I love 1d4chan's description for a Titan, "Imagine a city that hates you. Now give it city leveling weapons and legs to walk on, then fill it with more things that hate you. You have a rough idea of a Titan."

People looking for life changing and heart warming get this video because they didn't know auto play was on. They are going to be traumatized. Which will be easier for the inquisitors to find them.
So I take it from the Audio that Titans are : Ridiculously Ridiculous, Rarely Relative, Massively massive, Outrageously outrageous, Extremely Approximate, Unusually Usual, Absurdly Ludicrous, and Virtually Religious.
+Ross Kliebenstein Nothing. The MOMENT even _one_ member of the Imperium attempts to understand technology, some red-robed asshat will alert the rest of the red-robed asshats and the order of red-robed asshats will immediately come the fuck over and fuck their shit up.
I'm hoping to see VR technology advance by leaps and bounds in the coming years. Maybe when I'm old and grey, we'll see VR advanced enough to justify a first-person Titan-based game. I would sell just about everything I own for that experience.
Technically it's already possible, and there are games that have individual elements needed to realize it. The biggest issue right now is the GPU processing power to make it look at least somewhat realistic. Battlefields with hundreds if not thousands of units in VR are a really bad idea...
Titans make assault class mech look little little bitchs. Even 100 Ton assault mechs are only what 15 meters tall so 45 feet tall. That's the best battletech has to offer. And I love battletech it was my First love. After all I'm a star Commander
well i couldnt have said it any better, little bitches in comparison,. even the smallest titan (a Warhound) is about as tall as Assault Mech, and manyfold its weight and power, it would be like a pitbull playing with its favourit toy >_
As Battlemechs often hide between 3 story buildings, even the smallest Titan is close to twice its size. That is why Titans can be boarded, while a Battletech universe Mech is a single pilot vehicle, and simply put there is nowhere to board internally. Even a Battletech pilot himself has to climb to the cockpit externally. It is why I laugh at the "who is best" because the universe of W40 is already has collapsed, while the star wars, Star trek, and such universes the main goal of the story is the stopping of these collapses. Even Battletech is based in a universe where most of the population are not in danger of being eaten alive. A medium sized Titan he lists at 25-30 meters tall, so in the vicinity of 100 foot tall. Battlemechs are tanks, fighting among themselves. Titans are walking buildings, fighting against fortresses or other Titans themselves. An Imperator Titan is literally a small town, roughly the same area as the Vatican itself.
thats also why the size measure in WH40k make no sense to me, a Imperator cant be "only" 150-200 meters tall when it carries a garrison in each shin and fields weapons that can level entire cities with ease. even a Warhound would theoreticaly have alot more size than 25-30 meters given they can play football with the heaviest and biggest tanks if they want to, and those are basicaly the size of a not to small family house. from how i see it, if theres several tank squadrons (even if its just the "small" Leman Russ from the guard) stationed inside an Imperators shin bastion, or up to a full Astartes Chapter with Wargear, there must be enough room to even store a Lance of Heavy/Assault mechs or even more, and then the hight of 100m doesnt add up at all anymore

