- I've just bought a 2021 Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 and thought I'd explain the thought process behind why I picked this beginner motorcycle and what made it stand out from all the choices.
Big factors were a great spec loadout, with a powerful engine, competitive suspension and brakes and an extremely good price...

Absolutely love my svartpilen. Been riding for 20 years and bikes of various engine capacities... but this one is hands down, the one that has made me smile the most.
As an aside, I'm only 5'4" and have no problems with the seat height. 👌

@@coldnoodles2951 I'm 5'9 1/2 (177cm) and had a Vitpilen. I had a problem with the seat height. I am going to buy a Svartpilen and get the lowering kit. I think the problem will be a little reduced on a Svartpilen with the more upright riding position but definitely sit on and ride one first, don't by blind!

I just bought one last week in Sydney, I love it! I had bigger bikes but this so much more fun , the big mono it makes you smile every time you ride, and it looks just stunning.
There's something really cool about just being able to flog these little bikes!

I did, and I was seriously considering a 150 or 200 cc of some type to look into the viability of the much smaller machines, but I just couldn't pass the 401 when I saw it again, especially at the prices these were going for!
Fab Video Kris. I bought the Svartpilen back in April, based on your previous review. I’m absolutely chuffed with it. I’ve had a few bikes, but this is go-to bike, for commuting and around town. It has incredible performance for a small single and for a LAMs (A2) bike, it’s so much fun. I actually prefer riding the 401 to the Honda CB650R. People always comment on the design, something I haven’t had with previous bikes.

I saw your reviews years back. I got the svart and im still loving it to this day. its my commuter, weekend getaway vehicle. you definitely get a lot of value from this bike if you are a beginner or just looking for an adventures svart is definitely a good motorcycle to do it.
hows the quickshifter? i heard you dont need use the clutch with quickshifter
@@xfadl I actually have the 2019 model which dont came with a quick shifter . 2020 onwards came with it standard. wish my bike could have that feature.

@@MotoJournoKris I own a 2021 401 as well, and have put about 1700 miles on mine since december last year. 99% of that has been on pavement and as much as it pains me, ive given some thought to switching to 100% street oriented tires. If you had any thoughts on that. Would also be interested in hearing about your experiences with this gearbox when using the quick shift vs traditional shift methods. Tinker vids would be cool too.
@@fb4509 Honestly, if you're doing almost pure tarmac if just makes sense to fit a set of good road tyres, and I think you'll have more fun. The stock tyres are a good dual purpose tyre, but a set of sticky sportier tyres will likely take the bike to the next level.
So far the quick shift seems quite clunky, especially having ridden my sister's 390 Adventure on which the quickshift is much smoother in both directions. So far traditional shifts definitely seems smoother, but I'm not sure if there's a knack to how the 401's quick shifter works.
Another good video Kris, well done. I echo everything you said about the 401, I have been riding it for nearly a year now. Such a good beginner bike. I am so glad I started my motorcycle journey on a 401. Will continue to enjoy the bike, it still have a lot to offer.
They really are. I feel like they sit just at that sweet spot where there's enough performance to keep things interested for a number of years at least, as well as being something to really grow into. They are also amazing compared to most of the beginner options back when I started riding, both in value and in the ride they offer!

Great video Kris. I just picked up a new 2023 Svartpilen about a month ago. I love this thing! My only complaints are the mirrors (which were easy to replace) and the dashboard. I'm 64 and my old eyes struggle to see display when I'm riding. I don't care though. I have such a blast on this thing that I'm better off not taking my eyes off the road anyway. Wicked! Yea the dash is the one area that still niggles at me, although I did replace the mirrors. They are a great machine. It'd be cool to run an analogue dash I think, but I'm not sure I want to bother with replacing it.

My first Merlin jacket and I've been super impressed, warm, waterproof, nice styling, especially for this bike. Definitely a winner.

