  • Motorcycles get punctured a lot, odds are it will happen to a brand new tire too!
    Over a year ago I fitted a rope plug repair in the rear tire of my Yamaha XJ6 and left it to see how long they last. Many people have told me they are good for the life of the tire, here is what I have learned!
    Also, I have some pretty bad luck, it seems irony is well inflated!

    I've had a rope plug right in the centre of my tyre for over a year now. I've had so much confidence in that plug. I ride like an idiot. I've been up to 150mph on it multiple times and it's felt absolutely and utterly stable. Had no air loss at all since having the plug put in.

    I plugged my old 600 and did over 4k miles before replacing the tire, plugs are better than patches in that they plug the hole and not just cover over it,
    Tip, when you got the rope plug in the tire twist the plunger a turn before pulling it out.

    I have done 2 of these repairs on a car which lasted a good 15 000 miles and have just done one on my motorbike a few months ago. I had no air loss on the car repairs but some air loss on the motorbike. I think it was due to inadequate preparation. Anyway I managed to pull out most of the plug material with needle nosed pliers and re reamed the hole. So far so good. Some people on other channels have different techniques which may be worth considering. (1) after reaming the hole put some rubber cement on the reamer and run that through the hole a few times. (2) As others have suggested put cement on the tyre string, all over before putting it in. (3) Some say the string needs to be flush with the tyre surface otherwise the plug gets pushed in? (4) For very small punctures like Hawthorns use a smaller kit, like one for a tubeless bicycle, same thing but the reamer and fitting tool are narrower (why make a bigger hole than you need to?) Also the reaming is easier if you get the reamer in before too much air leaks out, may also ream a more appropriate shaped hole if the tyre is inflated?

    I have a theory that if you fit a mud flap to the front mudguard, that’s if the mudguard comes down low enough, it will defect any thing thrown up by the front tyre as it passes over it. It maybe worth considering.

    There will always be someone who will tell you that a nail will come out on its own; centrifugal force and all that. But, a) given how difficult they can be to remove, as you demonstrated says centrifugal force is nowhere near enough and b) every rotation of the wheel will push on the nail, keeping it in place. All things considered, if you have the plug kit and the right place to make the repair, then do it.

    Well, Hoss, on today's rope plug repair it looks like you did not push it in far enough. Yes, the hole is plugged, but did enough of the rope get inside to form an expanded knob to keep air pressure from eventually blowing the repair out? I don't know, but a lot of the two strands of rope were sticking out after the repair. I have used such repairs for years on the old Toyota pickup and never had a problem, although I push them in further. Happy motoring!

    I got a second puncture in a sipe, just like this one. The previous one and the subsequent rope plugs are both still holding air. Gone are the days when I allowed motorbike shops to compel me to buy a new tyre, which once happened to me twice inside of a fortnight on the same wheel. The second time, they shamefacedly allowed me to get a repair done elsewhere, before refitting the wheel. I wished later that I'd asked for the first new punctured tyre to be returned to me. Likely sold it to a pal for a cheap price with no comebacks, you didn't get it here etc.

    I'm not sure that replacing your tire every time you get a puncture is a good advice TBH You cite safety and it's a fair point, however, when patches or green goo fixes fail - it's typically not all or nothing. You don't suddenly get your tire deflated to half or zero. You will notice it however as you keep riding that you need to stop at the pump more and more often, and at that point - it would be foolish to take your bike on a freeway (I know some people who say riding your bike on a Freeway is foolish period, but who cares about that LOL). However, I really hate to see the landfills we create by getting something new instead of repairing the old item we had. And if you trust the corporations to do it in some environmentally safe way, - don't. Detailed investigations show that very few LLCs bother with doing things by the book. If they did - fracking would be perfectly safe for the environment. Our garbage is more often shipped to poor countries where little children breathe in fumes and get cancer as young adults, extracting scraps worth a few pennies from the crap we throw out.

    I’m not criticising but the reason they say should only be temporary repair is because a long nail or screw like that could & I mean could damage the inside of the tyre where the airtight rubber lining is especially if it’s been run underinflated before you discovered it & this you would only know by inspecting the inside of the tyre, I have seen where a nail has chaffed away at the cords inside. I was a tyre fitter many moons ago. Hope this helps.

