This cultural reality, a unique quality of this magnetic island, has already been immortalized in song by successive generations of Caribbean crooners, with even the toughest of singers being seemingly obligated to have at least one ‘mama’ song in their repertoire.
While putting their own spin on the tradition, the dynamic dancehall duo of Blvk H3ro x Wayne J lend their fresh perspective to the topic, on “Ghetto Queen”, their latest radio-friendly banger, on which they paint rich sonics and also share visuals dedicated to the powerful women that shaped their lives.
Directed, shot and edited by Fernando F. Hevia, the epic music video for “Ghetto Queen” transports the viewer into the inner sanctum, vividly depicting life in Jamaica away from the tourist spots and beach resorts. The shots are crisp and arresting, effortlessly matching the groove, easing the story along with smooth transitions and impressive cinematography.
As the visual opens, we are met by a montage of faces before settling on the effervescent smile and bubbly personality of the main character, Queen of this film, Wayne J’s mother Illene Fisher Smith. We follow her as she traverses the landmark Waterhouse Community, iconic within Jamaica’s music history, stopping at all the spots; from the market to the family kitchen, to the community shop, and of course, the revival church.
The powerful lyrics of “Ghetto Queen” come to life while watching this striking visual representation. Eeach powerful image also causes the viewer to honor the central importance of women in Jamaican society while they are honored by their sons.
