The Esperante GTR-1 I recall was screwed over by being heavier than it should. Not nearly as egregious as the Storm GT's case, but the additional weight definitely didn't help. Anyways, maybe the Vector M12 LM counts as another "GT icon", though it already got brought up in a past video thanks to the Trial Mountain Endurance bug.
The end of the video actually made me feel rather sad. Justice for the GT-R LM! I wish both would be added to GT7! Alongside the R390 GT1 and Cerebera.
You need to talk about fictional cars of Gran Turismo (FGT,RX8 LM Race Car) BECAUSE I think it's an interesting idea (especially you need to talk about FGT because it's criminally UNDERRATED!)
I could have sworn there was already a video critiquing the Vision GTs. I haven't watched it in a while but I thought the LM Edition cars were brought up, but if not, they are interesting vehicles nonetheless. Some of em seemed like "what ifs" to some degree, like the GTO LM effectively being a "what if the Mitsubishi GTO ran in the JGTC".
Only Roflwaffle has made me want to yell YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN to a ps1 car model. That intro (and game) made a huge impression on 5 year old me, unable to speak english and unable to really understand what that car was. I had written it off as a trailer car that couldn't be raced since once I found out about racing modifications the R33 didn't look at all like it and it took me over 5 years to find out it was a real car.
Hit it out of the park again Roflwaffle. You truly found the legends of Gran Turismo some famous and some not so famous. However I also have some honourably mentions: The Castrol Toms Supra, the Team Oreca Viper and the Panzo Race car.

Also, in '91 the regulations changed in Grp.C to the 3.5 engine formula. Anyone running an older engine could still run, but would have their performance restricted. However, because Mazda were running in the lower group C class (C2) before, they were able to enter without performance restrictions
And the engine would see use in the Kudzu LMP in probably 95-96, pretty much dispelling the "engine banned" allegations people would throw, if they'd ever bother to learn that is.
@@SetsunaTheFandomHell, the engine saw life in LMP900 up into the early 00s, with it being in the back of a couple of WM (the same constructor that broke the 400 km/h mark first) LMPs, to not really any success N2M stateside you had Mazda with the semi-factory LMP675/LMP2 program with the 3-rotor (the Courage C65-Mazda being the basis of the Funai), also to little success, as the nature of wankels made them incredibly ill-suited to both ground effect regulations and air restrictor formula. Man, I'll never forget the first time I played Gran Turismo 5. I was completely blown away by the night time driving (I was at Le Mans if memory serves me correctly). What car was I driving you may ask? You guessed it, The Castrol TOM'S Supra.
the 97 car was chosen due to ease of access as it was the only "true" castrol supra left in existence around the time it was modeled/scanned during the gthd era, the 00 car is somewhere in southern north america and the 96 is in france. a sister 98 spec car was found by cerumo and restored a few years ago.
Worth remembering that The Ford GT LM Spec II Race Car AND the Ford GT LM Spec II Test Car also are the only GT Original Race cars that have 1:18 scale Die-Casts made of them By Autoart. Seems like there were THAT big a deal. Also an ironic fact: The #3 Toyota GT-One that chased down the BMW in 1999 is the same sole surviving #27 chassis from 1998 with the exact same driver lineup.
2nd comment for the Cerbera Speed 12, I saw the racing version in British GT back in the day when they were testing. It was pretty fast if I remember, only being beaten by a Saleen, which by the way had started from the pit lane. Ah man, I miss GT1 & 2 😢
It's funny to think that Forza series carried the torch at preserving R33 LM legacy from GT, I really liked it there. I've spent lots of hours in online races with "Nissan Nismo GT-R LM Forza Edition" because with a bit of tuning it was really good to use at almost any road car tournament, and it's livery reminded me of it's former glory in GT 1 days. Driving in a Road Car gave me pleasure too, so maybe right now it is one of the best "contemporary" ways to experience this car in a videogame. Your video also gave me food for thought about "car on the cover" phenomenon and how videogames used to market. Usually I don't like discussions with the common theme like "something used to be better", for example "racing games used to be better", anyway I couldn't help but think about it in a way, that earlier racing games utilized it's cover art to emphasize specific car and make it look like the best car in the game even if it's perfomance wasn't that great. One of the best examples of it is yellow Lamborghini Diablo SV in Need For Speed III: Hot Pursuit or Honda S2000, that is used in various GT2 cover arts and even in the game's menu design - these cars aren't the best in its class, but because of game covers you look at it like it's something really special, something that stands out of the rest of the roster. Today I feel that if I look at the modern racing games covers, I won't feel anything special about the cars on it and I really can't get a solid reason of why is it happening. The last games, that made me exciting about specific cars because of it's covers are Forza Horizon 4 and Wreckfest - and after I didn't feel that again. Maybe it is sense nostalgia, that give me that feeling about old games, maybe something else. Anyway, I find it a bit sad, that starting from Gran Turismo 5, GT Series didn't feature cars on it's covers the way that you will instantly recognize the car and want to have it in the game, they've done it in mostly stylistic way, that made cars blend with the other elements of the design, so it doesn't have a chance to stand out on its own and you probably won't even remember, what exact car was used there. In that sense I wish things were more like the past days.
