She's a good sport, really. Out of the 5 minutes, about 1 min spent talking about being a single parent, and the rest about her appearance and rumors about her getting a "lift" in a particular place. Her masterful handling of all sorts of difficult situations while remaining charming and positive are the source of her true appeal, and that's what shines through.
I love how she's giving a serious interview about serious topics but she still manages to involve a certain degree of humor. Really makes for an entertaining interview.
Funny, intelligent, wise and so beautiful and down to earth. She’s even more beautiful now. I absolutely live watching her. Her travel series are magical... her funny, wise commentary and playful, youthful nature makes her so likeable. She doesn’t try hard to be someone she isn’t. She just seems so comfortable in her own skin at all ages.
What she said about how we perceive beauty and that often times it's just brainwash from the media is so true. I see prettier/more handsome regular women and men than the so called misses xy and sexiest alive all the time and people dont even notice just b/c they're not hyped and famous. She's a real classic beauty though and humble about it.
I've always thought the same thing. Hearing her say it confirms it enough for me. I think the general public starts to worship celebrities they see in print and film.
I do, & always will, love this woman to bits. Not just for the way she did/does look, but because she's just an absolutely wonderful person; classless & unpretentious despite her 'Cheltenham Girls School' accent.
I saw that show years ago. It is very atmospheric. I remember the set of episodes about the ghosts in the train station. And yes, Joanna is ... well ... absolutely fabulous in it and she's a very purdey woman. 😀
I just love Joanna to bits. Really good actress, pretty lady. She's about as presentable and ladylike as any lady that walked Earth (in my opinion, even royals!) ever could attempt to be. And with such amazingly polished diction to show for it.
It's weird but I've been watching Parkinson for 50 years, and yet the more I see of his interviews of women the more condescending I find him. Joanna was superb and so intelligent and articulate.
I think it’s indicative of a different time. I always liked his later career interviews as a female viewer. The show with Dame Edna, Sharon Osborne and Judi Dench is a favorite 😂
The reputation he has was entirely undeserved for half (give or take) of his career. The interview with a young Helen Mirren was appalling. I could not believe what I was seeing from supposed 'gentle old Parky'.
@@hansiesma16 hasn’t he recently said he was an alcoholic back in the day? Maybe that’s why he was coming across in a bad way. In the later years I always thought he sounded genuinely interested in his guests.
Joanna still is beautiful, all the way through to her heart and soul. She's a wonderful woman. I saw her completely disarm Clive Anderson on his show many years ago, he completely gave up his point-scoring tactics to just listen attentively to the intelligent, thoughtful woman he suddenly found she was. She did the same thing on the radio to Mark Lawson, by the end of the interview you could almost hear the puddle of adoration he had turned into dripping off his seat onto the floor.
So elegant. So charming and beautiful. So intelligent and witty. So kind and considerate. Such a lovely human being. I know she is a great actress to boot since she can transform herself into Patsy from AbFab. Amazing!
Lumley puts quite a few human female circumstances into words! Wish I had seen this at the time... Goodness bless her, and thanks for sharing chatham43
What can you say that hasn't been said before a million times. A completely unique human being. Around this time, maybe early eighties, she went through a really bad patch. No work, bringing up her son alone. I read recently she had a mental breakdown, but I have seen no details of it. It was about this time that you saw her regularly on Call My Bluff - just to get eating money, I suppose. I'm just so glad for her that things turned out so well.
This is fantastic! I'm a big fan of Sapphire and Steel, and the director once said in an interview that he was mortified when Joanna turned up to rehersals one day with all her hair chopped off (they ended up putting her in a wig). It looks like this interview took place around the time of the hair-cut crisis!
Old fashioned British officer bloodline, calm under fire, intelligent, with a dash of humour to instil confidence, for years they led with great skill, their success was not coincidental it took time to build. I hope we never loose these qualities they still exist. Joanna has them in spades.
Regardless of what she says, she would get plenty of second glances in a bakery or anywhere. She was “absolutely fabulous” then and she still is now in 2021.
Could you please make the BBC Motion Gallery logo larger? I can still see part of her face sometimes, and it seems your objective is to hide the subject of your video.
Thanks for that. I was just wondering because Dec 79 she would have been probably rehearsing for story 3 of S&S. But in that story she's clearly wearing a wig
Your incisive and imperishable comment has put me in a state. I'm now dreaming, on the edge and yes, sad to know it will never happen. But what a thought.
She has a wonderful mind. So competent, rational, logical, inquisitive, warm, smart, wise. Even back then. She’s truly a remarkable human being.
I can see why PJ Hammond chose her to play Sapphire in the Sci-Fi show "Sapphire&Steel".
Her face is just so beautiful, even now at 70 she's still absolutely gorgeous. And intelligent and funny to boot.
This gorgeous woman is a model for all women, demure, well spoken and with a wicked sense of humour. An icon of Britain
Who's "all"😏
i agree

