I don't have that problem because my boat has a deep keel and the intake is several feet above the bottom of my keel so sand is not a problem but anything floating in the water can be.
Next weekend, I'll be starting a 4.108 for my first time. Have had the boat for 2 months preparing. Wish me luck. Any tips? (Fresh oil, fresh ful, good battery, new alternator, new starter, strainer working, impeller on site for after compression tests.)
New fuel filters would be wise but you will need to bleed all the air out of the fuel lines. If you do that and the engine won't start you will need to loosen the high pressure fuel line at the first injector then crank the engine with the starter to bleed air out of that line. Fuel and air will come out, the engine should start running then tighten that line back down. Important... Before you try to start the engine remove the valve cover and spray some Marvel Mystery Oil on all the valve stems and lifters, flood the top end with that oil and let it sit for 30 minuets then put the valve cover back on. You may need a new valve cover gasket if the old one get damaged. Next put a socket on the fly wheel and turn the the engine by hand several times then try to start her up. Good Luck
You don’t need to put it in gear, you can certainly run it in neutral to flush it out. You probably do more damage by putting a load on a cold engine than flushing it in idle. Just my opinion!