I have 6K miles on my 2020 and it’s been super fun in various environments. It thrives in the tight twisties of the mountains here in Boone, N.C. While not a true Super Moto, I routinely do 120 mile jaunts on it without any discomfort (5’7” is an ideal fit for this rig). As long as you stay off any gnarly, unpaved roads it’s an absolute hoot. Bang for buck, haven’t seen anything new that can approach it. If not for some leaky Apex forks (2x now) and minimal tire selections, I’d recommend it for anyone who wants an easy but capable machine for doing urban buzzing about, or flat out ripping thru your regional (or local) mountains, if you’re privileged enough to have access! For about $3K less than a DRZ400 SM, it’s an enticing choice.
Exactly, the SM is an awesome machine, but it was so much more than the Svartpilen when I bought it, if you could even find one. The 401 is plenty of fun through good roads, even for those who never really take advantage of the dual purpose tyres.
I have a 401 and it is the best looking bike I have ever gotten. Also, it's fun to ride as it is nimble and fast.
Very good inner urban,gravel road explore. I currently have a CB500F with a 56 litre Givi top box which I have found indispensable. It hasn’t been off the bike since I bought it. I’d be interested in seeing the cafe racer version of the 400 & 700 if you can manage it. I think increasingly people are going to look at single cylinder commuter bikes to get through heavy traffic congestion situations and rising fuel prices. Parking isn’t an issue with most motorcycles. Enfield have also come out with the newly designed engine in the Hunter 350. Low maintenance, insurance, rego, excellent fuel economy- that bike will be a big success.
Adding luggage makes life so much easier, especially for commuting. I'm trying to figure out if there's options for these, although I'd probably like something similar to a Ventura rack as it's low profile.
They definitely make a lot more sense with rising living costs, and the advantages of low fuel costs, low on roads and of course parking.
The Royal Enfields are a little pricey for what you're getting with the 350s, although I think people are willing to pay more for the retro style machines so that seems to level the playing field. Certainly for a run-around they are great options, and the simplicity is no doubt a benefit for reliability.

As a designer (Engineering Architecture) I always loved motorcycles, some look complete and most look like something is missing, like this one. Have fun and be safe 😊🇦🇺
I did wonder if adding some infill panels into the frame would complete the look a bit more, but not sure anyone makes them.

@@MotoJournoKris try "svartpilen body frame cover plate". I hadn't been able to find them myself but saved the listing I saw in one of the pilen groups.
A German company called Wunderkind also make a black frame for the speedo dial that makes it look less like a Tupperware container. Over priced for what it is but I don't regret buying it 😜
@@wasaluki2292 Oh nice, I see them. Yea I'm not sure about the frame inserts looking at them. A speedo dial would be ideal though! I'll definitely look into that too.
BW makes a nice little plug and play TFT dash. I have a 2020 Vit 701 and I love it!!

I watched your ergo video of this bike last year. That, among few, made me decide to get one myself. Look into Powertronic Fuelx especially if you plan on doing aftermarket filter & decat.

The bike's kinda lean on stock, for emission compliance. What more with an aftermarket air filter and decat.
Lean symptoms from excess heat, jerky throttle, abrupt power surge(not linear), & cold starts, all gone after putting Powertronic Fuelx.
@@psychosliver That's always the trade-off with doing extra mods. I think a slip-on you can often get away with stock fueling. But add a performance filter or more mods and you start needing a tune.
How could you go wrong?? These are hands down the best value in their segment. Adjustable suspension and spoke wheels alone put this in a league above all its competitors. Plus with the added advantage of being able to comfortably explore some open fire trails!!

Exactly the suspension and wheels are a pretty unreal inclusion on a bike at this price.
cant forget the quick shifter that goes up AND down, ABS and the perelli scorpion tires coming standard with the bike.. all for $5000 USD. Nothing comes close

Excellent video! I have a 701 Svartpilen and it is an excellent motorcycle. There is nothing like it. To me, the 401 or 701 is good out the box including the stock exhaust. It is one of the few bikes to me that have a good looking and sounding stock exhaust. The single cylinder might contribute to that exhaust note. The only thing I changed on my bike for looks and practice reasons is I purchased bar end mirrors from Husqvarna and it helped with my ability to see besides me and the bike looks better.

They're a really cool bike honestly, I'm interested to see how ownership compares to the Ninja 400. On the specification side of things everything is really close with some advantages, like the suspension and brakes.

