I’m a hair dresser and I love what I do! My parents were always against the idea because of inconsistent income. But after a year of being in the beauty industry, I make just as much as a nurse. Now they believe in me and they push my sister to go for it!

It’s the old people mind set. Us younger generation encourages our kids to find a job or skills that they enjoy doing. Money isn’t a issue anymore as long as our kids are happy at what they do. My 18 year old son is a barber and makes over 1000 - 1500 a week working for himself. That teaches him to be a entrepreneur and gives him the freedom to find other skills he enjoys that can make money from.

Just starting to listen and wanted to throw my 2 cents in. I totally understand the concept of an education that doesn’t clicking in the minds of any individual in they are not interested. Been there done that I knew how difficult for a subject that I didn’t like, it was like a day dreaming and wished I wouldn’t never took it from the beginning. I never forced my kids to take a career or study in the subject they never like it, just wasted money for those class. Never make my kids to choose what I wants but their wanted instead. If I didn’t like, so my children too! So many peoples graduated and got their degrees from the University but they changed job all the time, they were able to transfer the skills from that major to utilize for a difference career wise! Even my children’s were graduated with the degree in the major they picked but they didn’t worked in that field! A careers is Career as long as they set their minds and completed, graduate!!

Don't be too harsh on parents of yesteryear with their wanting their children to be a doctor or lawyer because their understanding of what's possible (career wise) out there is extremely limited. Also, parents who never had the opportunity to have an education live vicariously through their children. Yes, it's very tiring (& probably at times demeaning) to hear parents harp about who you should be, but remember that at the end of the day their intentions are good and they just want you to succeed. As time goes by, the next generation of parents will do better because they will know better, hopefully.

I learned my lesson too, as a parent. Not that I was pushing my daughter to be a doctor or a lawyer. But I was guiding her and helping her at least get a college degree so that she can have a better future. But I was aware that for me pushing her to go college actually make her stressed out and hatting me. Until one day I saw she texted her friends how stressful she is and how much she hating me keep pushing her to go college.
I was so hurt and cried.
But i had came to realized that it’s her life. Tau noj thiab tsis tau noj los yog nws lub neej. Es kav liam. Hlub nws li kuv hlub, pab nes li kuv pab tau. Yog nws tsis peem nws ces thaum tsis muaj kuv lawm. Nws mam peem nws. Yeejnyog li tus yawm txiv no zaj dab neeg.

I have 2 adult kids and I don’t tell them to be doctors or lawyers. I just want them to have goals and ambitions so they can have a financially comfortable life. As parents, we want our kids to do better than us. We work hard to provide better resources for them so we expect them to achieve more. Success has a different meaning for everyone so we must accept what they want as long as they are doing well for themselves. After all, they are living for themselves, not us.

Your parents are hard on you because they want what's best for you. When I was young, my parents would talk down to me too. Telling me, I'm not smart enough because I didn't bring home straight A's - when they dont know a single word of English and couldn't even help out with homework assignments. My mom was convinced I needed to apply for SSI. She burnt me when I was a baby and when we came to the United States, they offered to apply for SSI for me but my dad wanted me to get a proper education so he turned it down. My mom insisted that I needed the SSI. Lol. I have a masters degree now.

This is the thing parents dont do, is encourage their kids to do what they like but instead, push what they consider is "good" on to their kids. Some kids will never grow up to have their own opinion on things if you tell them to do this or that and will always depend on the parents. Parents who never had a childhood or had a rough childhood, i can understand their frustration but instead of forcing something on to your kids because everyone knows what it feels like to be forced to do something you dont like, to learn what the kid loves to do and grow with them, learn with them.

My parents did this too… i ended up switching up majors so many times: bc I didn’t know what I wanted on top of doing what they wanted. In the end I did what I resonated with most, it took long and I was so unmotivated and unsure…but I was blessed in the end for a career that I was made for. I had to work harder, but it is appreciated & recognized in my work ethics. “When you love what you do, you don’t work a day in your life”.

Many of these parents who want their children (child) to walk the path of their dreams, because they couldn’t or didn’t have the chance to. But the major issue is, because they never did it themselves, they don’t even have a clue of how it’s done or what it takes to walk it out. Many older parents who never went to college, let alone school, expect their children to do it, but have no understanding of what it’s like and who would and would not have the ability to.
Not everyone is able to be a doctor or lawyer as the prestigious careers hmong parents only heard of. Just like not everybody is a shaman or txiv qeej txiv coj xai. Only those who have the ability can be.
Young people who have these kind of limited mindset parents should explain it in their language that way and continue on what they’re confident in.

As a saying goes, "a wise man is not a man of wealth but a man of value ". Doctors, lawyers, or scholars are backbones of society. Without them, society doesn't advance to the next level. This is why not just the Hmong people but all nationals prefer scholars.

Not True brother, I let my kids go to college to become what they love, want and desire. But after graduate they cannot find the right job for what they go to college for. They end up doing something else totally different from their carrier.

No parents should force their kids to further their education. Our kids have to want it themselves to go for it. Also a higher education isn’t meant for everyone nor does it mean a better life. Feels bad for anyone that have parents that are like this person’s story.

You said it correctly! I encourage my children that college is good but go for yourself..don't go for me bc I am not the one who's going to repay the loans.

@Koua Vang listen brother. I said further education, not k-12. After high school/18 years of age, they are no longer kids. They are adults. If they want to go for a certain thing different from your point of view, then let them. You as a parent should only encourage them to give it their all and not put them down and tell them to go for something different. We can agree to disagree, but im happy that the guy in this story found what he is great at regardless if it’s competitive or not.

What Eric meant is that a parent should encourage higher education but not force. And if your children do go to college, let them decide what they want to study bc not everyone can be doctors and lawyers.
