Seeing Beyond Photos: Thy Phu on Life and War in Vietnam

American media shaped the Western view of the Vietnam War. In her new book, Warring Visions, Thy Phu, a professor in the department of arts, culture, and media at University of Toronto Scarborough, offers a glimpse from the other side. She broadens the idea of war photography to include snapshots taken by average Vietnamese people during the war, which she collected for her book by visiting second-hand shops in Ho Chi Minh City. “I wanted this book to challenge readers to finally see Vietnamese people as more than just the monolithic imagery of the war,” she says.