I wasn't considering to buy it, but after the visit of this evening and your video, I thing it's a good choice. I've found some accessories at the web of Husqvarna. Perhaps you're looking for other things.
Husqvarna do have some available, I'm hoping to expand that a bit further. Really need to get around to ordering some stuff to test out on the bike!

Definitely a bit quiet for me on the exhaust side of things, but I'll probably see what I can fit to give it a little more note. I'll definitely be doing a comparison once I have time.

Hi Kris. I've got the exact same bike and absolutely love it. My only issue is the mirrors. Very hard to see in the space behind the rider.
I'm curious to know if you are planning to upgrade to new mirrors? I'm looking to find other mirrors but the bar end mirrors don't appeal to me.

The vision directly behind you as a rider is definitely quite limited although to either side is decent, makes checking for a certain type of hazard behind you quite difficult. I'm planning on replacing them for sure. I thought maybe comparing some more traditional replacements as well as bar end mirrors. I'm not generally that much of a fan of bar ends either, but thought the comparison would be interesting.
I just ordered a 2023 but I'm going to mod the tiny fuel tank and add 2 more gallons. If you cut the futuristic looking side panels and expose the tank area on the side right above the frame, you can cut a giant hole in the side of the tank and epoxy in an expansion. I'll have to play with the shape so it doesn't look too freaky but i think i can add a gallon expansion on each side. The easiest way to do it is buy an after market tank like from Acerbis and cut sections off them for the actual expansions.
Nice! I've actually wondered about chucking a 5L fuel canister on the back for longer rides, just for that reason. Shame there isn't an auxiliary tank designed for the tank rack.

I sat on one of these and it felt like a kids toy. It is so much smaller in real life than you think from videos/reviews.
They're a super compact bike, a little taller than some of the competition, but shorter with handling to match.
So. I just bought one from 21 as my first bike as of today at a fantastic price, and only minor visual damage from the previous owners off-road fun.
I’m worried now that I’ve started too strong and not much is ever going to be better value for money for me. Lol
It’s been a blast for the 50 or so miles I put in so far. I can’t wait to take it down a fire trail next weekend!
The value of these bikes is ridiculously good, it definitely makes upgrading to something as well priced and competitive quite challenging.
Great review, and looking forward to something in depth and how it handles on longer journeys. I can considering coming off my Rebel 500 and moving to this as i am not feeling the cramped riding position. Am I mad?? Cheers
Compared to the Rebel this will feel significantly more zippy on the performance side of things, as well as having a totally different ergo. I think it's easy to be left feeling like you always have to go for more performance, where I'd say if you know what falls into the 'enough' category for you, that kind of move could be something that works. But definitely see if you can sit on one and check out the difference in the riding position.

Hi Kris. 181cm and 86kg here. Deciding between the 401, Ninja 400 and Bmw G310 Gs. How does the ninja handle a bumpy road? I'm sure the GS will be the most comfortable small displacement bike but worried about quality/reliability of the BMW and the 401
The Ninja 400 is pretty good honestly, I'm about 75 kg but it's good for general comfort, without totally trading off all the sportiness factor. I'd say it's a nice all-round system, as being that bit softer it tends to swallow up the bigger bumps. The ergos being more aggressive than the GS will work against it of course.
Been looking to get something cheap and fun and this seem like the best bet. I love going on some light gravel and just exploring smaller roads so this seem like it would be perfect! How’s the engine reliability?
I haven't had any major issues, but there seems to be a very minor oil leak, normally a couple of drops if left for a few days after the bike has been run. That said I haven't done huge miles yet.
Got my name down on a MY21 Vitpilen 401 that was £1,300 off of the new price, and I can't wait to take delivery. This is said from someone who just sold his Aprilia RS 660, which I will miss dearly!
The RS is a weapon, but the 401 is crazy value, especially the run-out deals.
You should do regular reviews detailing long term ownership such as possible issues, how it costs to own, ride and quality etc
As I own this bike I'll definitely be aiming to cover everything like that, if I can.

@@waiwong7996 Keeping an eye out for that issue, I don't put ethanol fuel in any of my bikes though, which some people think is the cause of that.

