When I asked my friend Alex Olmedo who was the best tennis player he ever faced he imediately answered, Lew Hoad. And Alex had played Rosewall, Gonzales, Segura, Laver.........and he told me Lew Hoad had all the skills plus being a very athletic, strong man and could handle his beloved beer very well!

At 14 - 15 years I got interested in Lew and his fenonmal skills on the tenniscourt and he inspired me to play in Denmark and have played to the very day here.

He won the Grand Slam in 1956 --- all 4 major titles.
No man has done it since, except Rod Laver (who did it twice!).

I hate to point this out, but Hoad lost in the US Open finals that year, which is not to diminish from his greatness. Amazingly, he won three doubles slams the same year. I had a tennis coach years ago who played on the tour and said Hoad was the best, describing Hoad's groundstrokes as the heaviest on the tour. One could argue that the current style of play evolved from that.

@@afritimm Thanks for that. I really do not want to downplay Hoad's greatness. Many of his contemporaries spoke of him as the potential GOAT.

I've just been watching documentaries on Djokovic, who of course has the best statistics. But I've always been partial for Rod Laver, two calendar grand slams while not competing in them for 5 years at his peak. Just like I favor Ben Hogan for GOAT golfer, even though Nicklaus and Tiger have more majors. Hogan was out for WW2 plus a horrific accident, but the way he dominated at his peak and the superhuman precision of his play were incomparable. Bobby Jones retired at 28 and still had a staggering record of dominance.
Hoad's career likewise was relatively brief due to health issues, but the elegance and power at his peak were something to behold.