I'm surprised that, when you got to Psi-Titans, there was no mention of the fact that the Princeps of the Titan, an already uncommon individual at the best of times, must also be a psychic blank. And that, when Sanguinius had an encounter with one of these things and saw it silently extinguish the souls of everything within a several kilometer radius, he promptly shat his Primarch pants, took his Blood Angels, and got the fuck off the planet that thing was on as fast as Primarchly possible. Now that... is quite the achievement. When you can get a Primarch to say "I fear no man, but that THING, it scares me," you have to know that you've gone possibly a bit... too far. It would probably not be a hyperbole to say that Psi-Titans are nothing less than Culexus Assassins in Titan form.
Not sure which HH or 40K novel/book it was in, but an Imperator Titan making ground-fall via drop-pod certainly left a vivid image in my mind. Anything that survives the initial cataclysmic collision/landing, doesn't survive much longer when the hab-block tall Raping-Death machine unleashes it's weaponry that's only out-matched by fire-power on battle-barges and other large void-ships! That said, did I read somewhere that there are some super-psykers that can crack titans in half with warp powers?!
+GothaBillsAndDeath Really a lot of the books have kind of hyped them up to insane levels, the idea of a Chapter based entirely around psykers who hunt daemons for the inquisition is a fine concept. It's just when incompetents are asked to write the fluff that they get obnoxious (Draigo being a prime example).
GothaBillsAndDeath But than they'd be the SPIRITUAL LIEGE of all other chapters who they'd all wish to emulate! They could walk up to daemon princes and say "I must break you!"
Look at horizon wars, able to have fast play battle tech in essence. No set types, rather choose the size and there are x no. Points to allocate to movement, firepower etc.
I always wanted to play epic 40k sooo badly as a kid, fielding tank battalions and legions and titan battle groups! what a awesome game that sounds like! If GW decided to reboot epic table top today I would be all over that like a rash!
The imperium got some cool shit but all the space marines and stuff are all trendy and everyone blindly thinks there the best I think of them as the pop music of war hammer now, especially the ultra marines. There are a few exceptions though like dark Angels and space wolves.
So I take it the Grey Knights are a matter of controversy since I've heard other people describe them as the most popular and most impressive yadda yadda yadda.
I would reccomend they Grey Knights Omnibus book written by Ben Counter. It is actually quite good and is not tainted by Matt Ward, the person who fucked up the Grey Knights.
What I found was the problems came from top down executive decisions to redesign the product around the marketing technique of dumbing everything down to appeal to new customers. Marketing 101 dictates that everything your existing customers love about a product are what is keeping new customers from embracing it. Marketing only cares about bringing in new customers as retaining existing customers can't be linked to a marketing campaign. Matt Ward's name was put on the products as part of basic branding, even though he was at best an implementation team leader, and the results were very much the product of marketing department product redesign. In fact it's probably the most successful example of such marketing techniques. Usually when marketing department is allowed to redesign a product this completely they end up completely destroying the company.
@@Troglodytarum Thats not what I mean. They think the Dangers of the warp like deamons are just Superstition and half Trues the Imperium is telling the Tau to Prevent them from Warptravel.I know that the warp is technically created by the Feelings and also Superstition of humans and other species but the Thing itself is anything but that it is a real danger and the Tau think that is just some Kind of Overstatement.
Considering they are actively prohibited to actually invent new technologies (which is absolutely stupid, by the way), the Mechanicus should be more careful with how they keep their blueprints, less they'll forget how to make a knife (again)
SSVjoker it is absolutely stupid, but if your organization of tech lovers was born from a galactic scale civilization ending event that sent humanity back to the literal dark ages in many cases, and brought an end to the mightiest human civilization ever, and said event was caused by unrestrained use and development of technology, I think it’s understandable that you’d be cautious around technology ^^