MotoHUB here in Sydney still had some run-out '21 models last time I was there, I think they were listed for $7.2k now. I'm not too sure about down in Melbourne though I'm afraid...
Do you know the overall length of the bike tire to tire without license plate? Would be grateful for that info.
I've been trying to find builds that accommodate saddle bag position storage for this bike while also allowing for a switch to having a rider on the back if needed. Not much out there.
Yea it's really limited, a lot of solutions seem to be on forums with some modification required, which I don't mind. But you'd think there would be more options!
@@MotoJournoKris Exactly! Especially since there is the backseat section installed you'd think they'd make it a tad more practical for accessorizing.
Got my L's, doing lots of research on similar bikes for my first purchase. This would be a clear winner however here's a few points from my POV that are in any video you might have seen. The Speedo is really tiny and LCD so I can imagine trying to keep within the speed limit will be any easy feat while progressing through my two years of P's. There's no point having a more powerful LAMS bike if you can't learn to reign it in and not get booked! Otherwise where I ride I'll never make it to my full licence.
The lack of farings and wind protection is also a concern. Wind blasts at higher speeds are very off putting for a new rider you need to be able to tuck out of it to focus on your riding. Plus riding in colder or hotter weather is more uncomfortable when you take windchill and windburn into consideration which reduces the incentive to ride in more varied conditions and increase your skills.
Lastly while this bike has been around for a couple of years it doesn't have a solid reputation for servicing and reliability like Japanese bikes like Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki do. This also to applies to access to parts and qualified mechanics who will know their way around the bile.Especially in the LAMS corner of the bike world. For this reason I'm choosing a Yamaha R3, The speedo is bigger, and more visible, it's got more wind protection and has a top level status in terms of reliability, service and access to parts. Hopefully all the Asian brands will lift their game and start pitching modern models that will compete with the Husky, soon!
That's a fair run down. I started on a nakedbike so I wouldn't say that's as big a concern as people might think, there's a definite advantage having wind protection, but faired bikes, especially light faired bikes can also catch cross winds more.
Ideally we could get the best of both worlds with the highest specs and top notch reliability, alongside the very competitive price. I haven't had any major issues, but smaller details have stood out that I'm planning on doing a video on.
Excellent choice of bike, Kris. I can understand why you bought this bargain. Great 373cc engine. I like the styling. The 401 looks better than the 701 in terms of the Svartpilen styling. I like the dash. A lot more than the one on my 390 Duke. The tank rack is useful. The tyres are tubeless, too. What a bike!
I'm stoked with it, the overall package is impressive honestly. Need to plan out some accessories to fit now!
@@MotoJournoKris Carrying any luggage is the main problem. My 390 was bought secondhand and came with a reverse rack from India which perches just about the rear seat. I got a Givi 26-litre top case, which viewed from the back, suits the bike. It takes my Roof Boxer V8 helmet if I place it side-on.
@@user-sw2lv3zp6o Interesting, I wonder if the same rack is available for the 401. I saw a few 390 options but nothing 401 specific when I had a quick look. Being able to lock up your helmet with the bike is such an advantage. I had a big 60L topbox on my FZ6N and that'd take two helmets, or one and plenty of gear. It was great, although that size would be too big on these smaller bikes.
@@MotoJournoKris The 390 is made in India and an aftermarket accessory industry grew up around it there. I doubt you can get anything for the 401. The rack is a Zana, but I'm not sure if they are for sale anymore. Zana racks are still available but I can't find the reverse rack. It is such a neat idea. It can sit above the rear seat or further back.
@@user-sw2lv3zp6o Yep it's ingenious. You can do that with the Ventura racks and run them off the back of the bike or over the seat when you don't have a pillion.
I was planning to buy one of these, but now the Honda 500CL has made me rethink the acquisition... What do you think, between the 2? Honda has a bigger tank (12l), lower sit height, and 2 cilinder motor...
Really comes down to what you're prioritising. I'd say the Svartpilen is the sportier machine overall and possibly better value too if that's a big factor. The CL500 obviously gets Honda reliability, less highly strung but nice and torquey engine, and weighs in a bit heavier. The seating position is likely to be quite different between the two as well, I think the CL will be a bit more relaxed and comfortable there, without having sat on one yet.
I really like the look of this bike, though never seen one up close. I am a bit concerned that I would look ridiculous on it. I am 6'2''. It doesn't seem to be tiny underneath you though. How tall are you? Thanks
I'm 180 cm, it is quite a small bike. Even though the seat is tall, the bike is also compact overall.
Hi Kris, keen for a more in depth review as I’m tossing up between this, the cbr500 r and the interceptor 650 as a second bike (started on a tu250x). Value proposition is outrageous with these. Only things I’m worried about are the stalling/cutting out issues many owners seem to report, and also the stability on freeways in terms of getting knocked about by the wind (90% of my riding will be inner city, but occasional weekend trips on the freeway for a couple of hours are on the cards). Greatly appreciate your feedback mate. Congrats on the purchase
An in depth review is definitely on the way, and I'll probably try and take it up the coast, so that'll reveal how it handles the highway for extended periods. I'll definitely keep an eye out for the stalling. Do you know if that's stock, or something that crops up with mods like exhausts/airfilters? The BMW 310s were particularly bad for stalling if the revs weren't kept quite high, but I haven't seen it on the 390s/401s. Will be interesting to see if it's more of an issue in the dirt though.
@@MotoJournoKris yeah the cutting out (from what I’ve read) seems to happen when shifting down at lights etc. looks to be relatively common from posts online etc. interesting to see how you get in with yours!

