Saw RC in Charlottesville two weeks ago (2/17/24). Being 70 now, I was willing to cut him some slack. OMG was I wrong! His voice was as good as ever, his band was phenomenal, and his guitar skills mesmorized me for two hours straight.
Pugh's Hammond is a custom built Portabilization of an authentic B3 done by the late Bill Beer of Keyboard Products who did organs for Santana, Fleetwood Mac and others. Sadly, Bill died in the mid 1990's. The Leslie Speaker is also one that Bill high powered with custom amp and JBL speakers. Bob Schleicher of Electronic Instrument Services in Oakland now builds a similar B3 chop as they are called. Bob maintains Santana's Beer chop.
Bill Beer died in 1999. He was very protective of his work and didn't share anything with anyone. He even sanded off the labels and identification numbers from all the parts he used to build those customized electric circuits for Hammonds and Leslies. In retrospective, if his gadgets were so good then why didn't he protect them legally/officially by writing a patent? One thing though is forgotten very often: Bill would recalibrate the Hammonds in order to make them fit to the Leslies he modified which is a huge effort that is quite debatable. My guess is that the solid state bi-amp didn't sound right for him on its own with those high-power JBL speakers, no matter what he tried, which is why he had to change what was coming from the organ. Then why didn't he just build a huge tube amp instead of fooling around within the organ? It seems weird ...
Robert Cray and his band are amazing. Saw them at the Belly Up in Solana Beach on Dec. 4th and they ripped. Checkout my videos from the show at smoothtubeforyou
Saw Robert Cray band on Saturday and they did Not play this song :-( ...I believe it was because Jim was shaking his right hand after every song..the keyboard player and being featured in this song, woulda caused him some serious pain. My loss, but can't say a bad thing, cuz everything was FABULOUS and live is better...
i wish rc might join w/ dave mason who sings gloriously at 70 (or older?) and i'd pay big bucks for a show like that. bobby keys inglorious bastards would be golden w/ cray too. the keys are neat but personnel isn't listed up top. i like the keyboard player to.
What Key Board is this, sounds like a B3 or M3 . Great Stuff. Thanks, We will be seeing Robert perform this Friday. It will be fun and a great pleasure. Thanks for your post.
This is, definitely, a big Hammond organ, a console from the B3 "family"; not a small M3 spinet. Since this organ was obviously chopped (customised), and put into a portable case, it is impossible to tell if it was a former B3, C3, A100, RT3 or D100. All of these organ models are basically the same instrument with a different case, and that's why they're generically called 'B3s'. Cheers!
The better he gets, the less people listen to him. If God posted a UA-cam video, say of Himself playing the guitar, I think it would have maybe 6 hits and 4 likes. Fuck me.
Why is the video so narrow? I had a similar effect some time ago, when I was recording on a video cam. Are there ways to stretch thevideo to "normal" aspect ratio?
