I was in Genoa the day this happened. We couldn't figure out why the train had stopped and there was such a long delay in starting up again, as we were leaving for Nice. When our family called us from the U.S. and told us the news we were shocked. It was close enough to our hotel to be able to view it if we had stayed one more day. I felt so sad for those who lost their lives.

Most people watch the local news, not the international news. When the local news starts reporting breaking international news, they usually covers it for a few days and they stop. Peaple who are busy and/or watch the news occasionally could easily missed it.

Find a doc on the BASF factory explosion. There was a young guy on his first day at work on his first job. He was so proud, that he had saved up for new shoes to wear. The explosion happened less than ½ hour into the work day. His dad had to identify his body by those new shoes.
Like u say, they are all tragic. Theres just something about such stories.

@@dfuher968I can understand as well on a much smaller, but personal scale. A mutual friend of me and my sister stopped by to show us this great hairstyle she'd just gotten. She left the salon and came straight to our house, all bouncy and smiling, to show it off and she looked so pretty! About 4 hours later, she had a brain aneurysm and was gone. I didn't believe it. At all. We were just teenagers! We're all supposed to live forever, right? We've got prom and then college. What kid is having an aneurysm? No way! This was our childish thought pattern as we simply couldn't reconcile reality with our one track teenaged dreams. Then came the funeral. When we looked into her casket and saw her hair, we lost it. For whatever reason, seeing her hair was just overwhelming. The hairstyle she was so proud of that she came straight to our house to show off, was now the same hairstyle she wore in her casket. They didn't even have to do her hair. It was like she had it styled for her funeral herself. I actually wailed. Our mom had to come pull us away. Even now when I think of it, I can still feel those same emotions. My sister won't even discuss it. It's all still so crazy to me. Smh Sorry I know it's not the same thing at all. It's just that this story broke my heart and brought back a very sad memory. 💔

And ofc we had the recent bridge collapses in Pennsylvania: the I-95 bridge in Philadelphia and the Forbes Ave Bridge in Pittsburgh.

It reminds me of NYC's Citicorp Bldg. that averted possible disaster after a Princeton student, writing her school thesis on the bldg., discovered a design flaw that could have resulted in the bldg toppling over in a high gust of wind.
Her findings led to construction crews being brought in to make the building structurally safe which were performed in secret as was the 10-block evacuation plan the City put in place, just in case anything happened before the repairs were complete.

Caesar built his bridge over the Rhine by putting small boats side by side and fastening them there. It wasn't intended to be used on a permanent basis. Its a really really bad comparison on that architect's part and kind of insensitive too. He owed it to both the survivors and the dead to do a good job.

Condolences to everyone involved. And the films of the collapse is terrifying. But it gives investigators a chance to see what happened. Although rain obscured still showed enough for putting together the collapse.

  • @SadisticSenpai61

Okay, the bridge Julius Caesar built is very different from what Genoa needs. And completely blocking the river in the process for... how long? That seems rather silly.
And frankly, after the bridge collapsed, no one was going to trust a bridge quickly put up on its remaining supports. They did the right thing in demolishing what's left and building a new bridge to replace it. I mean, they just highlighted that the public is questioning the structural integrity of other bridges from that era.
Maybe this engineer does know what he's talking about (although his comments about Julius Caesar's bridge leads me to question that - why would you even bring that up), but he clearly doesn't understand public relations and building trust with the public.