MutatedPixelation Its ok that theyre OP but their writing is so damn bad that they even rip off samuari jack at one point, see for yourself: 1d4chan.org/wiki/Kaldor_Draigo all we can do is blame MATT WARRRRRRD the 5th chaos god
+MutatedPixelation i don't know how they are today, but like 9-10 years ago they were not overpowered at all. The cost of every unit compared to how they perform was ridiculously high, like 28pts each basic grey knight, and it wasn't specially hard to kill honestly, toughness 4, 1 wound and 3+ armor save just like any other space marine out there. They tried to justify the point price making them significantly better at close combat, usually giving them a weapon skill of 5, 2 attacks and strenght 6, and a storm bolter for a better ranged performance but still, they were so few and "easy" to kill that against any semi-decent ranged focused army they were fucking doomed from the start. I have more criticism towards their rules back then but i will shut up for now. PS: I would like to hear from arch why do he hate their lore so much, i didn't think it was not even half bad back in the day, a special force composed by some of the best of the best marines in the galaxy dedicated to exterminate deamons within and without the imperium, i like it.
Ah yeah the great Titans of the Imperium, even the Warhound is a nearly unstoppable force... until a pack of four of them met a single flight of Tau Anti-Armour fighters and were sent packing. Turns out being a 25-Meter high bullseye without any place to run or hide isn't the best of ideas.
You know, I'd actually like to see a lore video dedicated to technology in the imperium, and the psychology behind the practices that are done with them. I've read some interesting threads about the subject that I, being the schmuck I am, cannot recall or cite at the moment. They went into what lead to the "culture" built around machines, and why you could *not* solve all of the imperium' problems with one person with common sense and a rudimentary understanding of technology and mechanics. I had a great time reading them, and I think such a thing would make a good video. (though it would definitely be hard, given how vague the subject is) ... And I should probably be saying this on a video that isn't 7 months old if I actually want to get noticed. Ah well.
31:10 This makes me think of how certain people can literally become addicted to warfare, getting high from the adrenaline of fighting in a war and how they hit a slump when they are not actively fighting. It's quite an interesting and scary prospect, getting so coked up on risking your life on the battlefield that pretty much everything else just becomes meh due to those parts of the brain being dulled.

It was so cool because as I put my car in park after having pulled up to work, the video ended with "have a good day". These lore videos are fuckin phenomenal arch
I'd like a rough number on how many titans of each class the imperium has at its disposal in 999M41 if it can be established, especially Emperor class titans as I vaguely remember reading that those are basically impossible to produce at that point. Also I'm confused about the dimensions of titans. You mentioned Emperor titans being up to 150 meters high but a quick glance at the lexicanum gives a number of roughly 50 metes. Yes, both the Prince of Wales and the Yamato were battleships but such an immense discrepancy in dimensions within a single class would be as if the Musashi was 3 times as large as the Yamato at which point it makes no sense to call it the same class.
+Bernd Berndsen old vs new fluff, over the course of 40k Titans have varied in size from several hundred meters to 40-50, i used the "dictionary definition" from the old source books but in the Horus books fks it's closer to 50m
+Meta Melcan I would think that they were at least inspired by the western mech designs of the time, which would be the same place that WH40k drew inspiration from. Only the earlier of the Mechwarriors were inspired by Japanese mecha (easily seen by the Valkyrie mechs from Macross). They took a few steps back from those after a while.
I do t mind the grey knights in older lore, I actually liked them...until Matt ward fucking ruined them with his bs. I think some thing are starting to be fixed now at least. Btw what's your opinion on the new skitarii/mechanicus stuff arch?

