that don't match the length of the song, some have to be able to loop seamlessly to last longer while others must be able to come to an early end at multiple points throughout the song if necessary in order to transition smoothly. A good example of this is "Bury The Light" from the Devil May Cry franchise. Long song, almost 10 minutes, but contains masterful techniques in mixing and awareness of the different situations it may need to be applied in. Would recommend if you're interested in actually learning what sets video game music apart from many other forms of media.
If you want to dive into Video Game music, be prepared to see all notion of music genre to be shatered and mixed together. Its mostly unique to each game and universe the music comes from.
But its also mostly without lyrics.

The singer's Dawid Podsiadło. One of the most famous singers here in Poland. There's an anime made in the world of Cyberpunk called Cyberpunk: Edgeruners, and he made a song for that called Let you down, which is a certified banger you'd love if you like this song. The music he makes that's not related to games/anime is also cool, and would get a lot more recognition if he was in America. We all usually only have access to music relevant to our own countries, but there's so many hidden gems all around the world. Talent doesn't have a nationality and thanks to the internet, if you want to listen to a great artist from Japan, Philippines, Argentina, Maroko, all of that's just one click away on UA-cam.
I want to explain the lyrics and music video a bit, but first I have to give a little context. The music video is a slightly altered version of the credits that play at the end of the Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077. It *is* an action game, but a lot of the game actually centers around drama and intrigue.
The game takes place in a dystopian near-future California, where people regularly augment their bodies with electronics. Governments are controlled by powerful corporations, and the streets are run by ruthless gangs. The player's character has a rare terminal virus that they must hunt down the cure for. In Phantom Liberty, a lead for the cure leads down a dark path, entangled with the FIA (CIA in the future) and their operations against the warlord of a ruined city district.
Tough decisions have to be made by the player about who lives and dies, all in pursuit of this cure. There's surprises, betrayals... it's much like a TV show actually. Very entertaining even if you don't play games, and the ending(s) of the game are such hard calls and heart-wrenchers. It had me crying lol. All the actors (Keanu Reeves & Idris Elba!), voice actors, and writers did a phenomenal job.
This music video is the credits that roll afterwards (hence the rather somber mood). The video itself is characters from the game, and themes from the plot. Playing people like pawns, seeing yourself in others, making hard choices and pushing forward, that sort of thing.
I won't go through all the lyrics, but as for the chorus,
"Wires and chains" refers to the wires people use to connect their bodies with technology, but those can also be perceived as chains binding people to their gangs, organizations, or even their past. The following "starting to fade" hints towards letting these binds go, to find freedom. "It feels like a game" and "you have to play" doesn't refer to videogames at all, it actually refers to spy-work and politics (hence the chessboard of people). Refuse to "play" the "game," and you won't survive. The most impactful and catchy part to me, "I'm just tired of looking the other way" refers to the dark pasts of most of the characters, who do the dirty work of gangs and corporations. It's the desire to leave it behind, to start living for yourself. This is the main struggle for a lot of the characters in Phantom Liberty, and many of them die without ever getting to truely be free.
Overall this song and video was so impactful during the credits, they really did an amazing job with it.