One car that for me is as iconic as the Castrol Supra is the yellow Pennzoil Nismo R34 ... That or it's just nostalgia kicking in as I always used it against my brother when we played through GT1- GT4 growing up.
I think the Suzuki Escudo Pikes Peak should be considered an icon... We could also argue on the RE-Amemiya RX7, the Chaparral Fan Car, the RUF CTR Yellowbird and the Dodge Vision GT Tomahawk... Heck, I'd even consider the R30 Skyline Sillouette "Foumula" in that same bundle too!
Perfect video to watch before we drive off to the Nürburgring today and get ready to watch the 24h race! Thanks Roflwaffle! It was a good video to watch 👀
The R390 Road and Race cars were standard in GT5 and 6, but at least they were some of the "semi-premium" models in 6. They had a very good improvement, an almost premium-like exterior, the race car in fact even had a polished up livery, which is something I believe other semi-premium race cars didn't.
The absolute first car that comes to mind when i think of Gran Turismo is the SUZUKI ESCUDO PIKES PEAK, and I bet its the same for many others, that really should have been considered for this video, absolute icon!
I don't want to be that guy but it's somewhat shocking to me that the Chaparral 2J other than a brief moment in the Cars You Only Know Because of Gran Turismo Video. It was never mentioned in any of the related videos to this whether that would be the GT Meme Cars or Infamous Cars. More so the meme cars since it fitted into so many categories of other cars that were mentioned in that video from the "Just Look At It" cars, the ridiculous power of the Escudo and the He's There/He's Not There aura of the GT40
For me Viper Team Oreca and Ford GT LM are the two iconic cars, also i think Viper is the “cover car” of the GT3, like he is so marketable, he appears in the intro and most of the demos in the menu
The R390 is a semi-premium car in GT6 and not a PS2 model. It was heavily updated and only lacked an interior. And the 787B was not the only Group C to get a premium model on the PS3 The Sauber C9 and Jaguar XJR-9 both received premium models too.
I actually have a diecast of the Ford GT LM Spec ll test car. It was a sponsorship that Hot Wheels did with Gran Turismo. They also had a Lamborghini Veneno race car, the Peugeot VISION GT car, and a few others over time. (That might be a neat video idea: Gran Tursimo's presence outside of the video games, kinda like how the original game had people talking about cars in a different way.)
The ford GT40 is infamous in GT2, in which it boasted good AI and a horsepower number above the maximum allowed limit at Rome during the Historic Car Cup.
Every time I watch a video like this, I hope someone will mention the Tommy Kaira ZZII from GT3. Having 100%'s the game more than once, it was still my favourite car to drive and yet no one else seems to remember it
Man, it’s good to hear the backstory from these cars. For TVR, there are some models I would like to see in Asphalt 9: Legends Unite because not only the famous ones feature, but some of the cut cars that would make the roster a bit bigger with the Griffith reboot being the longest class D king.
Great job as usual Roflwaffle... A car to examine the history on would be the Toyota 7 race car. It has a very checkered past through all it's iterations. Might be a great medium length topic for a future video

Can't wait for _Icons of Gran Turismo Vol.II_ with the XJ220 LM & Espace F1. Oh and the Panoz GTR-1. Maybe RUF?
Viper should be in there too.
Venturi 600 maybe? From gran Turismo 2
@@BogdanVirijevicyep. Ayumu Uehara's Atlantique 600LM. One of the most OP cars in GT2 along with 767B.
Gran turismo actually made me fall in love with the pagani zonda r and the r92cp the most
Hit it out of the park again Roflwaffle. You truly found the legends of Gran Turismo some famous and some not so famous.
My hero car has to be the Ford GT (LM Race Car Spec II) with GT4 being my first game I played. However I also have some honourably mentions: The Castrol Toms Supra, the Team Oreca Viper and the Panzo Race car.
Thank you for the info on the Castrol Tom's Supra and the Ford GT LM Race Car. I did not know that :)
Fun fact, the black livery with blue window banner is an actual livery used by Nissan for the R390. It was a test livery in preparations to Le Mans 1998
34:20 that darlington race is nascar’s designated throwback weekend, it’s been around for close to a decade now so basically all of the iconic nascar schemes have already been done at least once if not many times
Was really waiting for a video like this, as there are so, so many cars whose entire identity to me is tied to Gran Turismo. I am also a diecast collector, so I am working on a mini-collection of GT icons. Already have a few, like the Calsonic R32, Takata NSX, the Gran Turismo 4 GT and R34 pace car.
the Spec II Ford GT is why I love the 05-06 Ford GT mostly cause of the 02 concept version car wheels
I'll always remember getting a TVR speed 12 up to 275 mph in GT4 and it being the fastest I ever went in a game until the SRT vision car in GT sport.
The GTR LM part got me crying ngl
Your patreon roster is getting stronger! Keep up with the good work!