@@jaydiggy86 I have heard ethanol fuel can cause that issue, but I think premium fuel is the recommendation. I never put E10 in bikes here, and normally stick to 95 or 98. I'll be interested to see if it crops up though.

I was tempted between the Duke and the 401 when I was looking. The older Duke didn't have the adjustable forks (it does now) and I think it may have already had the TFT which was better to my eye than the 401 dash. I just liked the styling of the 401 and there was a good deal going. For my use, I think I'd have been just as happy on the Duke, I just wouldn't have occasionally wondered down the odd dirt trail as much.

You buying a Svart is quite an endorsement. I just got a new 2022 Vitpilen. Unlike most, I specifically wanted a Vit. I love the clip on bars and rear set pegs. What a refined motorcycle it is, so much better than my 2019 CB300R for only $450 more.
I was very (VERY) tempted by the Vitpilen, but wanted to see whether the Svart would could replace a dual-sport - if you're not going mad on the trails. They are incredible value though, it's crazy how much bike you get for the price.
@@MotoJournoKris No dirt to ride in my Los Angeles suburb but 10 minutes away from the tight, twisty mountain roads of Malibu. Yes, incredible value. I think the Japanese are falling behind. I paid $700 over list but got that or more extra for the used Honda because of the sellers market.
There are absolutely no Svarts available and if there were they'd be marked up even more than the Vit.
@@patriciabourne9046 Definitely a sellers market, and with so many supply issues it's probably helping contain competition pressures, which may have otherwise seen the big four get more aggressive with their updates (or pricing).
@@MotoJournoKris Yes, they sell every bike they make whether they're competitive or not. If the supply ever returns to normal the Japanese will have some catching up to do. I saw the the new Hornet, 500 Scrambler, and Transalp in videos from EICMA. All fugly if you ask me. Husqvarna is light years ahead in style. I liked the new Suzuki parallel twins though, not so much for their looks but because I believe Suzuki makes great bikes.
@@patriciabourne9046 I do like the look of that new GSX-8S, seems like competition for the Hornet, and I reckon the styling is a bit more inspired compared to the Honda. Guess pricing will be interesting between those two. Countries, especially the EU trying to force EVs may also be taking some of the wind out of new bike development.
I’m late to the party! Great video as always! A couple questions if ya had a second: What’s your take on it’s reliability and maintenance? A neighbor of mine had so many random issues that seem to be quality control related, which scared me away from the bike. I’m based in a large city, so I’m lucky to have someone to work on a bike, but that valve adjustment every 4,650 miles seems brutal, and somewhat expensive. Curious to hear your thoughts on both those issues.
So far I've got a very slow oil leak in the garage after a ride if I go for a real fang, that looks like it may just be at the sump drain bolt, but I'll get it looked at next service. Valve clearance is every 9300 miles from what I can tell, and that's a check which isn't super uncommon as far as mileage. I know some bikes quote much longer figures these days, but in a lot of cases it seems like the shorter check figures are more to avoid liability, with so many people reporting across so many machines they go much longer before needing adjustment.
I'm going to have a more in depth look at the oil leak though and report back, just to see if it's something I can fix, as I feel like getting familiar with the bike is always a good thing.

