I wouldn't worry too much. Italians don't get easily offende when foreign people do mistake speaking they'r language. They greatly appreciate the effort since not many people bother learning Italian.
I find the videos really useful and it is a nice way to learn Italian. Book work can be so boring, especially if you are learning on your own so this way, the language comes alive. In a way, it is strange to be learning Italian from somebody who is in fact, English! However, on the other hand, as you have learnt Italian yourself from a beginner, you know the pitfalls and the need to learn grammar. Other languages in the series are also excellent and interesting but as they are all native speakers and they just concentrate on street conversation, assuming that you already hold a good command of grammar.

Ciao, ad esempio per i luoghi e le stanze della casa è più corretto usare "in": "io sono in cucina", "il gatto è in salotto" (puoi dire anche "io sono nella cucina", ma è più strano)... "Nel/nella/etc.." li usi quando parli di qualcosa che è contenuto dentro a un oggetto specifico, ad esempio "il libro è nello zaino", "il cane è nella sua cuccia"

Quando ho imparato l' italiano molti secoli fa, il mio libro di testo ha anche introdotto una combinazione con le prepozioni 'con' e 'per'. Così c' erano le combinazioni tipo 'pello' e 'colle' ecc. Ma credo che questo sia un uso di altri tempi, vero?
All 3 are correct but have a slight difference in meaning: "al bagno" is a very generic way to say you're in the bathroom doing your business so it's the most common I would say. "In bagno" is almost the sane with the minimal difference that it sound more specific in the sense that you want to stress that you're there in this exact moment. "Nel bagno" is very specific and means that you are exactly in that room now, even if you aren't doing bathroom-related stuff...
Somehow I figured this all out without ever learning the rules. Duolingo teaches you what but not why, so you're kind of left to figure it out on your own. Buy hearing the rules really helps one remember the appropriate words to use.
