- Basketball great Meadowlark Lemon passed away aged 83 at his Arizona home on Sunday. He was one of the greatest and most popular to ever play the game despite never competing in the NBA and instead playing for the Harlem Globetrotters for all 24 years of his professional career. He was known for making unbelievable half-court shots during games, some from behind his back without ever looking at the hoop. His wife Cynthia confirmed the news of her husband's death to The New York Times .

I saw the Globetrotters in 74. During warm-ups, Meadowlark would go to half court and shoot from there. Every shot would go around the rim and then out. The crowd was watching him and he woukd be real animated at every miss. Right before the buzzer at the end of the game, he went to the same spot and shot it and it went whoosh right in. He was playing us. What a great talent he was.
The whole crew was badass.
Where did you see them? I saw them at Grand Prairie high school about the same time playing the dallas cowboys.
I saw them in the late ‘60’s. Amazing show of skill and comedy.
that is a great story
As a kid I attended games several years when the Globetrotters played my local sheriff's office team for charity. Meadowlark Lemon grabbed my bucket of popcorn and dumped it on the head of an opponent. Every year after that he spotted me in the crowd as my Dad was a cop and I got front row seats. He'd point at me in recognition and come over to get my popcorn. He included me in his funny conspiracy. That little bit of recognition from one of my heros meant everything to me. Between him and Curly Niel I went after basketball excellence and made our county all star team as a forward. Those guys had a huge impact on my self esteem. I wish I could have thanked them personally. I will never forget them.
Outrageously talented basketball comedians. I remember watching them on T.V. as a kid and laughing at all the nonstop mischief-making pranks they pulled and at the same time marveling at the skill they possessed on the court. Cheers
The black Amateur team that in 1948 won ALL white NBA team that has most championships , LA Lakers , back then Minneapolis Lakers .
3 first black NBA players , Nat Clifton and Chuck Cooper , both from Harlem Globetrotters , Earl Lloyd from college team ... all drafted in 1950 .
I played football with his grandsons. Met him a dozen or so time. He was a larger than life dude and was super nice and just seemed like a big fun goofball sort of guy. He'll be missed.
really
Did his son play basketball, too??
@@alan30189 not that I know of. His son was an assistant coach on the football team, I'm not sure of his basketball past. He is about 6'1" though, so neither he nor his kids who I went to school with got the height meadowlark had. One grandson played on the basketball team for a year if I remember correctly.
Oh how my little boy heart would rejoice when I saw the Harlem Globetrotters on TV.
I used to love seeing them on wide world of sports as a kid
They came to the sports arena my home town, hutchinson kansas, in the 70s I would watch themz my dad worked the arena, he got to know them well.
Same here. Brings back great memories.
ABC's Wide World of Sports was appointment viewing when I was a kid. Where else could you see the Harlem Globetrotters, Evel Knievel, Muhammad Ali, cliff diving from Acapulco, the New York State firefighters championship, auto racing and Arnold Schwarzenegger defending his Mr Olympia championship 👍
Only word to describe him.........LEGENDARY
Seeing them live back in the 70’s is the probably the greatest memory of my childhood. Absolutely incredible show!
I remember seeing them as a kid back in the 90s... loved it.
Most memorable birthday of my childhood...asked my parents to take me to see the Globetrotters instead of having a party. TOTALLY worth it!!!
I remember seeing the Harlem Globetrotters with my dad in memorial auditorium in Buffalo NY back in the 70s. It’s a cherished memory since he’s gone now.
One of the neatest thing I have ever seen was in 1975 in Dulles Airport in Washington DC. I was looking up the Airport concourse and I saw Curly Neal in a floor full-length fur coat with one way glasses in front leading several other taller men in floor full-length fur coats with glasses. I stood back and enjoyed the show. Rarely you get to see the Harlem Globetrotters in full regatta walking through an airport. I was fully impressed.
That must've been a real thrill! Loved those guys; watched them all the time on Wide World of Sports. Curly was an unbelievable dribbler!
The Meadowlark Lemon era of the Globetrotters was their "golden age." Pure fun to watch. I got Tex Harrison's autograph when I was a kid. I was thrilled.
I was privileged enough to see meadowlark and curly in the heyday as a child. Kudos to the opposing teams and the referees playing along with one of the greatest shows on earth. Talented people all around. Wonderful memories from a bygone era.
I was lucky enough to see Meadowlark live when I was a kid. What a talented and awesome group of entertainers!
Those were the days my friend, we thought that they'll never end. It did and we haven't seen anything like this again.😮😅❤
I saw these guys live when I was a kid. Meadowlark Lemon, Curly Neal, I still remember a few bits from the show.
