The Planet was the predecessor of every steam locomotive ever built. Front cylinders. Tubular boiler with blast pipe. The Rocket was an experiment while the Planet was the real success.
Maybe this guy has done it once or twice before? But, agreed! When a friend of mine got a day loco-driving as a birthday present the instruction was to open very gently, wait and see what happens and almost miraculously, the engine begins to move without further adjustment.
@@jozefbubez6116 that’s neat. This older engine is at a much lower operating pressure so just popping the throttle wide open there’s little to no risk of wheelslip
I'd like to see how the "flying reverse" works, with the footpedal operation of the dog-clutch (obviating the need to juggle the valvegear on starting).
I'm curious to know what those two moving levers to the left are called I've seen them before on locomotives like the John Bull and the Bestfriend of Charleston I know they connect to the rods in some way but what are they used for?
ua-cam.com/video/swWh45knSms/v-deo.html ; Greetings this steam train and others are in a very interesting railway museum visit and how you can take a ride on a steam train
yes, it used to extend to the colliery sidings until 1993, but the connection was removed so the tramway could be placed in its place, steam originally finished in 1994 at beamish and revived in 2006
@@pollygardiner5669 No, they're there for when one of the pistons ends in top dead center, so you can manually give the cylinders a push in the right direction.
If my memory is correct, watch the film 'The Titfield Thunderbolt', and in certain scenes you'll see the driver working the valve levers in that way; the 'Lion has similar gear.
The Planet, is awesome 👍🏼. First, when it starts up, it makes a loud puffing noise. Until 1:11, when the driver turns the main handle, it go quite, and only the pure clickity sounds and wheels turning are heard, isn't Planet just as amazingly quiet as Stephenson's Rocket. Maybe it and The Rocket can do jobs carrying animals because they Compared to most bigger diesel and steam locomotive are less likely to disturb animals.
That’s because that’s the regulator which controls the steam into the cylinders. He’s slowing the engine down as engines built in the 1830s don’t have brakes. The train is moving only by inertia.

Theyre their to ensure to manually move the valve gear into the correct position. The driver is not stupid enough to put his hand on them when the loco is moving, and is well trained.

I think one of the class came to Germany and was named "Adler".
I agree and respect your opinion.
However, without Stephenson's Rocket, Planet and the other locomotives girls and boys would never arrived into our world.
@@thomastsangthomas1616 as with Locomotion before that. It’s an evolution.
@@simonf8902 yes you are right just like I say
I love how he just rips the throttle all the way open right at the beginning

chugging along with the handles flying, it runs smoothly.
This is my dream right here I love steam engines and I wish to work on one one day
Thanks, almost as good as being there!

These are the gear levers attached to the slide valves above the pistons. By adjusting the gears you can adjust the steam entering the pistons.
A proper steam loco
Or a standard locomotive, right?
Is that the end of the line as 2:10 ?

What planet were they on.
good vid.Thanks.
What's the deal with the rods moving on their own?
They are connected to the piston valves. It you really wanted to you could drive planet just using those, but your arms would hurt after a while.
@@Lozzy100 I see, so its basically simple driving mode.

Very good video !!!
Would love to drive one of this type.😎
Nice chap driving the loco.
the actual thing?
@Ashton assumable
@nukedukem6 it is actually its amazing that it's still in working conditions
Is it in Newcastle ??
This was a special event at Beamish Museum, near Newcastle in 2013. She is store at the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester.
QUEEEE CHULADA DE MAQUINA GENIAL👍👍👍💓💞💘💗👌👌👏👋
When i was child and first time saw it .. i love,, Steam engines are the ancestors of trains
It is easy to see why coal mine owners bought into steam traction.

Super 😀😀
Those handles are for manual driving in case it runs out of fuel or something.
No those are for controlling the valve gear. It also allows you to start the thing if the valves are in a dead center.
No Windscreen, but it does have wrought iron porch railings, lol!
Wow!!
Oh Sam !
Carriage be damned....we ride here!
Coool!!!
Ein sehr schönes Videodokument 🙂 #sebbtroe
Bit vicious with the old regulator
When you've got a loco as small as Planet, you have to give her quite a lot of welly so she will move.
"Chuff Chuff Chuff Chuff!"

LOCOMOTIVA LUI STEMPHENSON ? O D din Comănești - ROMANIA .
1992 Planet Replica
You should make movie by 3 cams. Not only one cam and not only one position.
Amazing, that old and still running
Its a reproduction from 1992
運転台左側で往復運動し続けているレバー2本が危なっかしい

It's driven by an electric motor in the tender
You'll be thinking about the air pressure breaks. The locomotive itself is coal fired.
Then it would be Hornby or Bachmann 1:1 scale model train!
looks dangerous with moving sticks .