John Feliciano ohhh that! my friend is a considerable list of reasons! ill get to it eventually in a video, rage videos do get all the views after all ;)
I think another important option available to chaos and the most likely to actually result in gaining a titan is stealing one from the imperium a daunting task but definitely possible especially given chaos having an abundance of combat man power and a shortage of real space construction facilities.
So wait. The Mechanicus believe that any and all Artificial Intelligence is evil. But they also believe that each and every machine has some kind of sentient spirit within it. A, perhaps, INTELLIGENT spirit. Anyone else see the problem here?
+atreides213 I think you're looking at it wrong, A.I.'s can become self aware and whatnot, and change and do different things rather than what it's designed to do, machine spirits are not self aware, or self aware to the same degree as a machine spirit and can't really change what it does like an A.I. I think that's the distinction. Pretty small line between the two but yeah that's what i think.
+Skepsis Rollins Perhaps it's just programmed with random behaviors, while in reality being a really complex computer program rather than a digital mind. Although, their behavior is awfully suspicious, if you ask me. Suspicious enough to be considered an A.I or maybe even... human, in a way.
+atreides213 The Mechanicus' concept of machine spirits is a religious one with little to no evidence backing it up. It's comparable to the religious beliefs of certain cultures in nature guardians/spirits but rather than the spirits being in nature they are in anything mechanical.
kingkong381 in a lot of the books a lot of machines, especially ships have their machine spirits explained in a way that makes it seem real. It makes this debate a lot more complicated.
+atreides213 This is just speculation but I see it as machine spirits being natural entities whereas A.I.'s are something more akin to Frankenstein's monster. It's a perversion of the natural order, it has no 'machine soul'. It's the technological equivalent of necromancy.
As a note on the Warhound, IIRC it's not a match for armour squadrons; it carries roughly the same weapons as Baneblade variants; the Vulcan cannon on the one pictured at 42:20 is also mounted to Macharius heavy tanks, which are somewhat smaller than a Baneblade.
First of all it's Castigator and not Castigor. Castigator Titan was an original STC titan from the dark age of technology that was buried in a mechanicum world's surface, and tainted by the warp when the renegade mechanicus plunged the planet into a warp plunge. It was destroyed by Justicar Alaric in Ben Counter's Dark Mechanicum.
The Titan's avatar was destroyed by Justicar Alaric which by that point was basically a greater daemon, which while difficult is dooable. The Titan itself was destroyed by a chaos battleship. Arch went a little bit but hurt over the Grey Knights "destroying" the titan when they didn't.
“ There are things you can’t fight like acts of god. You see a hurricane coming and you get out the way but in a titan you can fight the hurricane, you can win. “
A Reaver or Warhound class Titan is about the same size as the machines in Pacific Rim... But without the motivation to mount the same classes of weapons. If they expand that storyline, it would be the closest we have gotten so far to a W40k movie.
As I was listening to the rants about the Grey Knights I couldn't help but realize "Wow some one hates a space marine chapter more than the Ultra Marines"....Seriously though the blue smurfs seem to get all the good stuff in the lore.
Feedback: You should lower or remove the background music IMO. It seems to make the video more difficult to hear and understand, and gives it a too monotonous pace.
But 45 mins minimum of the same looped track in the background... I´d much rather just hear Arch. Maybe lowering it would help. I´m not a native English-speaker, and I find it kind of difficult to catch everything having the song in my mind during the whole video. It´s up to Arch, tough.
+Rubén Vivo I disagree personally, I like the tracks he chooses and would like to see them stay. HOWEVER if he can use all his tracks and sort them together so its not just one track per vid that would be fine I think.
yo Arch, I really enjoy your lore videos. your voice is perfect for doing this kind of thing, sounds like a mix of norway, britain, and nigel thornberry. anyway, for people new to 40k like me, your videos are valuable wealths of knowledge. thanks man.

