    My step-brother and I also watched War of the Worlds - The Series when we were kids, and it freaked him out. I clearly remember stuffing an empty coat sleeve into a pocket, and using my free hand to make a Vulcan-style claw through a front button to make him think I was a host! He told and I was forbidden to watch the show thereafter… I deserved it.

      I just bought it... Have only watched the 2-hr pilot so far and I really liked it. Some but not all of the acting was pretty bad but overall enjoyed the way it was done. I always liked Jared Martin and Paul Chaves a lot on this show.

      @@FridayNightArcade I've seen Season 1 so far, and although there is a high cheese-factor and a lot of incredulous leaps in logic, there is no denying the fun. It's also rather gory and ahead of its time with certain concepts that The X-Files seemed to popularize about five years later. I feel like if War of the Worlds had come out as a TV series about five or six years later, it would have been lifted by the early '90s boom in Ufology that had been sparked by Area 51 and other stuff.

    • @FridayNightArcade
      @FridayNightArcade  Рік тому

      For sure the cheese is a bit high with this one, but I enjoyed that as a kid and wasn't turned off by it on the rewatch. It was like tuning in to see what the heroes were gonna do against the aliens each week no different than the old Ninja Turtles were gonna do against Shredder or something lol. And it definitely paved the way for X-Files with the gore and Ufology elements. Glad to know others enjoyed this show! And that's a good point about the timing. People probably just weren't really ready for a show like this. It was a weird era of first run syndication shows too because studios were trying to capitalize on Star Trek TNG's success with that model.

  • @AegisAuras
    @AegisAuras Рік тому +2

    My family actually saw a decent amount of UFOs when I was a kid. The neighboring town had a bit of a reputation for being a hotspot.
    We witnessed a lot of the classic types like the mini orb clusters that would combine and separate. There was once this single large orb that could adjust its brightness and travel across the entire visible sky in under a second, stop on a dime, leaving a huge streak of light in its travel path, then convert its light configuration into that of a normal human plane and slowly fly around. I think it was trying to express to us that they can disguise themselves as human craft if they desire.
    I think the most impressive though was a giant black triangle with blue lights around the edges and in the center. It was just hovering silently over the woods at a hill top. We saw it as we exited a movie theater one night and we just watched it. It’s such an unusual feeling because we were confronted with something that didn’t fit into our worldview at the time. I looked over at my parents like “what should we do” and they were like “I don’t know”. It was a strange situation.
    This was during the 2012 Age Of Aquarius transition. We didn’t know about the significance of the date at the time but it makes sense now looking back.
    I eventually found a book called The Law Of One and that got me into the whole ET thing. Knowing what I do know, if I could go back, I’d want to tell them something like:
    “Hello. I hope we can be friends, and thank you.”

    Awesome to see you post for Halloween, FNA! I was actually itching for some of your ol' MacVentures reviews earlier this week, so I rewatched your reviews of Shadowgate and Uninvited, etc. lol.
    This was a great topic for the season (I have been listening to MANY a spooky podcast about mysterious disappearances this month, just trying to get into the Halloween mood. If you're a fan of aliens and stuff, but haven't listened to podcasts from the Beyond Creepy, Monsters Among Us and/or Missing Persons Mysteries channels, I highly recommend them... though they both speak pretty slowly so I bump up the speed on their videos to 1.5x) and it's always fun to see an FNA video, _especially_ since your schedule has slowed down since the COMPLETELY REASONABLE event of having your newborn twins to take care of. Every video dropped is precious now, haha. I freakin' _LOVE_ Body Harvest too, so I will be looking forward for whenever you can get around to making a Part 2... probably for next Halloween, I assume. Gonna be fun to hear your thoughts on those old X-Files games too, I'm sure 😃I hear they're actually surprisingly good!
    I can't believe you played the Varginha Incident instead of any of the Area 51 games (Arcade, Xbox/PS2 or Blacksite for the PS360 era consoles). I saw Civvie11 play Alien Anarchy and, yeah, it seems like _total garbage._ Fun to talk about though! Oh, and you're not old - I had 'To the Earth' as a kid and it was one of mine (and my sister's) most hated titles for the NES, lol. It's just unfun.
    About that 'War of the Worlds' show, I for one would love to see you do a TV show video sometime; I imagine it would be like a pleasant American version of Stam Fine's videos (if you've not seen that channel, you totally should check it out). I suggest considering making a new side-series for the channel though; "Friday Night Matinee" or something, so you can talk about old movies and TV. It would be weird to have that kind of content under the Friday Night Arcade banner as far as the titles of your vids go.
    Btw, is the start bar on your home PC _along the top of the monitor_ or am I seeing things? I've legitimately never seen that before. Anyway, congrats on the 8-year anniversary! Thanks for all the great, entertaining content - it's always fun to hear your thoughts on older games in that unique, FNA-patented chill and pleasant manner. Also, even though you didn't say it at the end here, I will continue to not text and drive. I always liked that signoff; just one of those things that is good to remind people of. Some people really need to hear that kind of thing every once in awhile.