The manuals can change between year models, so it could be something like that. They also occasionally vary between markets.

When you say $7000 ausi dollars, is that plus dealer mark up, destination charge, tax and registration. I’m here in California looking to snag a deal here in the end of 23 or early 24. I think I’m seeing in US dollars, give or take $4200 plus $1000 prep and dest. Then there would be tax and registration which are a given. I guess it’s the msrp, prep cost and destination cost they play around with.
The prices are a great deal, so much so that I am thinking about not buying private party. ( I had a bad experience on my last Craigslist motorcycle, had to put money into it) So these deals are attractive on new bikes. I’m going to see if I can do $4500 for bike plus $500 destination, no prep or dealer fee and then taxes and reg of course. Last question the 401 or the ktm 390 duke, both in 2023 model. Which would you prefer, I also had a 2015 triumph daytona 675r so I’m interested in your opinion thanks
That was the out the door price I paid, with most of our pricing in Australia the full ride-away price quoted (including all the additional factors you mentioned). Normally they are $8K, so that was $1000 off, which I thought was amazing for a new bike, especially with these specs.
I have the same thoughts about buying private, it's a risk, and I have not had great luck in the past, so getting a great deal on a new bike is really ideal for me.
As for Duke vs 401, I haven't really done enough off-roading to genuinely need the 401 and I could have ridden the Duke along the same tracks a little less comfortably, so I think it's a matter of either/or really. Styling probably being the biggest factor and I do like the Svartpilen there. From memory the Duke only gets the adjustable forks on the newer versions though, so there is that. The dash on the Duke would be a winner though.
The 401 is so much harder to keep clean than the Daytona, but honestly for the price, it's a great machine and I haven't been disappointed. I do miss the triple though.
is this good for 2 up riding? i already have a t120 but i thought i needed a smaller bike to carry the occasional pillion.
I'd guess the T120 would be the better bike of the two by a significant margin. But I'll be testing out the pillion capabilities shortly!
Hey all, for owners of the svart. how have you found the reliability? ie over the course of 1-2 yrs? ie with repair issues or oil leaks etc? i'm thinking of getting one of these, as a new/beginner rider. and ideally wanting smt reliable, economical fuel consumption and easy to ride in an upright position and easy to turn and manevour. I've looked into quite a bit of this bike on various platforms, and have generally found it to fit the bill to what i'm after.
Apart from the very minor oil leak I haven't had any issues yet. There are some known issues, but they don't seem hugely widespread from what I've seen.
Do these run any better than the RC390? Some riders complain of fueling/ECU issues.
There seems to be some shared issues, as they share the same engine and most components. I haven't had any issues so far. I think the way the engine character can be a bit aggressive, which may be behind some of the fueling complaints, but some people do have other issues too from what I've read.

Each bike has some advantages, the 401 is a bit sportier, unusual style, engine tune is a little more aggressive, the 390 ADV is definitely better off-road, more accessories available, more relaxed seating position. The reason I went the Svartpilen 401 was because I could get one for almost $4k less than a 390 ADV at the time here in Australia, including about $1k in run-out discounts for the previous year model.

It's a great machine too, first impressions are that it'll handle the off-road stuff better than the 401.

Nothing noteworthy on the vibes at this stage but it's also not run in, and I haven't done huge mileage. The tank is small but the range is decent if not amazing.

hey, im not even a new rider yet, but Im thinking a lot about getting a svartpillen as my first bike. As i live in Europe, this bike would have the maximum power that i can get for 2 years. The only thing im not sure about this bike is that his value maybe goes down faster than other most used bikes like mt-07.
I think that would tend to be the case honestly. The 390s and 401s do seem to depreciate a bit faster than the Japanese alternatives. Obviously with the MT-07 you're paying a lot more in the first place, so that's worth considering too, where it's a more similar starting point with an R3 or Ninja 400 or similar.
Compare it to an mt-03 and it probably depreciates around the same.