That tossing a bucket of confetti into thr crowd as if it were water never got old.
A tisket. A tasket. Wanna see me make a basket?
Do you recall the Globetrotter cartoon and also Super Globetrotters?
Pittsburgh was always lucky to have a standing date on their tour near Christmas. It was usually the Sat between Christmas and New Years. My mom had always wanted to see them, so I finally got tickets and took her. I remember her crying when she first saw them. It was her last Christmas.
Milwaukee had a standing date on New Years Eve. Never saw them live but did every time they were on Wide World of Sports I was planted in front of the TV. They did a lot of school visits, not full team but 2-3 members at a time. I do remember them coming to my school. We lived 30 minutes from Madison so the team had a game in Madison but did the school thing on their days off.
So did Madison, Wisconsin - usually New Years Eve , give or take a day or two.
I was fortunate enough to see the Globetrotters as a kid. They were awesome.
I remember watching him when I was a kid, absolutely brilliant. Loved him. 😂
My Father and I went to a Globetrotters game back in the 70's. We were practically sitting courtside!
Meadowlark Lemon stood at the half court line, center sideline, and started shooting hook shots ....from CENTER..... he took 10 shots and swished everyone of them! I sat there like 😲🤯
The man was amazing! Non stop smile, non stop entertainment! The ultimate showman!
The whole team was fantastic! 👍👍👏👏
I still have the program! 🦂🥂
One of my biggest childhood thrills was to see the Globetrotters around this time period and of course, for everyone, Meadowlark Lemon was the supreme highlight of this highlight.
Me too. Saw them with my mum and dad and sister. We never really went out to things at night as a family, but we went and saw them. Haven’t thought about that for 40 years.
I had the chance to watch them perform. These guys, not the new ones. Such an awesome experience!
You do know "these guys" were once also "the new ones" since the original ones started in 1926
And before you say they were the best ever: Wilt "The Stilt" shortly played in the 58-59 season, most of you might know him not by his nickname, but his last name Chamberlain for scoring 100 points in a different league called the NBA, a record that still stands unbroken up to this day (yes even now when you read this ;) )
@@dasiro Yes, I did know that. I was born in '71 and I saw "these guys" in' 78 or so.
Had the pleasure to see them once, back in the day, thanks to my parents . . . What a show . ! . Thanks
Meadowlark Lemon was my favorite Globetrotter back then
My brother took me and my other brother to see the Globetrotters in Philadelphia in the 70's and it was so memorable. Always remember them, those guys were the best
Who remembers the Scooby Do episode they were in?
Me, I do!
Yeppers !!!
Gilligans Island too
yup
Saturday morning cartoons.
First thought I had. Man, late 70s early 80s, these guys were hotter than J-lo.
I regret never seeing them in person. Best athlete/ entertainers ever
Seen Harlem Globe Trotters several times with Meadowlark Lemmon and always AMAZING
RIP Curly....B-Ball love here from Philly.
I remember seeing them back in the early 1960's Loved it.
Me too, seen them in Lander Wyoming in 62 I think it was, they were amazing and a real treat for a young kid to see
@@garysisk3431 it was in Detroit, Michigan. I was born there.
Lucky enough to say I saw them in person !
Same here.
I brought my 3 kids to see them when they were little but no Globetrotter memory will ever be as great as sitting with my Dad watching on our small TV when I was little. Great entertainment!
Man I love Meadowlark Lemon! This was so entertaining! Love the Globetrotters! LOL!
Meadowlark Lemon stepped on my foot in 73. It was awesome.
The Harlem Globetrotters introduced me to basketball. On TV, I’m in the UK.
When my school decided to enter team in the county league. I jumped at the chance to play. I was so motivated because my much taller step-brother got on the team just because he was so tall. I ran rings round him. We won the league twice 😀
The Best ever Meadowlark Lemon. What a entertainer.
I saw the Globetrotters at the Cow Palace as a Cub Scout 1962-64. The one shot I’ll always remember when one player planted the ball in the center-circle on the run and the next player, maybe Meadowlark Lemon., kicked the ball straight into the hoop. The gag was used in all their performances, but actually making it was rare. The Entire arena erupted in cheers, including the team. It was a rare moment.
As a kid growing up in Sherman Oaks, I met Meadowlark and Curly when they were staying at the Sportsman's Lodge in Studio city. They bought me a coke, grilled cheese sandwich and fries.
It was one of the best experiences of my life.
Fortunate to see this amazing talent as a kid in the 70s. Meridian, MS.
Same. Washington DC, for me.
