Treliving did the best he could, with what he had to work with when he traded Tkachuk to Florida. A player who made it clear that he wasn't going to resign. Being able to get an MVP candidate coming off a 115 point season, a top 4 defencman and a 1st round pick....looking at that trade at the time it was made, very few people would have said Calgary got fleeced.. looking back at it now and how all players involved have performed and the success of each of their respective teams, yes it seems like Florida did win that trade..but when your trading a young star player like that, your very rarely gonna win that trade....that's something the Leafs need to be careful of, I hope Brad Treliving has learned from his past mistakes..if he screws up on a Marner trade, it could set this team back years.. therefore I think they're going to be pretty cautious here..like they have said, you don't make a trade just for the sake of making a trade and that statement is very true, that's something the fans need to realize, yes they should explore a Marner trade, but it's stupid to make a move out of desperation and emotion. If it doesn't make sense or make the team better, don't do it.

I don’t think Marner’s value is as high as these guys think. There’s a cautionary tale named John Tavares on the team that Marner is mimicking.
    In
Tavares’ first 9 years, he made it to the 2nd rd once.
In Marner’s first 8 years, he’s made it to the 2nd rd once.
They both underperform in the playoffs compared to regular season production numbers.
Neither are “superstars”, so paying them as such is bad business.

If CapFriendly is remotely close, looking at the "value" of Marner's first two years, it seams that Maple Leafs/Marner's agent knew that it was essentially a no-move contract anyways because of the prepaid portion of Marner's salary. Why or better yet, How would you consider trading a player with that amount of money invested when you can't get it out of player(s) of opposing team?

My sister is cottage neighbours with Woodcroft. I'm curious to know, if Edmonton were to win, would he be eligible for a ring? I know some leagues, teams give players a ring if they were on the roster at some point during the year and traded before the playoffs. Interested to know if this would apply for a former coach? Or being a team decision?

Whatever happens I hope the Leafs don’t get fleeced! In my lifetime I have seen super star Mahovlich, heart and soul player like Sittler, good players Unger, Stemkowski, Kehoe, Carlyle, Vaive, Thomas, and most recently Kadri for good or subpar players. The only one that clearly worked out even though most Leafs fans hated it at the time was Clark for Sundin!!! If the Leafs are able to get a young defenseman who is ready to make the next step I’m all in all it but given the history it makes me nervous!!!

Due to Carolina would have no interest in paying Marner $11m plus, Aho has been PPG for 2 of past 3 season and their highest paid player making $9.75m playing 1st line C. Plus they have $26m in cap space and have Jarvis, Necas, Guentzel, Teravainen, Pesce and Skjei to resign, mainly their entire 2nd line in forwards and defence.

Finally becoming a playoff performer? Marner has more playoff points in his 8 years with the Leafs than any other Leaf, yet he is perceived by the mostly know-nothing Leaf fans, as a poor playoff performer. What does that make all the other Leafs? Pathetic that Marner is the fall guy for a poorly coached and managed Leaf team. Only the Leafs would trade a future Hall of Famer in his prime. Stupid, thy name is Leafs!

Players at the Blake Wheeler and Mitch level - even in their primes - are not super star material. At least Wheeler - could play well at centre, fight, and didn’t playoff disappoint the way Mitch consistently does. 😀
When it comes down to playoff disappointments in game 7 OT - Mitch never fails to disappoint in say his back checking assignment on Pasta, as Mitch just decided to give up on his back checking assignment at the blue line - and then just watch his man Pasta score.

Marner is already set for life with career earnings over 50 million. He might only want to go 3 or 4 years with the cap finally starting to go up. That would take him to about 100 million, plus a chance to sign another long 6 to 8 deal to finish his career at 38 or 39.
Signing for 7 or 8 right now lands him in that gray area of 35 years old when it ends, an age where contracts are tough to get for aging stars and also tough to bury if he fizzles out.

The 2024/25 season will be a repeat of this season with some different names at the low end of the salary scale. You people need to be realistic. Marner and Traverse are not going anywhere. They will not waive their no movement clause. Worst case scenario is you let them walk on July1st 2025. You free up over 20 million in cap space. Go out and get a number 1 goalie and defenseman and better supporting cast. Knies and Minton will have another year of experience and Cowan will make the team. Repeat after me - Leafs have no cap space to make the team better for the 2024/25 season. Even if they make the playoffs and get into the second round big deal. They are not making it to the final round. Facts do not lie. Let the talking heads talk as they have to play it up and make a living.

Looks like Marner wants to test the UFA market a year from now, see it how unfolds. He's not interested in how this will have huge negative impacts on several levels on the Leafs for next season.. Same as when he held out in 2019. Very selfish and self centered guy, greed just oozes from his pores. Even boos from the fans won't faze him, all he sees are $ signs a year from now.
