I just got back from San Francisco and we did the Alcatraz tour and I left that place even more fascinated then I was before I got there. I'm so glad that you decided to upload this.
I did the night tour recently--it's those city lights that would've driven me crazy, twinkling and taunting, deceivingly close, beckoning. On New Years Eve, yacht clubs would have parties in the bay and the prisoners would listen to laughter and celebrations all night. I'm surprised more people didn't try to escape, I know I would've.
I clicked on this video just because I enjoy the sound of Howard Duff's voice. I saw his performance in Kramer vs. Kramer. Starting at around 6:51, was that Robert Mitchum speaking, or was it just Duff speaking in a very low register? I'm guessing it was the latter. :)
It was closed because it was far more expensive to operate than other prisons (nearly $10 per prisoner per day, as opposed to $3 per prisoner per day at Atlanta), half a century of salt water saturation had severely eroded the buildings, and the bay was being badly polluted by the sewage from the approximately 250 inmates and 60 Bureau of Prisons families on the island.
You're really luck. I'd like to go there again and this time at night. Same here, would have loved to have been there back then. Hope you have lots of fun over there at San Francisco (:
So am I. That's why I got a volunteer gig there. I can go there any time for free and I get to give tours. I also get the keys to the closed areas and get to sleep in the cells when we have overnights.
@iMoviePhil4 Yeah, I just realized that was a dumb question because what would Mitchum be doing there without an introduction? The fact that the two actors sound so uncannily similar at the same time made my question both stupid and valid.
You can also hear the story about how the people escaped in call of duty black ops 2, mob of the dead easter egg. it is really interesting how they escape. dont worry about anything else, just look for the part that they start talking about how the people escaped.
@nikkimoll That's not why they closed, it was too expensive to keep up, it was essentially rotting. So they closed it down. Three people escaped but were never found. That's not why it closed though.
i went there in 2010 and im going back again in a few days!!! its so interesting... i wish i could go back in time and see it.. but im pretty sure its all poopy there :(
I completely agree that the music is AWFUL! Also, this is not a good place for Zombie Apocalypse - Zombies can walk on the ocean floor and climb so they can get to the island easily.
i am 2. the show was based on this story only the real story is that is closed. and every prisonor was replaced. although the show made a whole story around it. its to bad there is no season 2.
my father was their as a tourist, he sad, it's worse to be there! but in holland prison is heaven and in america it's hell, go america, we need to give them a real punishment!
Guy doesn't know his history. "In 1775, a few months before the U.S. Constitution was signed..." Uhh, the U.S. Constitution was signed in 1787. The Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. Also, Prohibition ended in 1933, *before* Alcatraz opened as a prison. He seems to have the attitude that the prisoners of Alcatraz were oppressed men who didn't deserve the inhumane treatment they got. He forgets that these men were murderers and hard criminals who had tried to escape other prisons.
they should make alcatraz an american monument to capitalism, you know, like the statue of liberty is to democracy. either that or tear it down and give it back to the pelicans.
I used to have this documentary on DVD as a kid. I remember I used to watch this all the time! Gosh nostalgia, I tell ya.

Well, one of the reasons it closed is because the harsh Pacific weather blowing in uninterrupted from the ocean decimated the buildings.
hell yeah, can't wait
this is a good video
Bring Alcatraz back! Scares the shit outta people!

The music made this nearly impossible to watch.

It was never proven that they made it across the bay. however it was never proven that they didn't either
almost for the successful escaping of 3 prisoners in 1962.
