This video just sold me on the row machine as my goto cardio exercise. Thank you for such an informative video! I have a bad knee and have been searching for a cardio exercise. This saved my life as it was causing me depression after my injury.
Shane, that’s me man. Played basketball for 17 years and luckily I’ve never torn anything but I’ve had my fair share of awkward landings. In college, that’s when the pain got was at its worse. During a time when I really wanted to get in shape, I was discouraged due to the pain. I got a rowing machine this Christmas and it feels great to workout my legs again! I have become a workout junkie due to owning a rowing machine!
It use to be my knees until I got them replaced. But now it's my elbows when rowing that start hurting so I am guessing that my upper body is really out of shape. Because of this, I went back to bike riding but now understand passive exercise and why I don't feel like I get the work I do when rowing versus biking. Thanks.
Love this video, Shane! I just tore my medial meniscus, and put an inline skate on the problem leg, so I could still train until the swelling went down. Now I'm rowing with both legs again, gradually increasing my stroke length until I'm back to full mobility. Thanks for the tips!
I wish my orthopedist, or any one of the many physical therapists I've been to, would have suggested rowing. I love it, I'm free, I'm building strength, endurance, flexibility... at my own pace, without added pain. Yeah, it sounds like a bowl of rice crispies when I first get going, but I keep going, and my body is like... I remember this, it's movement, it's awesome. And, not just my knees are benefiting, my lower back seems to be stabilizing as well. YaY!!!! Thanks for all the videos Shane, you are a ray of sunshine.
I had a bizarre hip injury this summer and a smart rowing program brought me right back into shape! At age 45, this evening I did a 6x750m/1:00r @ 1:53.7 erg on!
I got patella tendinitis in my right knee after training/ running my half marathon. Through my read I've been using the rower/skierg and today I was finally able to run pain free! I will definitely continue to utilize the concept 2 machines and hit a half marathon on both the rower and ski and plan on doing a marathon on each
Can anyone who is rowing with bad knees explain how they get on & off these rowing machines that are so low to the ground? My knees are too weak to do the required excruciating squat even when leaning onto a chair or cane for assistance. Once on the rower, I'm fine but unable to get off the machine. Any advice?
I'm an avid cyclist and a VERY beginner rower, and I do experience knee pain from over use. In some ways, you're telling me what I don't what to hear (careful with too much cycling) but what I need to know. I'm hoping rowing adds the cross training I was looking for and also helps with my knees.
Great information. Very important to talk about form in knee pain issues. As you have pointed out repeatedly in videos, bad form is bad, even if you go faster doing it. I was doing exactly what you covered at the 8 minute point… overextending and letting my shins go a little past vertical, which started causing a painful twinge on occasion in the outer area of my knee. Getting back to strict form and planting the heel firmly on the drive eliminated the issue, and my splits were unchanged. In other words, proper attention to form gave me the same speed improvements that overextending did, without the pain or chance for injury. “Length is only good if it’s good length” turned out to be completely true for me, so it’s form first and the rest will follow.
Thank you bud. I am totally in this category and feeling like I am crippled some ways. I am planning on buying a Concept at the beginning of the year and would like to go through your channel. I will look for that video so I can support you. Happy Thanksgiving to you all!!

ABSOUTELY LOVE people who can think outside the box and the CAN DO attitude.
This is what I really need! Let me repeat this video again. Thanks so much! Oh, btw, can you also show us demo on this way of rowing for bad knee? :)
Happy to put that into the rotation!
@@DarkHorseRowing Thanks so much in advance! :)

why explaining with your hands when you can show it with your knees and the machine?
The rower is my best way to work my legs as sadly my knees are pretty shot. Much easier than running, biking or anything else.

This does not help me. It would help to show.. not talk
Thank you for your knowledge & guidance!

Another very informative video, Shane. Many thanks from Sydney, Australia. By the way, what sort of watch is that you're wearing? Best, Lex
I believe I'm wearing a Casio GShock in this one.

I've used the furniture slider and rowed one-legged when I had a broken foot. It worked great!

The Concept2 RowErg is available with high legs so not as difficult of a squat.
Thank you

You want pressure just not impact. This is a false representation.