    • @FridayNightArcade
      @FridayNightArcade  Рік тому +1

      Hey thanks so much for your message and the kind words! Yeah, there were so many more games I wanted to cover for this episode. Those Area 51 games were on the list although I'd covered one in the Arcade Gun Games episode, but there were others. I wanted to get this episode out in time for Halloween but ran into a few technical snags and it was either rush through those others or just bag 'em for a Part 2.
      I think I chose Alien Anarchy more so I could just tell the story about the Varginha Incident lol. Took it upon myself as a challenge to see how many Ufology nuggets I could cram into a video without making the video entirely about UFOs :D .. I have no idea what's true or not but there have been so many crazy developments in the last few years, we may actually find out. I grew up a UFO kid. I was all about outer space anyway. Must have read Target: Earth a hundred times from the school library. It was this choose your own adventure book about an alien invasion. Unsolved Mysteries, X-Files, War of the Worlds. I was all-in.
      Kinda got out of it for awhile as the rigors of adulthood set in but then after 2017 when the NYT story hit I got back into it a bit. Listening to Cmdr. David Fravor tell the story of the Nimitz Incident in 2004 is compelling. And then yeah, when the pandemic hit as well as being stuck at home taking care of newborns... there were many sleepless nights spent listening to random podcasts while doing 3am feedings ha. Thanks for the suggestions on those btw, will have to check them out. I personally love That UFO Podcast. It's just super chill and the hosts are funny but also have some healthy skepticism baked in and they always seem to have really good guests. Last week they interviewed Jacques Vallée!
      Have seriously considered doing a deep dive into some older TV shows or even just picking a specific episode and talking about it, researching any behind the scenes stuff about it, etc. Thanks for mentioning that. I threw that line in there as a bit of a teaser to gauge interest. I'd like to deep dive into some older movies as well.
      Yeah... I have an odd setup. I've got multiple monitors at my desk - a lot of times when editing I use a standing thing (which is technically visible in the head's up shot because I'm dumb and forgot to move it lol). So I need to be able to see the Start menu while I'm standing at my desk. But I've my main monitor split off to that TV in the background and there's a couch in here facing that monitor in case I want to play a game on the couch... can go between OG hardware and emulators or whatever on the PC if needed. Or sometimes I plop down and edit from the couch lol. So I still need to be able to see the Start menu on the main monitor instead of moving it to one of the other monitors visible at my desk. It's a hodgepodge in here but I think I finally got it the way I want it finally... might do an FNA HQ tour if people are interested.
      Cheers!

      @@FridayNightArcade Hope you had a Happy Halloween! I was working at my normal job at a hospital, so I didn't do anything. Definitely gonna be listening to That UFO Podcast tonight. "Spooky Month" may officially be over as a I type this, but now I'm pretty addicted to these types of podcasts when I'm working on stuff here on my PC. Thanks for mentioning it!
      That setup makes more sense now too - thanks for explaining it. It was a little thing, but it was just something I noticed so I'm glad I know why it is the way it is now. That's actually pretty neat!