Joanna is such a sweetie. And now, apparently, a National Treasure.
Robert Price but not a Dame, which is SO wrong, Joanna should be up there as Queen of the Dames
I love how she's giving a serious interview about serious topics but she still manages to involve a certain degree of humor. Really makes for an entertaining interview.
She's so elegantly witty, as well as luscious!!!
joanna is a classy lady and my role model she should have her own chat show on tv her voice is soothing
She did fill in for terry wogan for an episode and was very good in testing circumstances ua-cam.com/video/v1iVdLSoIRY/v-deo.html
She done an interview with Ali Frazier and foreman
@@corinneaultt3556 done!!
You mean did !!!!!
She did .. and was completely out of her depth !

She's so beautiful, intelligent and gracious.
Course she's beautiful....she's still gorgeous 35 years later!

Such a thoughtful, well-spoken lady. Very intelligent, gentle and self-deprecating. Just charming.
I love her. Comedic genius. Lovely and most importantly very intelligent and down to earth.
I love Joanna Lumley and her free spirit. So inspirational!
Joanna looks amazing with Dark hair and this hairstyle suits her face shape.
I do, & always will, love this woman to bits. Not just for the way she did/does look, but because she's just an absolutely wonderful person; classless & unpretentious despite her 'Cheltenham Girls School' accent.
She is very intelligent, no way you can deny it
This lovely lady is a national treasure ❤️ after all these years of entertaining us and her charity work, why isn't she Dame Joanna ?
If you've never seen her in Sapphire and Steel, you're missing out. Her acting in that show was amazing at times, she has real dramatic talent.
I saw that show years ago. It is very atmospheric. I remember the set of episodes about the ghosts in the train station. And yes, Joanna is ... well ... absolutely fabulous in it and she's a very purdey woman. 😀
Joanna Lovely is one of my favourite people. I have so much respect and admiration for her for what she did for the Gurkhas.
Just being herself does so much for all of us.
I just love Joanna to bits. Really good actress, pretty lady. She's about as presentable and ladylike as any lady that walked Earth (in my opinion, even royals!) ever could attempt to be. And with such amazingly polished diction to show for it.
meet her once , for the record she doesn't walk , she floats. Ive never seen a woman move like it .
It's weird but I've been watching Parkinson for 50 years, and yet the more I see of his interviews of women the more condescending I find him. Joanna was superb and so intelligent and articulate.
He certainly was of his generation. He certainly looks condescending looking at him now.
I think it’s indicative of a different time. I always liked his later career interviews as a female viewer. The show with Dame Edna, Sharon Osborne and Judi Dench is a favorite 😂

Hahaha yes they definitely try to one up her and find they are no match and she does it so charmingly.
This wonderful woman deserves to be on our banknotes.
Don't you have to be dead? I don't want her to be dead!
just pure class always has been, she still is.
So intelligent and well spoken!
much like Patsy
She should do more voiceovers on tv just love her voice and she is a classy lady !
fell in love with this woman when I saw her in The New Avengers as Purdy.
mickeyh1961 me too. I was 6 though.
Got there before you 😂
Oooh I love the seriousness of this topic in the 70s, compared to now where barely anyone's marrying. I love youtube time capsules
LOL I can't get over Parky's and Joanna's 70s hairdos, how fab are they! And the bum lifts thing, great stuff. Thanks for posting.
An absolutely beautifull lady. Just looking at her, those eyes, those lips, you know this woman gives great mind too.
The "everything" woman. Just perfect.
Thank u bbc!! For bringing lumley to us 🤗😊
So elegant. So charming and beautiful. So intelligent and witty. So kind and considerate. Such a lovely human being.
I know she is a great actress to boot since she can transform herself into Patsy from AbFab. Amazing!
thank you for this video. i love Joanna. she is my crush
She still looks good 40 years later.
Close to perfect: very very beautiful, funny, kind, not taking herself seriously for a bit, altruistic ... Still stunning today. Love that woman
I love Joanna. She is very upper class - she says proply for properly. She is also very modest and humble.
Lumley puts quite a few human female circumstances into words!
Wish I had seen this at the time...
Goodness bless her,
and thanks for sharing chatham43
What a witty and intelligent person she is.
Beauty & brains the ultimate combination.
Diana and Joanna were two of my favourites - An uplifting interview!! 🙂

