How To Build A Company That Will Last 1,000 Years

- Rome wasn’t built in a day but that’s all it took for the civilisation to fall when the last Roman emperor was deposed and companies have it even harder, with only a select few lasting a century or so. According to Forbes, of the businesses that made the Fortune 500 list way back in 1955, only 12 were still around by the year 2014. That’s an 88% drop, the corporate equivalent of an apex predator going extinct in a single generation. In your own lifetime you’ve no doubt seen one-time behemoths of business go bust, broke or get bought out. But even the sloth dodged a few asteroids, ice ages and volcanic eruptions. That’s why a few business lineages beat the odds without ever needing to become giants.
The oldest company in the world is Kongō Gumi, a construction company from Japan who got their start building shrines and temples way back in the year 578. This company’s start was as close to Jesus as you are now to William Shakespeare. However, even that is disputed because it had to be saved from liquidation by another company - not because it was a money-making machine, but because of its cultural significance.
Afterall, is it the same company if the name is the same but the structure is different? What if it changes industry but not the logo? It’s like the old joke of the street broom that never retires because it keeps getting a new brush and handle. But today we’re not going to get bogged down in the philosophical weeds. Instead, we’re going to focus on the main survival strategies that help a business do the one thing it’s not supposed to do: survive.
It’s time to Learn How History Works as we explain ‘How To Make A Business That Will Last 1,000 Years’.

the intersection of history and business is where this channel really excels imo. there are a million history youtube channels, but not too many business history or history of business channels, so this is unique.
I agree! This is a good niche. I watch all the history and how money works vids. (all tied to business)
One day I hope for a channel for the history of business channels or maybe even a history of business history channels channel
honestly there are too many blanket statements that arent even true accompanied by unrelated stock images for me. Im taking it as a summary of googles first page regarding the question in the title
The International Paper Company is going to be around when my grandchildren are elderly. These are the people who make 1/3 of the cardboard boxes on earth. They plant tree farms all over the South knowing that it will take 30 years before they can cut them down and use them.
And this is why some countries are not going to survive the next 200 years
japan and england, as island countries near large prosperous continents, have unique advantages for long lasting institutions. Oxford university is around 1100 years old, for example.
Being near well populated continents allows them to exchange goods and knowledge with the greater world. And being an island makes it very hard for foreign invaders to takeover or destabilize the area.
Well, England is one of the most invaded countries in the world alongside countries like India.
Great perspective!
'Cept England was invaded multiple times, as was Japan. They just didn't have these particular institutions destroyed. Sounds more like luck than anything else.

Rome existed from 750 BC to either 1450, 1920 or is still going strong today depending on who you talk to.
true, plus I think what he knows about Rome is only the empire and not the pre-republic and republic eras.
Rome ended after the Arab invasions, after that it was way too culturally different to be considered Roman
@@Chadius_Thundercock And what year did these invasions take place?
I think he means Arab conquest of Syria around 630-ish AD

Great piece. Pity it was so short. Was hoping you'd touch on companies such as Dutch East India , Immobiliare, Mitsubishi, Samsung, Shell, Aramco, the Catholic Church as a 2000 year old institution, the Medicis and Rothschilds, amongst many.
The Rothschild aren’t that old compared to most of the groups you mentioned
As an entrepreneur, I must say that the whole purpose of business is money/profit. If a company needs to last longer, then it has to be able to evolve and pivot. Remember, business is about money and that's it.
no shxt but it is exactly how being able to evolve and pivot correctly in a 1000 year
The purpose of business is to provide a product or service to a consumer who will benefit from said product or service. Money is just the middle man. The point of business is to solve people's problems.
@@jordankelly4684 The point of a business to society is to provide a needed/wanted good or service.

Rome didn't fall in a day either. Depending on how legitimate you consider the Byzantine Empire and the Holy Roman Empire to be, it took another couple thousand years or so to fall
That's true. People focus on the Western Roman Empire and forget that the Eastern Roman Empire survived for 1000 years after.
This is a value investor's gem of a video. Thank you.
hey , big fan of your work .I early wait for your videos' both here and on "How money works?"
Can you make one on TATA ?
I was expecting this video to only talk about Kongo Gumi.
Excellent video as always!

Government is so lucrative because continuity is their fundamental interest, and will be around as long as the people it serves continue to demand services from it that they can't provide as individuals or even as for-profit multinational corporations.
I think Cargill will last for at least another century, a chance Mars does too but their path is more treacherous. I think Faceberg will disappear after Zuc kicks the bucket, same with Tesla and Musk. I want to say Apple and Amazon too(more Amazon than Apple) but I am uncertain when it comes to them.
I think Tesla's Charging Infrastructure and the core brand are too valuable to disappear unless Musk nukes it from orbit. Musk's actions with Twitter have really hurt the brand of his companies, but I suspect a lot of goodwill would return if Tesla suddenly had different leadership.
Instagram and whatsapp aren't going anywhere.
@@CountingStars333lmao ok bro
Seems plausible
All companies that sell arms to the US government will be around another century, Lockheed Martin, Boeing Raytheon. Another company will be around are large banks such as Bank of America, Wells Fargo. Cargill I agree but Mars can die through a merger.
Great video. Subbed for more now
Helpful, well put together video. And I appreciated the accent on “Chiquita.” 🍌😊
0:12 I like how you put so much emphasis on the "i" in the word "businesses." It reminds me of that Family Guy episode where Stewie and Brian get into an argument over how to say Cool Whip.
The last points need another Caveat. Merging the Company to the goverment doesnt only makes you financialy tied to it. But also Culturally tied. And once merged you are essentially entering their Tool Cupboard. This can mean you/ your company can be an Asset, safeguard, tool, pawn, and Sacrifice on the whims of whomever in the Chair at that time.
Unless of course, you dont fully integrate.

