- U.S. aviation company Alef Aeronautics is a step closer to making science fiction reality after its experimental flying sports car receivied a Special Airworthiness Certification from the Federal Aviation Administration. Laurie Garrow, co-director of the Center for Urban and Regional Air Mobility at Georgia Tech, joined CBS News to talk about what that means.

better than the Jetsons are you serious, George's car not only zipped him to work and back but also folded itself into a briefcase.
And the way people already drive in real life he'll be zipped up and in the car when it gets folded into a briefcase.😂
No this is more like the flying DeLoren from Back To Future 2. 😁😁😁
And it makes and bubble noise as it flys along..

So many drivers don’t follow the rules of the road, so I can’t imagine what could go wrong with this. Can you imagine road rage in the sky?
Probably ai run entirely to prevent a domestic 9/11
It will easily work its way out.. you won't be able to avoid natural selection in the sky.. im all for it.
Ever had your car break down? At least you could pull off to the shoulder of the road. These things would be falling from the sky.
Could be a lot safer, as a computer system/AI would be able to navigate it. Equip it with a parachute just in case of emergency.

With shocking lack of personal responsibility by a large percentage of "adults" nowadays, you'd quickly have drunks or druggies crashing through your top floor bedroom ceiling in the middle of the night.

Not to mention if there’s a mechanical breakdown and it just falls out of the sky, killing occupants. There needs to be a solution for that
Investing in Parachutes might become a thing

It’s been done before.. once again. Anyone who knows aviation knows that this will never be a mainstream thing. It would be a regulatory nightmare for a million different reasons. But besides at that, this thing is well out of reach of the average person. You could afford an actual light aircraft before you’d reach the price tag of this thing.

I hope they test it against bird strikes, especially in propellers. I wish they would have spoken about safety features like ejection seats with a parachute. Also, they should make it capable of floating, in case someone needs to land on water.
You'd just eject into the bottom of another car, and get smashed by other cars.
probably will have a parachute on the thing like they have on some small planes now
Well those things need to happen to get it passed think about it

I've been into airplanes all my life. And one thing I've learned is that any airplane is vaporware until at LEAST a prototype has been built AND FLOWN with a pilot aboard. I cannot tell you how many "about to go into production" flying cars I have seen advertised, sometimes with full sized mockups at trade shows or air shows, that have never actually flown, much less gone into production. My proof? How many of us are commuting in the flying cars I saw being advertised 20 years ago?
This thing is vaporware, and I'm disappointed in the FAA if it actually has certified anything about it.

Flying cars will never be a mainstream thing for countless reasons. Nevertheless, it’s interesting to see these experimental devices.
but, they get investor money from people that like to think otherwise.
Nah, imagine telling people in the early 1900s that the average person and their kids would have access to vehicles that can easily go over 100 miles per hour and travel across the country. They would be astounded. Also, for those of us who live in the developed world, the average person lives like a king or nobility in ancient times. Who knows how much better off the average person would live in the future? This is far more plausible than you think looking at human history.
U say that but alot of stuff that's mainstream now didn't seem possible

Imagine the risk they'll pose to commercial jetliners.
Bro what? They're not going to be flying as high as planes dude lol
These won't reach those high altitude 25,000+ft of jetliners. The biggest threat would be to other low altitude aircraft like helicopters and private planes. Though there is always a concern to jetliners around airports where they takeoff and land.
Needless to say, the licensing for anyone to get into one of these things will have to be _at least_ 10x harder than what we have today with driver's licenses.

If regular car accidents weren't enough. Imagine when they are flying. Wow cant wait.
I’m sure it’ll be perfectly safe and feasible. It’ll give VFR new meaning. 💥
At the very least there will have to have something that automates flight controls to leave landing and flight procedures.
Even then seems like a regulatory nightmare.
I would imagine a rigorous licensing procedure will be required to actually pilot one of these things and that a considerable amount of time will pass before they become as ubiquitous as cars.
As a pilot I can tell you this will NEVER be mainstream. First of all this isn’t anywhere close to being the first flying car, quite a few have been sold in the past. They are toys for the rich and usually the older designs had to be driven to a small airfield to take off. Flying cars have always made mediocre cars and terrible planes. Or mediocre planes and terrible cars. If it weighs more than an ultralight which I’m guessing it does a flying license of some type would certainly be required. And even if it was an ultralight (Less than 255 pounds) then it wouldn’t be viable as a roadworthy car. I’d view this thing as more of an experimental aircraft parading around as a car. I mean if your a pilot and you have 255k to spend.. you’d buy an actual good plane and call it a day. Things that fly are sensitive.. driving something that flys on the road makes no sense. Even one good bumper tap or small accident and it’s grounded.. you have to do pre flight inspections before you go up. I can’t imagine the abuse this thing would take on the roadway. It’s basically a fancy VTOL that can also kindve drive.

Taking Orders? Ha ha..
Wondering what road (sky) rage and DWIs look like in a flying car.
Does it use a game controller to operate?
Because what could go wrong?
All mechanical issues must be addressed on the ground before takeoff. Imagine ignoring a check engine light headed for the sky. This won't end well
Two words: Embraer Eve. It is already flying and has more than 2000 units commissioned.
This seems absolutely frightening to drive. Also how many UFOs were reported during the testing of these?
What this doesn't say is that to operate the aircraft, you will still need a pilot's license unless it is an ultralight, which has to weigh 254 lbs or less empty. Batteries are so heavy that to get any meaningful range, it would have to have a battery that is too heavy for the ultralight classification. You would also need a transponder. This is not the first flying car by a longshot though.
We know where this is going. We saw this on the Jetsons, and they still had traffic jams.
Incredible! But lets be real, in the demo of being able to hover up and over a traffic accident, what's really gonna happen is the driver will hover directly above the accident for a good 2-3 minutes, taking photos and pointing, before actually moving on 😆
Imagine a high speed chase

The Jetson's turned into a suitcase.
Studebaker produced 8 models of flying cars in the 1950s. These were production vehicles not experimental. Therefore this is NOT the first flying car to receive certification....it's the NINTH !
I thought for sure this would be a spoof, or an April Fool's joke (wrong date for that), or AI. Then I saw it was CBS, so I'm watching it in wonder. For a personal vehicle, the propulsion system may prove prohibitively expensive to overcome gravity.

Video didn't mention any suggestions by the FAA for how they might prevent retails consumers from just loading it up with explosives or flammables and flying it into sensitive buildings or crowded gatherings. While many try to ban guns, apparently we're full-speed-ahead with flying assault bombs.
When flying in the air with any known craft it is not possible to have absolute control as like a vehicle on the ground. Air does not have traction friction as like rubber tires on the ground. When considering having many of these vehicles in the air at the same time, the amount of accidents and most likely deaths are going to be incredible. I can see this being used as like an airplane. What happens with this if there is an engine failure or a power failure? Can it glide down for a save emergency landing as like a regular light aircraft?
Back in the 1960s there were flying cars for the wealthy. These were cars where wings would fold out and the car would become like an aircraft to be used between airports only. A pilot's license is required to use this type of vehicle. It must fly under the the regulations for flying in air space.
One could argue you could have MORE control in the air vs on the ground. As long as the technology reacts correctly. Just think of how a fish moves through water or bird vs a land animal or car.