And yea, the cyberpunk genre addresses the disconnect in our lives that happens with tech, AI, the net and how it will get worse as we start augmenting our bodies.. even a term for what happens to those who got to far... Cyber Psychoses. And also the dangers of becoming literally a ghost in the machine should your body die while your net running cyberspace. As was mentioned in another thread on a different video and one of the threads within the game world of cyberpunk 2077.. "adult game and adult consequences". Should you shell out the cash to play the game one hint to give you.. save often! And fantastic synthrock metal etc all through the game.
I love it when non-gamers start to realise just how big gaming is these days, it's not just for kids anymore, in fact it's probably got some of the most mature/dark/adult storytelling around. The Last of Us part 2 for example, it's a deep-dive into the sheer dehumanizing insanity of revenge, how the closer you get to your goal the further away from your soul you are. And the music is also really good, props to Gustavo Santaolalla.
This track and video was made inspired by the old James Bond intros. This isn't even the game. this is just DLC for the game, that is a Spy Thriller experience. I think it's great, oh and Idris Elba is in it
Watching this hurt a little because you don't get the meaning of the song from the games pov, the character that this sing focuses on, is someone who was used for the unique set of skills online, and they got a deadly virus that started to corrupt her mind, but the people who forced her to use her skills always kept her on a sort of leash, chains if you will, and we work alongside this character to try and free them, or cure them, but at the end we learned that it didn't matter what we did, they were bound to a terrible end regardless of what we did, and then kind of made a vow to the people who corrupted the girl, showing us that everybody is wired to higher people hence wires and chains, I can't do it justice on here without full context and experience but the video and song is perfect after the ending, it was truly a wonderful experience
Oh video game music is probably overlooked, underrated by fans of music, maybe their not into video games perhaps or a little dismissive. But the music is often extremely well crafted, very much like with movies to highlight certain points. to drive a narrative, have the player feeling a certain way. It can really drive the momentum, and is the life blood of video games. Worth listening to, even if your not into videogames. There are many ways to tell a story through both image and sound, and video games do this very well. Could be well worth a listen, and may surprise as to the depth and scope that game designers, will go to convey mood, plot and ultimately tell a story.
This music piece (and music video by extend) actually closely mirrors a blend between a James Bond spy thriller opening song, and the setting of the videogame in question. It's very deliberate that the pacing, instrumentals, and even cinematography of the visuals harmonize in this way. They perfectly reflect what you as a player experience during this game. It's nothing short of amazing.

The "game" referred to in the lyrics is the spy trade. This is the end credits for what's basically a dark, gritty spy thriller where you are the hero but no matter how you go about it and what your values are, someone you like will end-up getting badly hurt or worse. And when you finally get to that point, this song is your reward. When and how it hits you makes it very emotional. It's one of those games you wish you could forget so you could play it again for the first time.
This song is made with max effort that even many movies can't match it. The singer is a popular in Poland, the symphony you hear in the background? They have to fly over different country and record an actual orchestra, add with the talented drummer, and many more... Gaming industry is actually bigger than even Hollywood, the budgets are tremendous as high budget games is like a mix of a movie (lots of cinematics actually performed by real actors in a mocap), music (bands, indies, to symphonies are hired for these), books (cyberpunk 2077 universe itself is based on a tabletop that is inspired by many many books, on other games... they hire real writers to write their scenario), and then tied together with interactivity that we call gameplay. Although, do not underestimate indie games, while they can't afford to hire top tier people... they have their own charm and a lot of successful ones are success because the devs pour all their heart and soul into the games.
Video games have surpassed films and TV series in story telling, music and as a general form of art years ago.
The lyrics "Wires and chains" is about Songbird (cyborg girl attached to wires) and how her wires are her chains. As for why the wires are her chains, it is because she is a netrunner (something like a hacker in a world where everybody uses machinery in their body) who is quite unique to other netrunners. Due to this, she was recruited by the government and used as a living WMD. Her wires, that let her use her expertise, are also her chains, that don't let her leave the government.

Another interpretation that can be found is that what she does with those wires also made her sick with an incurable disease, which chains her down and she has to look for a cure.
I've seen so many people compare phantom liberty to x or y bond theme, and while they aren't wrong, bond WISHES it had a theme as good as this one
No shame here, when I finished PL -- i chose to side with Songbird, taking her to the ship (WHICH IN ALL WAS A CRAZY INTENSE PART OF THE QUEST!) -- but when she told me that I wasn't going to get the cure I ultimately gave her up to Reed at the end. At the moment when he takes her ....and the music kicks in, goes to credits with that song....OMG my jaw dropped and the emo strings were tugging for sure. It was a PERFECT ending for me. VERY powerful! Such a GREAT production, to me,. Chef's kiss!
One way this music video could be interpreted, especially if you play the game, is that each person has their own agenda. You, the player, are a new piece on the board game. Being pulled in each direction to sway you and it determines the outcome. But just like in spy thrillers, you don't know anyone's intentions. Yet it's a game out of your control.
cables in this music clip give straight reference from the game, because in that lore we have separate occupation known as netrunner, guys who connect themself to the net with cables plugged into socket behind their heads., or personal link in arms.
as for chains, it can mean that this girl in clip has her limitations in her life, because as netrunner she was spotted by gov services and she spent years for working in that gov services.
This expansion literally just emotionally tears the player apart. You have to choose to survive and betray someone in the process. You are either the victim or will make someone else a victim. No good choices, no "good" endings, you will second guess yourself if you did the right thing no matter what choices you make.