Can you advise where your Svartpilen is assembled from?
Pretty sure all of these are made/assembled in India. Only the earliest models were made in Europe before manufacturing was shifted to the Bajaj factory, which may explain the early pricing and sudden drop later on.

I've been doing a bit of research but haven't seen anything that really stands out. Procraft do one that looks like it'd work, but I'm not that familiar with them. Panniers also seem a popular luggage option.
Yes. I modified a rack from a CBF 125 and installed it on the Svartpilen 401. Bike now has a 40L Givi topbox.

Hi Kris, do you recommend this Svartpilen 401 as a first bike for beginner? I am looking for a commute bike for everyday riding from Macquarie Park to Chatswood. I'm 180cm and about 85kg. Hi mate, you won't go wrong with this bike, it's the best beginner bike on the market. I have start with this bike and same size as you. It has been a year of commuting for work on daily basis, love every minute on the bike.

As William said, it's an ideal beginner option. The seat height is a little taller than some, but it's a great overall package. Honda have a great reputation for reliability that I'm not sure Husqvarna can match, but I'd have said build quality is similar on the surface. You do pay a premium for Honda though.

Hey mate, nice review. Id be interested in your thoughts after owning it for a while. For a first bike, Im deciding on a 401 or a CB400 super four. Both are similar prices second hand but the Honda's have a lot more k's on em.
I'm working on a longer term review now. I still think the 401 is a really solid choice, the loadout is pretty unbeatable and the bike is exceptionally fun to ride. I haven't had any reliability issues, but the bike does leak a few drops of oil between rides at the sump drain bolt. My only other real complaint is they use fairly cheap bolts in non structural areas from what I can see, and if you're really fussy about finish quality, the tank edges are quite rough, and there's other areas that may stand out to you.
I'd guess the CB would have the advantage in the reliability and finish quality, which may be offset by age and mileage, but Honda has a good reputation in this area for a reason. Plus a four-cylinder is great fun, and a very different engine characteristic.
The Honda also has a significantly lower seat height which may be a big factor depending on your height and inseam, however it's a bit heavier too. That normally drops away when riding, and the 401 being taller and carrying weight higher may off-set that.

how about the known downshifting problem/issue ? the bike will stall upon downshifting 2nd to 1st usually
I haven't had any issues like that yet to be honest. From what I've read that's a problem some owners have faced, but not universal, and the solutions have also varied from keeping the revs up, better fuel, all the way to more extensive warranty work, or a piggyback fuel module.
I’m a beginner rider and tossing up between the Kawasaki z400 and the svartpilen. Which do you think best suits beginners?
I'd say the Z400 is going to be slightly more beginner friendly, especially for shorter riders, due to the lower seat height. The Svartpilen has a taller seat and the handling is more aggressive in comparison. There's a bit of subjectivity on what you prefer there. If you can get both feet down flat on both bikes, even the seat height is likely to not be a major consideration.

I tend to think this is quite a compact bike, but also fairly tall, I think you'd be ok as long as you're not feeling cramped at the knee under the tank.

They should be available in the US, but there is still supply issues and in some cases the smaller capacity machines seem to get a bit less love in your market.

7000 AUS OTR is around 4700 US. I just paid 7600 US OTR for a 2022 Vitpilen 401. Amazing that there were leftover Svarts in Australia. There are absolutely none available in the US. BTW I didn't get a Vit because I couldn't get a Svart. I got a Vit because I wanted a Vit. There are people changing out the top triple clamp of the Vit with one that has risers for a riser bar. It may be that they wanted a Svart but there were none to be had.
I'd heard people can't get them in the US, but didn't realise the supply was that limited. Normal OTR RRP is about $1000 AUD on top of that, which makes it a little closer. Is that the normal price or has it been pushed up quite a bit? I've heard from Americans in the YN discord that when demand is tight some bikes sell way above normal pricing, which I've never seen here in Australia.
They seem to be quite a few through and sold at my local dealer. I was tempted by the Vitpilen, but thought I'd go the more relaxed bike with the dual purpose tyres. The cafe racer theme is really cool.
@@MotoJournoKris I paid $700 over the list price of $5399 US, so $6199. But, I got that much or more extra when I sold my 2019 CB300R because of the sellers market here. Markups on bikes and cars is a custom in the US when the supply is tight. I'm amazed it's not that way in Australia. There's no dirt to ride in the vicinity of Malibu but there is an abundance of tight, twisty canyon roads.

