Hello everybody, Having been a Nikon Tech for 7 years, my favorite AF-I lens was the 28-70. Focus hunting can be from the mag strip but also look at the zoom and focus encoders. They are affixed with double sided tape which deteriorates over time. when that happens, the brush tines don't make good contact and the lens "hunts". Also if the lens has ever been dropped or hit, the brush tines can be bent. Of course, clean all the tape off the encoder and also clean the mag strip and both encoders with isopropyl alcohol. If the brush is bent, that's a little bit more tricky because you have to visually image the zoom brush as it moves across the encoder. Also, sorry guys, but if your motor is squeaking, it usually means it's going out. When I left in '96, they were in short supply so I don't know about now. Also a word of caution: if they have been exposed to any kind of moisture habitually, they will squeek and die. Hard, fast rule: SWM'ers(S.W.M.= Silent Wave Motor) do NOt like water. :)
Hello Geoff, I bought a used AF-S 70-300 VR. When it first arrived it was unusable, but I found if I put it down and tried again then it would work properly for a while. Then it started to only be affected at the extremes of zoom so okay in the middle. The more I use it the better it seems to get. Is there something that can cause focus hunting due to lack of use which will clear with use? Cosmetically it looks good with no signs of wear.
Excellent step by step with all the required potential hazards known. I have and continue to follow this video when deal w/35-70D lens..among a few others. Totally happy and appreciate what you do Mike...fixed a few of this and will continue to watch and LEARN...again, I thank you.
thanks for this video. i love this lens so much, this is my workhorse. Can I request that you also do a video on how to disassemble all the lens element because mine's full of dust and it is starting to infest with few fungus. Regards! :)
70-300 or 70-200? Actually that sounds like a similar problem to what I faced. I won't say for sure that it will clear up with use, but it's possible. 3 things to look for are one of the tines of the zoom brush not fully tracking on the zoom encoder, some grease or other debris on the end of the zoom encoder, or the double-faced tape which holds the zoom encoder to the chassis has lost it's grip allowing the encoder to slip out of place. A caution to you though. Unless you are familiar with the construction of the lens do not try any of these fixes yourself. If you can find a demo of someone taking one of these apart first, watch it more than a few times before you try anything. With any lenses there tricks and proceedures that need to be followed. Cheers.
Happy New Year too George :-), I have already made a video about, how to make a "JIS screw driver" you can find it here: ua-cam.com/video/7-fYLh5uet0/v-deo.html Cheers Kenneth
Hi, thank you for your video, you encouraged me to take a try. my first problem is, one scrwew of the four long ones (about 8 min in the video) is very tight and i already ruined the + . do you have any idea how i can drill it out? regards kri
Vh Kent
Hello, I have Nikon AF-S 35mm F1.8G DX lens (3 years old) and recently it started having problem with AF on liveview mode. It keeps hunting or out of focus or front focus but never on spot. However, on viewfinder autofocus is super fast and perfectly on spot. Do you know what could be the issue? I have Nikon D5300 camera and my other two lenses have no such issues.
These lenses are actually very good, but of course they are a bit complicated, and sometimes they also need some clean, lubricating, and maybe adjustment.

Any Ideal where I can order the contatc bridge? can you show the video how to change it? Thanks
Excellent video, thanks. Could we send you an objective to repair? Can you tell us how to get it to him? Happy New Year.
Thank's Jose, but sorry, I have no repair service. Happy New Year
how good are these lens anyway..so problematic in their set up

как скрипел мотор так и скрипит. Смысл этого ремонта? менять нужно мотор,а не протирать полосу авто фокуса.
