  • A visit to Rotherham town centre and what I remember from being a kid, many places have changed, been demolished or new buildings erected, some hate it some love it, new pedestrianisation takes precedence.
I personally love Rotherham its my home town, and I'm proud I'm from here.
    Also thanks to
/ @dronelife22 for the video fly over.

I'm no historian, far from it. Any interest in Rotherham's history should be available on the net. I just mentioned things I learnt in 1980 when I read history books on Rotherham, and as you can hear, I announce them badly😁

Thanks Gaz I only ever knew it as 'the pop in' as we used to say, I knew there was a Jessops may have been Jefferson's on Frederick street opposite bus entrance late 70s early 80s as I used to buy all my camera gear from there when I did photography. prob got demolished to build the Cascades as we see today.

Thank you Pete, glad you liked it I don't think I'll win presenter of the year tho, I hope they generate enough just to get people to look up past history, I did when I was 20 but that was 44yrs ago and just say enough I think of what I remember.

From a old Rotherham man now in Northern Ireland there was a railway bridge across the canal to Westgate station

    • @Rotherman
      @Rotherman  4 місяці тому

There was indeed, and where I mention I thought the stone work was probably the bridge stone, I looked old pictures up from the net and it appears I was correct in my assumption that is the bridge stonework.

Cheers for the comment. It just seemed to be a theme going on with bluecoat pub built by the feoffees after Thomas Rotherhams college was demolished for the boys of Rotherham to carry on with education they named it bluecoats school cos of the jackets the boys had to wear, I gut that out cos it sounded too long and boring, it's now called wetherspoons lol

Not long before I moved to Cornwall, I was in Tiffanys and met a girl that night, at the end I saw her off in a taxi and then cossed the road to walk home, when a car screached up and four men got out, beat me up and threw me over that small wall. Problem was it was very high the other side and I landed in what was the wood yard, I was pretty messed up as you can imagine. I was unconscious for a while and when I woke up, I got chased by two guard dogs and had to climb over a massive gate. I then walked all the way to Rotherham Disrict Hospital to get stitches from all the broken glass that I landed on.

What school did you attend? I was at South Grove. Then that was demolished!
The Windmill was a reputable venue for the Punk scene late 70s. Saw Generation X there.

The Corn Law pub probably just shortened it's name, as it used to be The Corn Law Rhymer. Before that it was called The Litten Tree, I'm pretty sure. 👍

I wonder if Elliotts is on the same lines or just a family or guy named Elliott? Just coincidental that's all. Bluecoats up the hill is named after the school the feoffees had built as the jackets the boys wore were blue if I remember correctly. I hope more people will leave messages let me know if I'm right or wrong.

didn't Peter Elliot own Elliot's? I cannot believe what a derelict wasteland Rotherham has become. What a tragedy. Meadowhall is to blame.

you could say a multitude of things is Rotherham's down fall really, out of town shopping is the 1st on everyone's lips, people want free parking and its easier to park at a complex than park in town. I love Rotherham always will but I understand why people call it too. Rotherham though is steeped in history if you search for it.

That bank at the top of the hill was a NatWest. My only memory of it being a bank is walking past it on the way to the chippy at a band rehearsal and there was a pile of human shit under the cash machine and all over the buttons.
    Stay classy, Rotherham. 😂🤢🤮