The amount of lore in the music video is insane. The Blackwall, The AI Matrix, the deep state game that Myers and Hansen are playing. The most mysterious people in the video are V (Valerie) and Reed (Idris Elba).
Cyberpunk 2077 has incredible music, you just have to play it yourself. The story, the music, the graphics, it's been one of my favorite game since version 2.12 😀

Every aspect of video games is getting to be just as good or better than other forms of media. Music, storytelling, acting, choreography, cinematography, even poetry and prose in video games. I've known several people who've gotten into video games simply because they felt like they were missing out on a good story or movie-like experience. They didn't even care about the gameplay.

Phantom Liberty is the most engaging story, with main characters and events that draw you in. For me the best game yet alone dlc I have played.
I am new to your channel. If you want to explore modern game music more, I suggest Free Again by Lara Lynn (from the game Endless Dungeon). It is AMAZING! Oh and as a side note, modern games have evolved into a high production art form. Phantom Liberty is actually a story expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 and it stars Idris Elba. The main game also has Keanu Reeves playing a major part. So, it may not surprise you that the music side of the business has been amped up as well and video game musical compositions really are on par in many cases with movies because the games now cost more than many movies to produce.
If someone had told you this was the theme for the next Bond film, you'd believe it. It captures the game's main themes of loyalty, betrayal, and what you will do to survive perfectly
Games have ascended far beyond being simple playthings, billions are poured every year into these things. Cyberpunk 2077 was announced all the way back in 2013, 7 years in the making, Elden Ring hired George R. R. Martin to conceptualize it's lore, the original Medal of Honor was written by Steven Spielberg. Famous bands and whole orchestras are hired to write and record game OSTs, Hans Zimmer is known for making a few scores for some games.
Many games, like Cyperpunk 2077 are designed for mature audiences, people who still think games are just for kids are living in the past.
Hmm...I always get surprised myself when other people are surprised that things related to video games are good. Like people not giving a chance to the Netflix show Arcane because it's connected to League of Legends, and then crying their eyes out after episode 9, both because of the ending and for Season 2.
This industry probably touched this level of quality and seriousness around 2009, when Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 was released. Hans Zimmer scored the game, Lance Henriksen voiced the antagonist, and the story itself was something that had never been thought to be possible with video games. Now, in 2024, my study playlist is around 50% video game music, from games like Elden Ring, the Dark Souls trilogy, Bloodborne, League of Legends, Penumbra, Ghostrunner, God of War, Far Cry, Assassin's Creed, Skyrim, Ghost of Tsushima, and Call of Duty. My other playlists contain songs from Cyberpunk 2077, Death Stranding, Metal Gear Solid, and Devil May Cry.
If you play the game and become emerged in it's story, all of the songs hit differently and have totally different meanings. The game is very well put together and has several songs that are hits. All of them hit at the exact moment they're needed and bring up all kinds of emotions given the situations. CP2077 is one of the greatest games of all time, in my honest opinion because of this. Marcin Przybyłowicz, P.T. Adamczyk and Paul Leonard-Morgan knocked it out of the park.

Yes. I was amazed by the songs they produced for this game. In so many genres. Hits after hits. Tens of them. Sometimes I just cruise around the game to listen to their songs and watch the city design.
"Wires and chains" and "it feels like a game" are both phrases surrounding Song Mi's backstory and the DLC's plot. Knowing the plot and the ending makes the song even more impactful for a lot of video game music, possibly even more so compared to even movies.
CDPR put a lot of work into their music and it pays off not just in a trailer like this but even setting the tone in game. This was the song for expansion for CP 2077 that had some very James Bond sort of vibes and this song nails it. The musician for this is apparently a huge star in Poland and I can see why. Cyberpunk's tone and CDPR's handling of the story as a whole is very cinematic, not every game has this level of music but in general game music has come a long was from the midi days.
Highly recommend listening to anything from the show Arcane, the music is fantastic top to bottom. Not a game but teh series is built off of game roots. Guns for Hire and Goodbye in particular are just great songs.

