I choked up when you shared the story of your father. I lost my father in 2017 and I’m in Los Angeles and he was on the east coast of the states. I was riding my motorcycle across country to see him one last time but I made it half way. (Texas) when I got a call he passed. I too wasn’t there. I’m sure your father and my father understood. Our fathers did so much for us, sacrificed so much, risked everything for us, hid their fears and insecurities from us...maybe it’s an immigrant story. My father was my hero for having the strength and courage to immigrate with a wife and two kids to a new country with no more than a few suitcases and little money. ❤️

I’m so sorry to hear about your father’s passing mate my father past away in 2014 and I still miss him everyday he thought me so much about life in the great outdoors hunting, fishing, camping and the love of dogs R.I.P to all the great fathers out there in the world stay strong mate ❤️

Go for it! Start with short hikes in the woods. Bring snacks and maybe something to boil some water for tea. Find a spot and chill for a little while, then head back on the trail and home. Short sessions in the woods are very satisfying and only take a couple of hours.
Yea! Bruce is awesome! So smart, they make a perfect team, though.

Long haired border collies are my favorite. My BC Beau is the best companion you could ask for! They are super emotional and in-tune to their human partners. Couldn't ask for a better camping and hiking buddy.
This video popped for me again. The part I enjoy seeing again is around 1:24:43 . Seeing the dog sleeping covered with a blanket and the rain downpour in the middle of the night. I wish he had his flashlight handle to light up the tent when the downpour started. I was curious to see the dogs reaction.
He didn't react. Fast asleep.

Camped through the inland remnants of a hurricane once. Not intentionally, I expected rain, but the storm took a turn and brought a lot more excitement my way that I thought it would. It had rained the night before, and my crappy dome tent leaked. So I used a tarp and nylon rope to build a tarp-tent on top of my tent. Just a triangle of tarp, like an old army tent, down to the ground, tied to 2 trees and some heavy duty oversized ground stakes. Wouldn't have been possible if I was backpacking, but I had a trunk full of stuff. When the storm turned our way, everyone else at the camping area ended up huddled together in the brick outhouse enclosure (which smelled lovely). 60+ mph gusts, water coming down in sheets. But the trees around my spot were all of a healthy age and of sound structure, no dead branches, so i went back to my tent. I added extra nylon ropes to the tarp though. Unzipped in the morning, every other tent was ripped apart, or just plain 'missing' with naught but tent stakes left. My friend's tent, or what was left of it, was in a tree 50 ft up (car keys in that tent too hehe). I'll put it this way, I left my frying pan outside the tent cuz it was very greasy after use. A regular home kitchen 12" pan, it blew away. I actually got good sleep in my set-up though.
A heavy tarp & plenty of rope > tents.
My tarp was a single piece 4x5 meter heavy reinforced tarp though, no seams, added grommets myself around the periphery. You could stretch it out and jump up & down on it in the middle and it'd be fine. I'd avoid a multi-piece tarp.
I've come to think of the mass-market backpacking tents as really just being 'mosquito screens'.
Was so surprised you had wild goats! But then you mentioned New Zealand, and I realized you probably don't have wolves and mountain lions :) That would save about a kilo of iron in the camping gear ;) Bruce is quite a cutie :)
As soon as I saw the Hilleberg tent I knew this was a guy that takes his outdoor adventures seriously...

Man, this guy knows how to live. Not exactly ultra-lite though. That pack must have weighed 50 pounds for one overnight, but steak, beer a cookstove you could do a seven course meal on--not too shabby. I loved the chair, especially the footprint to keep it from sinking into the soft ground. Thanks for the heads up on that tarp--what a piece of junk. Thanks for posting--just watching the dog was reason enough.