They had the new model when I picked mine up, but the discount on the MY21 was a lot more attractive. If there was significant changes or improvements it may have been a different story.
Hi when you buy it there was a quickshifter ready to go ?
They call it an 'easy shift sensor' which allows clutchless shifts. It's not as smooth as a traditional quickshifter, but it does the job.

I didn't like the 17" rims. Only one company makes off road tires for it, and they are not that aggressive. 17" was primarily used on sport bikes.
Yea, at the end of the day it's really a road bike with dual-sport tyres, however for basic off-roading that should be enough for some riders. I think for those who want better off-road cred, it's worth looking at something more specific for it. The 390 ADV takes things up a notch in that regard, with a 19 inch front and various other more off-road specific features.
@@MotoJournoKris I looked at that 390 adventure. It weighs as much as my Suzuki DR650. I was shopping for an updated version of my Yamaha XT225 which weighs about 250 lb. I may wait for Honda to ship their new CRF300LS. It has a 32" seat height. More CC than the Yamaha XT250.
@@DannyB-cs9vx Yea I think the 390 ADV was designed for commuters/touring with a small nod to light ADV more than anything. The CRF300L/Rally seems a better proposition if you want lighter and better off-road. Sad there's not more competition for it really, you'd think if anyone was going to introduce something similar, it'd be KTM! But I guess they have their more hardcore offroaders.

I'd definitely say so, as it handles way more than that two-up in my experience, but you'll want to tweak the rear preload for sure.
I own one and most duke 390 aftermarket parts will fit this bike as they are the same bike essentially just dressed up in a different costume
I'll have to test that out, I kind of assumed it would be the case but a lot of accessories show limited compatibility!
Good luck with reliability. I wouldn't touch a KTM with a 10foot pole.

Do you know your inseam length? That's normally the best comparison point for reaching the ground. Have you tried any other bikes for a point of comparison.

Zero SR/F - tippy toe the ground
Benelli tnt135 - tip toe to slight ball of foot
Grom - flat foot
883 sportster - flat foot
Bintelli beast - flat foot
Honda rebel 250 - flat foot
Honda rebel 1100 DCT - flat foot
Honda navi - balls of feet touch ground

@@lostintheclouds8719 Definitely worth checking out as many as you can. The SR/F and Benelli are around the 780-790 mm seat height from what I can see, where the Svartpilen is an extra 45 mm or so on top of that, which is pretty significant. There can be some variance with the width of the bike, to just how manageable the seat height is, but I think you'd probably only be tip-toe if you're shifted right across the seat to one side, to get that foot down. I think there's a lowering kit which may lower the bike by 25 mm or so, but that'll remain quite a bit taller than the tallest of the bikes you've mentioned.

The lowering kit I read I think said 1/4-1/2 inch it could lower… ugh… why do they make these things so high - it’s so frustrating
@@lostintheclouds8719 With all the bikes sharing the same chassis, it's a bit of a shared issue being so tall. Most of the options from other companies tend to keep it quite a bit lower, like below 800 mm, as low as 785 or so, unless you go to a cruiser, where they'll go lower still.

I had a BMW g650 with a case on the back and that was a nice backrest for my ladies. I always try to think of their comfort and safety! That might be the only thing keeping me from a 401 or the 701 svart

As I read this, and thank you for all the great breakdown, I'm looking at the Honda cb500x and it looks like there are some nice options for top case and side cases. The top case being a nice backrest for a guest.
I scored a 2011 tiger 800 xc with so many upgrades! Paid 6k it has 24k miles. I love it . I still want a small bike but I can't have everything!