    There is a C64 game called Save New York you should review. In that game, flying aliens try to literally eat the New York skyline, and you play an Air Force type character who shoots them down. But what made that game cool was actual collapse physics. If the enemies ate an entire level of a building, the building would collapse up to that point and you would be penalized for not keeping the city safe.
    They then took it to the next level by the flying enemies dropping larvae that hatch, go into the subway, and eat the buildings from below. At that point, you have to go into the subways and shoot the larva.

    Great choices here; I had a legitimate laugh out loud when you pointed out how just one stage in Star Fox 64 was a better Independence Day game than the actual Independence Day game. Might have to try out the other versions of Bart vs. the Space Mutants, too; as much as I liked the puzzle elements of the first stage, it was a pretty big disappointment that you only had SLIGHT amounts of that in the final stage, and just about nothing throughout the rest of the game.
    As for UFO encounters, I actually have had one, but unfortunately, it's a bit light on details, since I was just a baby at the time; everything I know is secondhand from my dad. From what I remember, he described something shaped almost like a 4-point star, but with more rounded edges, and all kinds of colored lights cycling around the underside over our field. It hovered there for a while, and then was just gone in an instant, making absolutely no sound when it left. He said he has all the details written down somewhere, but where that might be is anyone's guess; I'd love to read it for myself.

    Alien Storm is also great on the Master System. Anyway, there is also an alien invasion in the SNES game I have played this weekend, X-Kaliber 2097. The plot is that Neo New York is ruled by an evil man who actually takes orders from alien invaders (there is a plot twist after you defeat the bad guy). Great action game with a stellar soundtrack, by the way.

    One day some good years ago, I was just laying down on the porch in my house (I'm From Brazil so porchs here are kinda different, they're more closed spaces, not as much in the open as in USA). My eyes were closed but I feel the light of something penetrating my eyelids. When I opened my eyes I saw an grey spherical shiny thing, like made of an very polished metal. It was a few meters From me, like observing me. I got startled from it and jumped on my feet, as I did so it just flew away at a very, very fast speed. I saw it getting Very high in the air and Just flying very fast to the sky above. It was the size of an football ball, and kinda shaped like one too. I remember this to this day and still gives me goosebumps.

      Nice. It didn't end on a cliffhanger so much as it had a really bizarre shift in tone from S1 to S2 and not necessarily for the better. But the producers were informed it wouldn't be picked up for S3 so they did get to write and film a proper kind of an ending to the thing that most were satisfied with. First season was still my favorite though.

      My wording wasn't the best, but basically what I was feebly trying to articulate is that the government's previous responses to public reports of UFOs had always been an emphatic and dismissive, "they're not real; stop asking."
      Now their official response is, "um... yeah.. .they're real and we don't know what the hell they are either, but we're pretty sure they're not Russia or China."
      That's kinda significant, eh?

    I am a big UFO buff but also a big historian buff... And this is what I learned through my life and experience. People loves to use stories to convey messages... It's all around us. Take all the classic Princess Disney movies, if you take time to read and analyze the original stories, you will discover that all the tales are life and sex education... The same with horror stories. There is a reason we all forgot. Nature when it was still wild was a very scary place and dangerous place. There was a lot of animals and light was still not invented. The last thing you wanted is your kids to wander at night and be attacked by animals or miss a danger... I can even say the same about the Bible. It is just a story, even if in that particular case, it was created for a lot of reasons... The same goes with UFO. I have absolutely no doubts life exists in the Universe. We, humans, are not special at all. But when you take your car and drive from Kansas City to Los Angeles, you don't crash along the way... And travelling through space is much more complex than travelling on a planet, under gravity. Just pooping is a real challenge. It doesn't add up that Aliens travel accross the Universe to just crash on our planet... That said, at the opposite, you are in a middle of a cold war, what better threat can you get that telling your opponent: "I have an UFO that crashed on my land and I recovered their technology, be careful". (Added advantage: you have now all the spying ressource focus on BS and not on what you really doing, BIG win). Or, you are the director of a magazine or a TV show, you need to make money, what easier way to hook people on mystery and UFO in particular?

