I like to imagine this is what happened before you show up at the castle in the endgame to find ishiin passed away. That the ministry attempted to take Lord Kuro by force and Ishiin whooped their asses protecting he and Emma before succumbing to illness shortly after.
Idk if you know this, but after you beat the Demon of Hatred, you can go up the stairs and into the building and you'll find an old lady surrounded by corpses of those purple ninjas who invade Ashina Castle. Probably proves that Isshin isn't the only badass geezer in Ashina.

He only won because of the aoe fire attacks which cannot be blocked for reduced or none damage. Im not sure if sword saint isshin has enough aoe attacks that actually deal damage through their guard, he rather has long combos which are deadly if fighting one enemy (since he has to deflect them and deal damage all at once). For a group of enemies, sword saint might be easy to get. But I also could be totally wrong on this.

Swordsaint Isshin first phase is literally the easiest phase in the entire game and second and third arent that difficult either. (although the spear attacks are more difficult due to their range). This is nowhere near realistic, the soulsborne are more realistic with a stamina bar and the "spear / shield" overpowered combo (because it was overpowered in real life). Sekiro fighting is very good indeed, better than the soulsborne? Open to debate... but not realistic, not even a little.

This dude has got to be at least seventy, he probably has TB, I don’t care how legendary he is; there’s no way that this guy could single-handed my fight off an entire army.
