    Hmm.. Of course it's only my personal opinion but such a Challenge only makes sense to me if everyone prices their parts for what it would cost them if they had to source each part right now. Otherwise it's not relatable. Discounting prices based on time of use and deals you made years back just isn't representative if the goal is to show what bike can be built (by anyone) with 120 USD. However this is just a technicality and I do appreciate the budget friendly approach as well as all of your videos. Thanks you for the time you're dedicating to this channel!

      Free cause I have it doesn’t count mate, give it a cost if it didn’t come with the bike. Thus the challenge!

      I think it's fair enough. If I'm building a cheap bike it happens over time, I get parts when they're cheap. If you just splurge in one go, it could be a cheap bike, but it'll be crap.

    • @franzgustavgauner5601
      @franzgustavgauner5601 6 місяців тому

      Yeah I get what you are saying. I do the same thing. Always looking for parts online and making good deals along the way. For the sake of a challenge I do however still think that this approach is not representative since it could give someone who is new to the whole bike building thing the impression that he or she can build a bike like the one in the video for 120 USD which is not possible if you have to source all the parts instead of being able to discount used parts from your home inventory. 200 USD would have been a realistic and relatable target in my opinion. @@andysmith1968

    You did a beautiful job with the cleanup. I had my worries from the outset about whether the old BB would work with a sensible-sized chainring. Those bars look glorious 😅
    A saddle and tyres would be the first upgrades I’d make to a newly-acquired bike, so I agree with others who recommend going cheap on those to keep on budget.

  • @pierrelabbe9621
    @pierrelabbe9621 6 місяців тому +2

    If I were you, I'd cheap out on anything but the tires and saddle. Maybe see if there's a cheap Superstore bike somebody just wants to get rid of off the side of the road - that could be a parts donor.
    Also, I run a pretty simple spreadsheet of my bike parts, just a basic list of what it is and how I got it/how much I got it for. That might help keeping track of costs for stuff like this. The hardest part is starting it up tbh.

    • @1972hermanoben
      @1972hermanoben 6 місяців тому

      I like the idea of a parts spreadsheet! A new means of tinkering with bikes but it looks to anyone else as if you’re working on the household budget 😂

    • @pierrelabbe9621

      @@1972hermanoben There's also that spreadsheet, and the spreadsheet for batches of homebrew that I keep running for stuff that I learn to carry forward.
      As silly as it is, it's been a tool that works for me.

    Nice content! I like the tyres and purple chain ring, they give personality to the bike. You could open a side-business where people bring you their old bike and you update it. It's a shame I live in Spain. If was was close to London I would hire you to update my 2003 MTB from BH to a modern gravel/conmute bike. Enjoy the rides!

    I just serviced a Shimano Parallax that had no prior service. The grease was caked and dried in the dust cap. It looked like a burnt Cashew. It made a thump as it hit the trash.

    Think my comment might have got hit by the spam filter so I’m not going to mention that online auction site but…. Tredz regularly sell the standard Spoon for £20+ so £10 for a used one is fair, although if you look on that online auction site used ones sometimes sell for more than Tredz 😂

    I just bought a charge spoon ltd edition for £14. Those brown ones were about £12 from Tredz last week. So you can probably chop that to around £6 seconds hand? But then, you're UA-cam famous so that charge brings it up to at least £6.50 £7

    I bought one of them there shiney Sunrace cassettes for a build. It didn't like the 1990 Shimano SIS system so ended up putting it on a road bike with down tube manual gear levers instead 😪
    Are you allowed to sell off the various parts that came with the bike to offset the cost?

    Great channel! I’m building a bike along with you guys. My local shops that deal in second hand parts are $5-$10 a saddle. I like buying dirt cheap thrift store bikes and scavenging parts as well. Sometimes a department store or other low quality bike can yield tires, pedals, brakes, levers etc. and the whole bike cost $20. Also any credit given for for parts taken off and resold from the original bike?

    I would put the saddle at $5 with all it's use etc. i think my local co-op sells old saddles for $5 US, so that's something like £3 right?

  • @johnnydoe66
    @johnnydoe66 6 місяців тому

    Personally, I think most used tires are over priced, so truthfully the Bonkers might be really worth £10 each since they have worn tread and they're over a year old. I think the rules should allow some leeway, especially if you are using parts you already own and have previously used....they shouldn't be part of the price.

    • @trailsnail918
      @trailsnail918 6 місяців тому

      I agree but I think the idea is to show that even if you have nothing; no used parts or things laying around or given to you by a friend, you can still get rolling for a great price and a little bit of work

      I’d love to be able to sell rusty “vintage” bikes for $1,000 but that’s never gunna happen nor it should.
      The whole point of this series is about building something in a budget trying my best to show how you can too.
      I will sell this bike as it’s a little small for me but I’d be lucky to get more than £200. Which I’m very happy with, wouldn’t want more.
      Thanks for the comment, this has given me a good opportunity to talk about this in the next episode.