    • @FridayNightArcade
      @FridayNightArcade  Рік тому +1

      No I hear you. I was in that same place about UFOs for a long time. I'm still kinda there but more open minded. I've always thought the Universe was far too big for it to be just us, that much is certain.
      But also the Universe is so big and so unfathomably old... that's a big part of it is the timing. Humans have really only been walking the earth maybe a few hundred thousand years? The time it takes a civilization to rise up, discover technologies making it capable of interstellar travel and then be able to find us in the middle of all of the nothingness. There could have been entire other civilizations that came and went before our planet even finished cooling. So for a long time I'd soured on the idea of visitation. That and the lack of any real concrete evidence. Roswell is such a cold case at this point - you're going off the testimony of a bunch of dead people. And the kid in me that was infatuated with X-Files and Unsolved Mysteries took a backseat to bills and the everyday grind.
      The 2004 Nimitz Incident is the case that hooked me back in. I have no idea what Cmdr. David Fravor saw on November 14, 2004. I'll say I'm not beholden to any one hypothesis and there could well be completely mundane explanations for every UFO sighting. Played up the aliens angle for a bit of tongue and cheek with this episode, but I wouldn't be shocked if it all just turns out to be secret tech or something. I'd just really like to know one way or the other. That case is probably the gold standard for all UFO cases. It's displaying bizarre flight characteristics and doing stuff none of our known 2004 level tech could do. Multiple credible witnesses in the air and onboard two separate aircraft carriers monitoring with radar equipment. Even a little video clip. It's a fascinating story.
      Could this all be a psyop by the government? I certainly don't rule that out. But if that's the case there's a whole other set of economical and sociological issues that need to be addressed. Like the fact that our tax dollars are potentially funding research into highly advanced and possibly clean sustainable propulsion and yet, our society is still allowed to rely on fossil fuels despite the ecological impacts. There's such a push/pull between Big Oil and clean energy. So with all of that in mind... I just wanna know what it is one way or the other and hopefully we can find out in our lifetimes.

    • @migueldias8546
      @migueldias8546 Рік тому

      @@FridayNightArcade I posted a comment on UA-cam so it is lacking all the nuances. Sometimes you do crash when you are driving. But just on your point of timing and civilization, there is so much to say. When we see the challenge we are facing right now, can a civilization access to advance point that easily? It's clearly a major challenge.
      I have seen an UFO once, while I was flying on a commercial plane, at the dawn of the day. But I rapidily came to the conculsion that despite what my eyes were seeing (a traditional metallic saucer/cigar) it was probably just an optical illusion: it was strangely keeping the same pace and the same distance to the airplane, and the shape would change if I moved my head. That's also an important point, our eyes are bad but our brain is even worst... I always say there is no bigger liar than our own brain! We all know, think about childhood, you remember great memories or traumatic ones... You can't recall your boring everyday activities....
      Roswell is for me the typical cold war explanation... Add to it radio and radio shows were super popular at the time, it was easy to believe... But I don't dismiss any of your remarks. I have zero certitude, just a lot of questions. What I share are my conclusions (as of today), not facts. I do agree that the governement would not share the info of a third type encounter and I totally get why. I would do the same thing!

    I don't agree with you on Bart vs the Space Mutants. The controls are worse.
    You still have to press two buttons at the same time to perform a long jump and it doesn't work as well as in the NES version (or even the Master System version).
    They should have used the C-button for the long jump but they didn't.
    I can beat the NES game, I can beat the Master System game. The Genesis version I can't and I blame the controls.
    Apart from the graphics the NES version wins in every department.

    • @FridayNightArcade
      @FridayNightArcade  Рік тому

      I felt like the extra button helped because you could use it for your selected item. And it defaulted back to your sunglasses after a few seconds which was helpful.
      Yeah, you still had the jump/run button issue but I felt like the controls were overall smoother to where it didn't matter as much. But also it could be one of those things where if you've played it on the NES, the Genesis controls will screw up muscle memory. But I get what you're saying. At the end of the day, just pick the one you want :)
      I have that issue going from NES Ninja Gaiden to SNES Ninja Gaiden Trilogy. The SNES controls just feel absolutely wrong for me and I can't articulate why lol.