Looks and sounds like a James Bond song because the DLC (Phantom Liberty) is in fact a whole story line filled to the brim with political intrigue, shady black ops, and larger than life villains.
The whole game has become a glorious masterpiece experience.

I feel like in this song specifically with the phantom liberty DLC it shows so mi’s (or also known as songbird) pain and the hard choices that not only does she have to make but also V (the player) and reed (a character connected to so mi). So mi is chained to the FIA with wires as she is there net runner but just wants a fighting chance to live because she’s dying. So she has to become a traitor to her friends and V. Its a tragic story truly but told in a way that’s unforgettable and this song really does it justice.

This is just scratching the surface when it comes to video game music, there have been entire concerts to them(u can find them on youtube), just check out games like Honkai Impact 3rd or Punishing Gray Raven or Hades just to give u some examples and u'll love em.

Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty has a story of a spy, you play as a spy, like 007 in dystopian world of new USA in year 2077. This music has a lot of 007 music vibes, because of the story in the game. CD Projekt Red (developer of this masterpiece) always delivers top tier cinema quality in everything they do, if they don't release their game too early ;D. Video game industry is bigger than movie and music industry combined, and games are the work of art nowadays. No movie can ever achieve what video games do, because video games embrace every branch of art industry, you need music, copywriters, art directors, actors, etc. + a lot of IT specialists and digital artists. You need every art related profession to make the AAA game that sells in millions of copies. This is no joke, and video games are no longer for kids, the majority of them are PEGA16 or higher. Video games are for adults, a lot of them are even better than books, and this comes from a bookworm like me.

the female is an agent who is essentially one of the best hackers, she doesn't really want to be an agent because she has to do shit she doesn't like. including almost killing the male who was looking in the mirror, because of orders. the type of hacking she does technically kills her slowly, but orders/her oath. the man in the mirror, has extremely strong principles, he will take his oath to his grave and do what's asked of his country/leader, no matter how much he hates doing it. This is a game in a world of cybernetic augmentation, AI, greed and nobody ever being able to really defeat evil. The two characters still care about each other, and understand in the most complicated of ways each others actions. But no one can be trusted, because no one can tell the truth.
Videogames passed all other entertainment includin music, television and movies in total income years ago but it is not often talked abnout. That is why some game devolopers and companies can hire all kinda of persons and have their own soundtracks as in Cyperpunk 2077. As an end theme I haven't heard anything like it except the end theme on 'Edge of Tomorrow'.. it wsn't too bad of a movie, but the end theme was just golden...
The video game industry has always been way ahead of any other entertainment industry. People just don't know or don't want to know.

Halo, Doom (the modern remake with music by Mick Gordon), Oblivion, Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda, Splinter Cell (specifically the soundtrack made by Amon Tobin), Gran Turismo (specifically Gran Turismo 5 US Intro Spec I), Skyrim, just to name a few games with world-class music, each is different and specific, but each is damn good.
You can't fully understand this masterpiece if you havent played this game. This song is the resolution of a great story, you're suddenly taken into this cinematic and great music already full of big emotions. It's the conclusion of a full adventure, not only a very good music.
I love this song/video so much. This expansion was meant to be a bit of a spy thriller story, and this video and song were playing over the expansion's end credits, and it was very fitting.... it was very James Bondian, and an emotional capper to a pretty emotional end to that story.

try out the OST from video game "Senua's Saga: Hellblade II" as it is a story about a woman battling her mental problems as well the 9th century hardships. As Wikipedia says; "portraying Senua's internal battle with insanity to examining how she interacts with the outside world, shaped by her unique worldview. To accurately depict psychosis ...".
So, back to the music, it is Heilung that has made large parts of the OST and AURORA with the previously officially unreleased track, "Animal Soul". 🙏
The DLC was about secret agents basically, so they did a sweet Bond type opening for the end credits. Amazing. The whole games has like 20 radio stations and loads of bangers.
Cyberpunk has taken video game music to a brand new level. I thought Witcher 3 music was intense but Cyberpunk... All the emotion relayed with the music that blends the whole world. I'll go as far as to say that music for cyberpunk is like a bass line for a music in general. It glues everything together.
I mean, there were moments in the game where music made my eyes get to the point of watering a little. And I'm a grown up man, god dammit.