I think Apple will go bust in about 15 to 20 years time. Unless they become a government supplier of tech (which is what Microsoft is already) they won’t last long with their phones and computers. There is a gradual shift in society towards more stoic way of life and being cool (the main marketing gimmick of Apple) will last only for a small amount of time.
....huh?
SO the largest company in the world is going to be gone in 20 years
In terms of phones, because Apple is the only company making iphones, Apple had a unique advantage. The Android space was decimated by Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi devices, wiped out all the profit for Android side of things. Its why big companies like LG quit the market and Sony has pretty much wound down its formerly massive mobile operations to a skeleton crew.
Just cause all your hipster friends aren’t buying iPhones doesn’t mean apple is gonna go bust in 20 years lmao

Nokia sell telecommunication products . I believe it still sell chemical ,boots and fish (not sure about the fish), unless someone in Finland "steal" the logo and name to make boots, very nice boots in cold weather.
11:09 But if you do, then men will be thinking about you at least weekly, thousands of years later.
Huzzah for referencing the latest meme.
Since the Roman civilization evolved and adapted with the times, like the video suggests for business, to become the "Byzantine Empire we are talking about almost 2000 years of history for that civilization. Maybe it would not have been a bad idea to merge with it lol
Oh wow!
but rome lasted 2.000 years
I had Tons of These AOL free Internet CDs
great video! one note, Rome was not built in a day, but it didn't fall in one either! I know this proves a point for the rest of the video, but it's still not true. Rome, as in Western Rome, fell over the course of centuries as a number of social, political, and economic forces ate away at the country while Germanic tribes moved into Roman territories. Even this is a massive oversimplification, before even considering the Byzantines.
This isn't "How History Works?" This is "How Money Works?".

We should ask the Japanese how often they think about this company
You mention Warner Media staying around yet Nokia which you picture saying companies go bust during a market crash; is way older and has been around since the 1860’s. Nokia is more likely to last compared to Warner Media
Is this sub channel of "How Money Works"?
I heard that Comcast, the parent company of Universal Pictures, is likely to acquire Warner Brothers in 2024. Is this true?
Thought they're talking to Paramount. Who knows, good luck to them
Amazon. They do everything but I see them being a relic of the past. I see a company like Sony, Apple and Microsoft staying and or merging.

I could totally see Apple around in a 100 years. Google? Not sure. Microsoft? Not sure. But Apple I can see, even if they would be only a shadow of today‘s company, they could certainly be around in the future, if they continue to adapt.
I think Apple will be the company that makes it into history books for it eventual collapse. I am a fan of Apple computers yet not the mobile devices so much. If viable in 100+ years will it be the same industry?
Microsoft is way more diverse (as in, they have way more businesses) than Apple.
I think Most streamers and tech companies that were founded in the past 10 years will be dead and forgetting before I retire

It honestly has been kind of annoying just because I didn't understand why id find so many of just that brand so frequently but this video may have just provided me with a likely answer.
George Lucas allowed Mel Brooks to get special effects made for the Spaceballs movie (A comedy mostly spoofing Star Wars) on condition that they didn't do merchandise, so the movie itself is full of shameless product placement for merchandise that doesn't exist as a running joke. They were also told that they couldn't dress their male lead like Han Solo, so they dressed him like Indiana Jones instead 🙂.
Tata, Reliance, SBI will all last a 100 years

Lol what a comparison with Rome, Rome even in their ancient kingdom times existed before the Japanese construction company (which only existed around 470 years after Christ died), while the Western Roman Empire fell before even reaching 500 ad, the Eastern Roman Empire stood still for another thousand year--while it is agreeable that the Western Roman Empire only changed regime since the people were still the people, it is debatable since we're not so sure if the main framework of the Roman Empire is still the same with the later Western Empires (in the latter days of the Empire, of course Christianity became the dominant cultural ethos and it since then changed some of the ways in the Empire)
The "Federal Reserve"😏
But is that company profitable or just a zombie company?
I'm ok with civilizational collapse, so long as Google goes with it.
The Roman Empire didn't fall in a day. The Eastern Roman Empire, aka the Byzantine Empire, lasted till 1453, when Constantinople fell to the Turks.
I see the decline of Netflix. Either get bought out or bust.
The Roman Empire lasted longer than this company (falling in the 1,400's, and specifically the imperialship being founded in 27B.C)
BUT, if they keep the company alive for cultural signifigance then eventually it will. I believe the company is about 1,443 years old, and the Roman Empire being just under 1,500. Just a few decades away.
Though if we go into the legal system of Rome, the empire would have fallen in the 1900's with the end of the Ottoman Empire. (According to Christian, Ottoman, Roman, and Muslim laws it would be the Roman Empire. Unironically being Roman isn't even a requirement, being competent and taking the title from the previous emperor with God's aid is the only requirement to be Roman Emperor)
Are you sure? Rome survived for more than 2000 years
nokia in theory still exist

You can pick renewable energy or food stamp printshops as safe haven. Eventually cloud computing and telecoms. Wages will increase with higher demand and inflation.
