    I just tried a serrated knife (steak knife) and it worked SO WELL! Sawed through the grass and made the job fast and easy.

    Thankfully this video was the 1st result on the Google search. It may be 12 years old, but using an axe was a huge time saver.

    ...ty....over the years I have found a pick-axe perfectly suited for both dig out and splitting the old plant...letting the weight do the work...

    Using an axe for division of these tough clumps is genius.

    Thanks. Great video ... I knew it needed something sharp to cut, had not thought of an axe.

    will you still have the good growth in the first year? for example if the plant was growing close to 6 feet by dividing it will you get the same growth in the first year?

      The growth rate of the division will be slower for about a year or so. The dividing and digging out is a disruption that slows everything down. In short order they reacclimate and establish new roots and pick up the growth pace.

    When is the best time to divide ornamental grasses?

  • @phildenegri2801

    Do you have to take the whole plant out of the ground or can you separate the part you want to plant elsewhere & leave the rest in the ground?

    I’m in Michigan… is it too late to divide plant?

    • @moniqueallen2934

      Timing has everything to do with your growing season. Grasses can be divided in the spring season when the plants are starting to wake up and getting ready to grow again.
      You can also divide at the mid point of fall. You will have more work to do because the grasses are up and in full glory. As long as there is enough fall for them to start to settle into the ground - say 4 to 6 weeks before frost, then they should do okay. Spring is still our preferred time to divide.

    Best month to move, (Indiana), fertilizer needed, top soil or pH control needed. Fall transplant or not? Spacing at new location ? Shade tolerant or not?

    • @moniqueallen2934

      Generally I like to move them early in the growing season before the grasses have started to push up too much. That gives them the season to bounce back. They don't need a lot of amendments. They are fine in "thinner" soils. Maybe a little compost but go easy. They don't like rich soils.

    Hello! How far down do the roots of the replanted need to be? If I'm taking the seeds off of the tails that grow and plant them in the ground, how far down should I bury them? thank you so much!

    • @GardenContinuumINC
      @GardenContinuumINC  8 років тому +2

      You want to replant your divisions at the same depth as they were when you pulled them out. So you will be able to see where the root and the grass blades meet. Do not bury the blades - that will be too deep. As for the seed heads, you can't plant those directly. You'd want that to be fully matured and ripe and then you'd try and germinate individual seeds. I personally have never tried to get grasses to grow from seed. I do know that Chasmanthium seeds readily!

    Can you simply cut out the part of the grass which died and leave the growing section intact?

    • @moniqueallen2934
      @moniqueallen2934 8 років тому +3

      +George Seward - That can be hard to do as the "dead" part is usually found in the middle of the plant. The outside whorl is full of life while the inside has faded. I find pulling the plant entirely chopping in chunks and culling out the middle is the way to go.

    Do you divide ornamental grasses in the spring?

    • @moniqueallen2934
      @moniqueallen2934 8 років тому +1

      +Kristen Montoya - yes - early spring is a perfect time for this work. Grasses are slow to emerge, so early gives them plenty of time to settle in and start growing.