What I dislike about the lore changes is that it creates a huge gap between the warlord and emperor titan classes. With a warlord being a mere 35 meters tall at best, and an emperor class being at least 150 meters. Why aren't there any 70 or 80 meter tall titan classes?
Bryce Baker no, the emperor class=imperator class it's just low vs. high gothic spelling. Just like they put "Astra Militarum" (high gothic) on the 7th ed "Imperial Guard" (low gothic) codex
Speaking as someone who's favourite chapters have been Ultramarines (literally only because they are Blue Space Romans) and Grey Knights since 2nd edition, and especially 3rd for Grey Knights, all I have to say is Fuck Matt Ward. The only fluff he ever wrote that I actually liked was the idea behind the Newcrons, and that's only because it lets people personalize their Necron armies in a lore friendly way, since beforehand the only way you could do it was paint them in the specific color of the dirt they crawled out of, even Tyranids could have more distinct character between armies than oldcrons. I basically ignore any ultramarine and grey knight fluff after 4th edition. Though I've heard graham mcneill and the horus heresy books do a good job making them well rounded characters, I have yet to read those myself.
Very cool stuff... however, one tihng I will point out... German U Boat Wolfpacks were far from informal groups, in reality they were very tightly controlled by the BdU (Befehlshaber der Unterseeboot.... apologies to any Germans if I spelt it incorrectly!), for the majority of the war this was our old friend Admiral Doenitz. The U Boat packs were sent out into areas the Kreigsmarine knew Convoys were operating due to Sigint, they would spread out and converge upon the U Boat that spotted the convoy. The locations of known convoys was actually radiod to the U Boats in order to facilitate this task... This in fact is one of the ways they were eventually defeated, with the invention of Huffduff (High Frequency Direction Finding) and better surface radar, as wel as the invention of better anti submarine weaponry (such as the hedgehog) and better tactics such as Hunter Killer groups led by an Escort Carrier and consisting of several dedicated ASW Corvettes and Destroyers. Other than that relatively minor error though, interesting, makes me think about dusting off my old Nid army.
+Darudeen yes...dushbags. if 40k end times ragnarök all primarch that lives in a glory's death ever happens...plz GW let the space wolf launch a exterminatus on grey knight base and make so that it works (fore in the fluff ti would not work) becuase the knigh whanted to exterminate fenrirs and that irony is so so sweat..and ofcoures let i dont know russ and (the name escapes me) dark angles primarch have duels like drinking, brawling, shoting jousting and all that shit just fore the epic rivalry. and dont make it like fantasy....but now i am off the point.
Uncle Skull,14'th Panonian Regiment of the Imperial Guard well if the end is coming why not go full on revenge and fluff fan servise..like i dont say destroy the knights in every day 40k i say wipe them out fore irony sake at the end of all things...fore whats the point in not doing it if they are all going to lose anyway.
+Darudeen Yes and no. The Grey Knights have been in 40k lore for a long time but their most recent army books and lore were written by Matt Ward. Now, I can't judge the gameplay aspects of his army books as I've played very little of the tabletop game over the years, but I've been told that the army rules he writes are too overpowered. But when it comes to lore Ward is a fucking plague on Warhammer 40k. He takes otherwise decent factions and ruins them by turning them into ludicrous, over the top, parodies of what they ought to be. Among Ward's victims are the Ultramarines, the Grey Knights and the Blood Angels.
Actually the elder have a "titian" that is powered by the soul of a dead family member (your twin) which does give them synchronization, I think arch talks about it in his Non- Imperial titan vid.
+Matthew Chirino Oh yeah, I read about that on TvTropes a few days ago. The site explicitly said it was a reference to NGE and, after reading the Wraithknight entry on the wh40k wiki, it's hard to disagree.

I'm hoping to see VR technology advance by leaps and bounds in the coming years. Maybe when I'm old and grey, we'll see VR advanced enough to justify a first-person Titan-based game. I would sell just about everything I own for that experience.
+Nicholas Wright that would indeed be quite the thing!
Technically it's already possible, and there are games that have individual elements needed to realize it. The biggest issue right now is the GPU processing power to make it look at least somewhat realistic. Battlefields with hundreds if not thousands of units in VR are a really bad idea...
if that ever happens (hopefully in my lifetime still >_
So the Titans are Battlemechs, powered by Magic, Psychic Power, and whatever passes for Mountain Dew in the 41st Millennium.

He never even mentioned Imperiator Our class Titans.
In 40k, there's always a bigger weapon ;).
Magnus was able to destroy eldar titans with his powers, i'd guess that the emperor would be too
Psychic powers have no real upper limit when it involves insane story-character Psykers as far as the destruction goes that they can bring.

+darkblood626 They're fun in concept given old fantasy norms on binding demons, but god did Matt Ward hit them over the head with his fanboyhammer.

How cool would it be to have a mechwarrior type Titan game, or a modern epic 40k game?
hell yeah
On mobile phones there is such warhammer 40k games
Look at horizon wars, able to have fast play battle tech in essence. No set types, rather choose the size and there are x no. Points to allocate to movement, firepower etc.
I always wanted to play epic 40k sooo badly as a kid, fielding tank battalions and legions and titan battle groups! what a awesome game that sounds like! If GW decided to reboot epic table top today I would be all over that like a rash!

I am new to Warhammer, and new to the lore. BUT HOLY FUCKING SHIT I NEVER KNEW HOW METAL THIS SHIT IS!
Chaos and orks are the most metal
The imperium got some cool shit but all the space marines and stuff are all trendy and everyone blindly thinks there the best I think of them as the pop music of war hammer now, especially the ultra marines. There are a few exceptions though like dark Angels and space wolves.
So I take it the Grey Knights are a matter of controversy since I've heard other people describe them as the most popular and most impressive yadda yadda yadda.
Okay I looked it up. Quiet the rabbit hole.