Loved watching them on TV here in Ireland in the 1970s and 80s ...then spend the next day at school talking about it! :)
Such a class act! Saw them in the 70's such fun ❤️
I was blessed to see them in-person back in the late '70's. Such masters at the craft and they always put on a great show.
THAT TEAM WITH MEADOWLARK IS THE TEAM I WATCHED IN THE 70'S, THEY WERE GREAT SHOWMEN AND GREAT BALLPLAYERS
Nothing like the original gang making up the Globe Trotters. Miss "em
That wasn't the original gang. Globetrotters started in 1927.
Eles eram ótimos.
Globetrotters, old and new, are amazing entertainers and so much fun to see. Once this COVID thing is behind us and they are touring again, I suggest you see them when they are in your area. I've seen them at least 20 times... and it never gets old.
This Was The Best Basketball Player in the History Of The Game nobody was as accurate with a trick shot three pointer or Kareem jubbar sky hook shot as him even Kareem or Micheal Jordan could have done what he does with a basketball every single shot..
All Because Of Magnetic Technology.
One of the best memories of time I spent with my late mother. She surprised me with tickets back in the late 70s. Never forgot how much fun it was.
One of the best shows I ever watched as a kid. Thanks Mom & Dad!
As a kid back in the 1970's, I couldn't wait to watch ABC's Wide World of Sports on Saturday afternoon at 4 pm, to see if there was a Harlem Globetrotters segment. It was the highlight of my day. They still make me laugh these many years later.
I saw Meadowlark play with them back in the early 70s. Next to Bird, still my favorite player of all time.
I also got to see him a couple years before he died. He spoke at a school about his faith. Got an autograph picture of him and we talked about the book of Romans. Both of these were a highlight in my life.
I never get tired of the antics, especially M.L.'s.
I’ve witnessed the golden age of the Globe Trotters multiple time as a kid, absolutely loved every second of the action. These men were indeed a national treasure to watch.
We love you Meadowlark
!!!!!!
I saw them twice in early 70 something to see awesome place was sold out Muncie In
As Talented as the Globetrotters were......I've always wondered why they didn't play in the NBA .
They must've truly Loved Entertaining People with their Skills . I saw them once.....Thank You for a Wonderful Night !
The original lineups they had in the 1960s-1970s were supremely talented and consummate showmen...there will never be an equal.
Our town newspaper gave us delivery boys tickets (annually?) to the Globetrotters in the 70s. Greatly appreciated it. Now that I'm 60, I realize that it was a very significant gesture.
Loved watching these masters of basketball on TV back then...
Used to watch them when they were on TV, always a great act.
I think the Harlem Globetrotters are why I started loving basketball as a young girl.
I witnessed and shook hands with Meadowlark Lemon in elementary school. I was most impressed with jovial manner. My second most cherished elementary school celebratory. Richard Petty was my first favorite. I am still more a car guy than basketball guy at almost 60 y/o.
Lucky enough to have seen them four or five times growing up. Every year, the day after Christmas they played at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena, and my dad took me a bunch of times. Tremendous.
Everybody knew the Harlem globetrotters when I was growing up in the late 70s. I've never been to a show but I think I'll make the effort. I bet they're amazing to watch.
as a young boy growing up in the 70’s it was a magical time watching them on a Saturday ABC Wide World of Sports
what happened
I remember seeing the Globetrotters perform when I was 7 years old. Such a great time for kids and adults alike, I was laughing the whole time at their pranks and was amazed by their trick shots. So much fun
GRANDI, GRANDI e grazie……
Growing up in this era, we LOVED these guys.
My dad loved serious basketball, he grew up playing at a small school in northern Michigan, but when ever the globetrotters were on we would watch, Meadowlark was the best and Curly Neal was amazing, loved it, great memories.
The best team ever I can remember the times I had watching them play on tv you are truly the best. Keep Balling! Love you.
They rocked! I saw them when I was younger. They were so funny! 😅
They had visited my city once when I was in elementary school, really liked them. They had played against Lakers and had enjoyed every moment of the match!
This is priceless and timeless an absolute legendary entertainment.
I have laughed so much and really enjoyed watching it.
Thanks a million and bless you

Meadowlark did me the great honor of coming into the stands during a play, grabbing my camera, and taking a selfie with me back in the day before we called them selfies. Clown Prince nothing - he was the king! RIP
A candid photo op before selfie maybe.
He,he,he. Beautiful
I met Meadowlark many years ago in a church. Very nice guy. I do miss him.
What a wonderful Team, they were!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I saw them on tour in Italy in the early '70s! WOW!

Great American. Few like him these days.