She's devastating beautiful. Part of her irresistible charm is she doesn't make a big thing about her physical beauty.
Lovely and down to earth. What a great outlook to have as should so many people we see on tv
She did the best travel shows on tv ever.best bar none!
Love the way she put paid to parky!

A lovely good natured and charming person, despite Parkinsons's misogyny and rudeness.
Yeh.she put paid to parky!
Such a beautiful, classy, down-to-earth lady! 🌹
Truly beautiful woman and she's such a pleasure to watch. A brilliant actress too. A national treasure!
Still watching this in Feb 2021 🙋🏽♀️
Joanna has spirit, looks, humour and intelligence.
What a wonderful combination.
Old fashioned British officer bloodline, calm under fire, intelligent, with a dash of humour to instil confidence, for years they led with great skill, their success was not coincidental it took time to build. I hope we never loose these qualities they still exist. Joanna has them in spades.
A class act.
Her answers show her to be very forward thinking. Fantastic human being :)
Regardless of what she says, she would get plenty of second glances in a bakery or anywhere. She was “absolutely fabulous” then and she still is now in 2021.
Beautiful voice and looks x
She is AMAZING!!!
Absolutely Fabulous!!
She is just FABULOUS
She is just brilliant and beautiful!
Haha, oh I love her - great interview, thanks!
I'm glad she changed her hairdo though...
She is one of our national treasures of entertainment
I just love Joanna Lumley...
She is lovely, and hasn't gone the way of so many with terrible plastic surgery, such a warm person with diginity
Could you please make the BBC Motion Gallery logo larger? I can still see part of her face sometimes, and it seems your objective is to hide the subject of your video.
As long as the loonies love them, that's all that matters. Joanna's so great.
How irritating it is to have "BBC MOTION GALLERY" plastered over the middle of the video.
Isn’t she just absolutely gorgeous now in 2021 ❤️
Amazing woman. Still going strong. 👍💪🏼
Thanks for that. I was just wondering because Dec 79 she would have been probably rehearsing for story 3 of S&S. But in that story she's clearly wearing a wig
Beautiful clever and witty then and now
Oh i love her! Soo so smart!!
She was and remains lovely in appearance and personality.
She's just awesome.
Purdey , Steed , and Gambit ! The New Avengers circa 1976 Great show !
Charming and quite intelligent as well.
She's so pretty, even now today, such a wonderful lovely woman!!
Why does Joanna Lumley not have a capitol letter in the title?
There’s a beautiful stunning woman from Nepal that works in my local fish n chip shop no make up no Botox just absolute natural beauty
How delightful at 2:00 when she lowers her eyes and visibly squirms at the concept of her being thought of as a beautiful woman.
Imagine that voice whispering into your ear in the dark.
Your incisive and imperishable comment has put me in a state. I'm now dreaming, on the edge and yes, sad to know it will never happen. But what a thought.
She’s a free spirit. Probably very open minded too!
Absolutely adore her.
Gorgeous and funny as hell. What an amazing combination.
Stunningly beautiful. Then and now.
she sounds like Princess Diana here!
They sound nothing alike.
Truly beautiful, inside and out.
Stunning.
Funnily enough, she's more gorgeous today!!!
Gorgeous!!!
I absolutely adore her.
She is so very very intelligent.
She kind of reminds me of Princess Diana here... Something about her mannerisms and style
Also Keira Knightly as well?!
Other way round, and far more intelligent.
I don't really have idols but Joanna is the closest x
Just lovely....
she is just beautiful, in all ways.
She is even more beautiful now