+Alexander Stanfield ....but what about Malal?
Hey Arch just wanted to thank you for all your efforts in putting these together for us, I appreciate it.
Ah yeah the great Titans of the Imperium, even the Warhound is a nearly unstoppable force... until a pack of four of them met a single flight of Tau Anti-Armour fighters and were sent packing.

Damn your audio quality really improved over the years. It sounds like you are recording this on a toy microphone
It's quite an interesting and scary prospect, getting so coked up on risking your life on the battlefield that pretty much everything else just becomes meh due to those parts of the brain being dulled.
i know its technicly defunked but id love to see a vid on space warfare in the 40k universe i have been reading some of the Hours heresy books and scae or as they call it void warfare is there in the background

+Arch Warhammer were the developers of Mechwarrior inspired by the games workshop titans or is it a coincidence that they look similar
+Meta Melcan Battletech is older, and it was inspired by Japanese mecha.
I figured it was of course but I con see uncanny similarities to the mechs in Mech warrior

The Warhammer and 40k lore is simply awesome. There is so much interesting stuff. Thanks Arch.
It's comparable to the religious beliefs of certain cultures in nature guardians/spirits but rather than the spirits being in nature they are in anything mechanical.
kingkong381
in a lot of the books a lot of machines, especially ships have their machine spirits explained in a way that makes it seem real. It makes this debate a lot more complicated.
+atreides213
This is just speculation but I see it as machine spirits being natural entities whereas A.I.'s are something more akin to Frankenstein's monster.
Sorry, Vulkan Mega Bolter
John Henry III well they did. when the daemon construct died the titan began to lose it's form.
“ There are things you can’t fight like acts of god. You see a hurricane coming and you get out the way but in a titan you can fight the hurricane, you can win. “
Pacific Rim 40K
A Reaver or Warhound class Titan is about the same size as the machines in Pacific Rim... But without the motivation to mount the same classes of weapons. If they expand that storyline, it would be the closest we have gotten so far to a W40k movie.
I love your stuff so much. I am just listening to all of it on a playlist until there is no more.

What I dislike about the lore changes is that it creates a huge gap between the warlord and emperor titan classes. With a warlord being a mere 35 meters tall at best, and an emperor class being at least 150 meters. Why aren't there any 70 or 80 meter tall titan classes?

maybe, but i fail to see how a 50 meter titan is "scary". It's to damn short. Now 150 i can see.

Bryce Baker no, the emperor class=imperator class it's just low vs. high gothic spelling. Just like they put "Astra Militarum" (high gothic) on the 7th ed "Imperial Guard" (low gothic) codex

Thank you for this, I am just getting into all this. It's so cool
How appropriate that the music used throughout this video is "Crusade" from Kevin MacLeod (in case anyone was wondering).

Quieter background music brother.
I really like your channel :) I hope this grows well
So, Grey Knights are basicly "The End Times" of 40k?
+Darudeen Comparing the 2 is like comparing Slaanesh to THE GOD EMPEROR OF MANKIND
+The Artist Of War Yeaaah, lets wipe out the Imperiums best weapon against daemons, that seems like a GREAT idea!
God, 47000 subscribers in 9months good job Arch!
These Titans seem a lot like EVA Units from NGE, they seem to have personalities of their own and directly link to the pilot.
Nice video, really informative! :D I hope you get around the the spaceships of the 40k universe soon, that would really be awesome!
There is a crew of 10........not thousands.
30:00 So essentially its the same as a Dreadnought, but much bigger, powerful and with a voice in your head ? Sounds like a recipe for mental stability.
55 minutes, eh? Better turn it up to 1.25 speed then. ;)
Thanks, that actually helped alot :)
put speed on 2 and subtitles on and we are good to go
well done.