      The first layer of rubber inside a tubeless tyre is supposed to be airtight not porous, this is not always a 100% achievable which is why we have to check pressure every now & then.

Fortunately, BMW rescue came and plugged my tyre, but I didn’t leave work until 2130, after it happening (being noticed) at 1830. Just bought a kit and mini pump. CO2 is crap if you get a total flat. You can only get about 10 psi from one cylinder.

    Just back from a trip to Wales. All good until I got back to my accommodation on the last night. A screw had just gone in the tyre and it must have been near the accommodation as it was unmarked.
    I used red tyre strings for the first time. First one lasted 50 miles, second twenty miles so had to resort to the AA who used a mushroom plug kit. That seemed to work on the main hole but he also spotted a tiny hole inside the tread which slowly lost pressure. 50mph back from Wales took a long time.
    Anyhow on cars I have always used vulcanising black tyre strings and they have been fine on the tyre for tens of thousands of miles. The red ones, in my experience, are rubbish. For anyone looking for the answer to the question no one has ever asked, what’s the mpg on a 1250 GSA over 225 miles at 50 mph….70.6 mpg. A tedious journey

    Now naturally, you shouldn't rally do this, but.. I HAVE had 3 punctures I have fixed with 'Tar Strings' (1 in the front, and 2 in the rear), and, following the instructions for the kit, (insert string into the end of the tool, fold equally down the length of the tool, push fully in, rotate handle 2 full turns (this creates a sticky knot inside the tyre, Spicy110 didn't do this strangely), then pull tool out so that it is JUST showing 1/2 cm of string, then cut with razor blade - yeah, instructions may vary) BUT... they equally lasted thousands of miles until I changed tyres for new. NO leaks, no problems, and I did various speeds and lean angles. I DID ride carefully and check every day/every other day for a week or so until I was sure all was fine, and, again, no problems. Small, lightweight kits, and brilliant in operation too. Marvelous invention. However, EACH TO THEIR OWN in the way of personal use, so, be careful out there guys... 😎🇬🇧

    I got recommended these plugs many moons ago. I put a plug in my back tyre on my car and I put 40k+ miles on it (till got to the legal min) and it held pressure fine. 100% recommend them?

    I just got a screw in my front tire.
    Did the rope plug then drove 45mi home. Tore off the tire and put in a push through inside patch.
    I repeat....front tire....
    Back I would hang with the rope plug. Front ....na. I regularly get up to 80+ mph. .. 2000 V 11 Mtoto Guzzi Sport....Michelins.

    The bigger question is “who uses cut nails nowadays?”

  • @albertol1529
    @albertol1529 10 місяців тому

    This is the real downside of filtering. All these w@nky builders throw their junk into the back of flat bed lorries and hence how nails and screws end up on our roads. As the cars wash the debris to the edges and centre, when we filter we pick these up. The other culprit on country lanes are horses losing shoe nails. It always amazes how something lying flat on the road manages to stand up to penetrate the tyre. It’s either the garden rake scenario or it’s really excited to see us.

    • @spicy110
      @spicy110  10 місяців тому

      Haha the way they stand up is the same reason most motorcycle punches are the rear wheel. The front goes over it and gives it a little kick up and the rear collects it.

  • @tam0246
    @tam0246 Рік тому

    good vid been thinking of getting first bike, this is actually a worry of mine what's it like to get a puncture when driving a motorcycle ?

    • @spicy110
      @spicy110  Рік тому +1

      Depends on how quickly it goes down and if it's front or back. If it's slow to go down on the rear, that's the best case and is both noticeable and manageable.
      If the front goes and fast, and even worse, you are turning at the time it can be pretty doggy!
      All depends as I say, but I can say in 15 odd years of riding and a lot of puncher's it's never led be to coming off the bike or even close to.

    a tip i got from bikers that are probably dead now, back in the 80,s I'm a motorway cafe, they said to avoid the centre of the lane and drive where all the other road users,s tyres are, they said the constant traffic sterilizes the tyre track,s of most nails and metal, it builds up in all central roads,

    • @spicy110
      @spicy110  Рік тому +1