@@SetsunaTheFandom I didn't know that, learn something new every day!
@@SetsunaTheFandomHell, the engine saw life in LMP900 up into the early 00s, with it being in the back of a couple of WM (the same constructor that broke the 400 km/h mark first) LMPs, to not really any success
N2M stateside you had Mazda with the semi-factory LMP675/LMP2 program with the 3-rotor (the Courage C65-Mazda being the basis of the Funai), also to little success, as the nature of wankels made them incredibly ill-suited to both ground effect regulations and air restrictor formula.
Can't remember for know long wankels were LMP2 legal, but it was pretty deep into the 00s.
Man, I'll never forget the first time I played Gran Turismo 5. I was completely blown away by the night time driving (I was at Le Mans if memory serves me correctly). What car was I driving you may ask?
You guessed it, The Castrol TOM'S Supra.
the 97 car was chosen due to ease of access as it was the only "true" castrol supra left in existence around the time it was modeled/scanned during the gthd era, the 00 car is somewhere in southern north america and the 96 is in france. a sister 98 spec car was found by cerumo and restored a few years ago.
a few cool cars with 36 - Eagle Weslake TF1 that Dan Gurney used at Spa Francorchamps way back in 1967 - wish that was in GT
T1G even!
This channel is brilliant. Such a nostalgia hit.
the best gran turismo icon is obviously the daihatsu midget
Nah bro it's the Citroen 2CV
Pink Vitz/Yaris: "Excuse me, am I joke to you?".
Everyone: "Yes, you are!".
Yellow Evo: "Amateurs."
What timing with the return of the Castrol NSX GT500. I love it!
One car that for me is as iconic as the Castrol Supra is the yellow Pennzoil Nismo R34 ... That or it's just nostalgia kicking in as I always used it against my brother when we played through GT1- GT4 growing up.
This video is truly iconic
The toyota woodone is my favorite car personally. The aqua livery and its sound are my entire childhood.
The first thing that comes to mind when I think about GT 4 is that my PS2 looks like it's about to crap out. Can't even think about that.
PD went out of their way to fully optimize the capabilities of PS2 despite still having limitations of only being able to bring up to 5 CPU cars.
Every upload you make is a great day! Great vídeo as always.
The R390 Road and Race cars were standard in GT5 and 6, but at least they were some of the "semi-premium" models in 6. They had a very good improvement, an almost premium-like exterior, the race car in fact even had a polished up livery, which is something I believe other semi-premium race cars didn't.
Another excellent video, brilliant mix of the gt series lore and stories of real world racing.
Castrol Supra, Ford GT LM, Escudo, the black edition cars in GT4 used dealership, Mazda Demio lol ❤
More so the meme cars since it fitted into so many categories of other cars that were mentioned in that video from the "Just Look At It" cars, the ridiculous power of the Escudo and the He's There/He's Not There aura of the GT40
when i think of gran turismo the first car that always comes to my mind is the castrol supra. i love the castrol supra
"We're taking on the cream of the crop." For some reason, as you were saying it, I heard it in Macho Man's voice in my head!!!!😂😂😂😂
Incredible work mate 👏
Just started the 45 minutes of my break, tysm sir
Just in time for the return of 2000 JGTC NSX
For me Viper Team Oreca and Ford GT LM are the two iconic cars, also i think Viper is the “cover car” of the GT3, like he is so marketable, he appears in the intro and most of the demos in the menu
The R390 is a semi-premium car in GT6 and not a PS2 model. It was heavily updated and only lacked an interior. And the 787B was not the only Group C to get a premium model on the PS3 The Sauber C9 and Jaguar XJR-9 both received premium models too.
The Oreca Viper, C5.R and Castrol Supra are the secondary holy trinity of GT3.
liked for tekken ost stayed for goated video
I actually have a diecast of the Ford GT LM Spec ll test car. It was a sponsorship that Hot Wheels did with Gran Turismo. They also had a Lamborghini Veneno race car, the Peugeot VISION GT car, and a few others over time. (That might be a neat video idea: Gran Tursimo's presence outside of the video games, kinda like how the original game had people talking about cars in a different way.)
31:14
I believe this car is coming to 7 this week.
The ford GT40 is infamous in GT2, in which it boasted good AI and a horsepower number above the maximum allowed limit at Rome during the Historic Car Cup.
What is crazy is the Nismo GT-R LM is in every forza from horizon 3 onwards as at least dlc
Might be a great medium length topic for a future video
how the hell do you only have like 40k subscribers? this is a top quality video essay
Got a massive 500ml cup of Chai. About to enjoy the next hour. Roflwaffle vids are a must watch, and a hit beverage makes it exponentially better.
Roflwaffle GT video? Day was made
2:51 BASED MAN
Also, the 787B also had its stealth variant return as a premium PS3 model in GT5 as DLC and 6
Man, this upload comes in at the best time when the confirmed Mugen NSX is coming to gt7
Guys I think he likes Gran Turismo
No Escudo is a crime
